Tornadoes that leveled parts of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi on Wednesday will linger over the South on Thursday and begin heading toward the Carolinas, Georgia and a sliver of Virginia, officials warned.
Thunderstorms, tornadoes and hail were expected to lash east-central Georgia, northeastern South Carolina, southern North Carolina and extreme southeast Virginia, according to the National Weather Service.
“All severe hazards are possible” the Weather Service said. Twenty-six million people were at risk.
Severe thunderstorms were also possible in the eastern Gulf Coast into the southern and central Appalachians.

The U.S. and China are setting vastly different expectations for their first high-level meeting under the Biden administration, casting a chill on the talks set to begin in Alaska on Thursday.
American officials set to attend the summit — including National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken — have characterized the meeting as a one-off event where the U.S. will confront the Chinese on a range of security and human rights issues that Beijing will need to address before it can improve relations with Washington.
Chinese officials, by contrast, have spun the meeting as an opportunity for Washington and Beijing to reset their relationship and, as the world’s leading powers, hash out the new international order. China’s Yang Jiechi, a member of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo and the country’s top diplomat, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will be meeting with Blinken and Sullivan in Anchorage over two days.
Competing statements from both sides last week emphasized the rift: “This is not a strategic dialogue,” Blinken said of the meeting in testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Committee. A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, quickly contradicted him: “China, invited by the United States, will have a high-level strategic dialogue with the U.S. side in the coming days.”

(CNN)Severe weather, historic snowfall and flash flooding are forecast for the next few days in areas of the central United States, from the Rockies to the Mississippi River Valley.
This storm system begins with its first threat over the Rockies, as intense bands of snowfall will dump feet of powder across Colorado and Wyoming.Dangerous travel conditions will exist across portions of interstates 25, 70, and 80 — so drivers are urged to use extreme caution.“Very difficult to impossible travel conditions expected across all of southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle,” the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Cheyenne, Wyoming, said Thursday. “Expect extended periods of whiteout conditions, low visibilities, and possible power outages.”But that’s just one side of the system. The south and eastern sides of the system — which will be pulling in warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico — will be fueling several days of severe storms, with the possibility of tornadoes.
Nearly 20 million people will be under the threat for severe storms at some point Friday through Sunday across half a dozen states with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.
In addition to all that, the cold front will eventually stall across the Southern Plains, resulting in heavy rain over much of the same region throughout the next couple of days which will lead to flooding.

The U.S. Department of Education will have a new leader. Late Monday, in a 64 to 33 vote, the U.S. Senate confirmed Miguel Cardona to be the next Secretary of Education.
Before being nominated by President Biden, Cardona served as Connecticut’s education commissioner for the past year and a half, arguing forcefully that schools should reopen during the COVID-19 crisis in order to keep equity gaps from growing ever wider. Before that, he spent his entire career working for the public school system that helped raise him — as a fourth grade teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the old factory town of Meriden, Conn.
Cardona assumes the Education Department’s top job as the debate around how to safely reopen schools has grown increasingly bitter, with many parents clamoring for children to be able to return to classrooms and with many teachers resisting a return before all educators have been vaccinated. That has forced Biden to walk a political tightrope, reassuring teachers they should be prioritized for the vaccine while new guidance from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention makes clear that vaccinations should not be a prerequisite for reopening schools.

The Biden administration’s task force to reunite families separated at the border under former President Donald Trump will allow those families to reunite and settle in the United States, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Monday.
“We are hoping to reunite the families either here or in the country of origin,” Mayorkas said at the White House press briefing. “We hope to be in a position to give them the election and, if in fact, they seek to reunite here in the U.S., we will explore lawful pathways for them to remain in the United States — and to address the family needs, so we are acting as restoratively as possible.”

The pilot on flight 2292 radioed around 1:00 p.m. CST and said that the unidentified object was flying right on top of them, according to a transmission recorded by Steve Douglass on his blog, Deep Black Horizon. American Airlines verified to Fox News that the transmission is from flight 2292.
“Do you have any targets up here? We just had something go right over the top of us,” the pilot said in the radio transmission.
“I hate to say this but it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile type of thing moving really fast. It went right over the top of us.”

American Airlines confirmed that the radio transmission is authentic, but did not give any further comment on the possible alien encounter. “Following a debrief with our Flight Crew and additional information received, we can confirm this radio transmission was from American Airlines Flight 2292 on Feb. 21,” an American Airlines spokesperson told Fox News in a statement. “For any additional questions on this, we encourage you to reach out to the FBI.”
The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. Flight 2292 was around 37,000 feet at the time of the sighting, and Albuquerque Center did not respond because local air traffic interfered, according to Douglass. The flight went on to land in Phoenix, Arizona.

Days of snow and ice brought down power lines and damaged utility equipment across northwest Oregon, causing extensive power outages that have lasted for over a week in some areas.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in Metairie at the Jefferson Gun Outlet.
According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, three people are dead and two people were taken to area hospitals and are considered to be stable.
AdvertisementAt around 2:50 pm, Lopinto said deputies responded to the shooting at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in the 6700 block of Airline Drive.
Deputies found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Lopinto.
JPSO sources say that a man entered the gun outlet with a loaded gun unholstered.
Sources say that the man got into an argument with a clerk who told him he should not have a loaded gun until he got inside the range.
According to JPSO sources, shots were fired during the argument when at least two customers on the range engaged the man.
The man was shot, but also fired back at the two customers who were also injured, according to JPSO sources.
At this time, Lopinto said it appears a suspect shot two victims inside the location, then was engaged by the two customers and shot outside the location by multiple other individuals.
The suspect is one of the deceased on scene, according to Lopinto.
There is no additional information available at this time.

The Pentagon, according to information gleaned through materials secured through a Freedom of Information Act request to the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, has admitted to testing wreckage from UFO crashes, and a researcher who obtained the materials is theorizing the debris may be from the Roswell, New Mexico crash in 1947.“Although much of the reports’ details are redacted, what can be gleaned is that these technologies represent a literal quantum leap beyond the properties of all existing material known to man,” the researcher, Anthony Bragalia, wrote in his blog, UFO Explorations, reports The Daily Mail.
Bragalia said he secured more than 150 pages from the DIA after the agency responded to a request he submitted three years ago.
“The original 2017 FOIA request made to the DIA asks for the physical descriptions, properties, and composition of UFO/UAP material held by the government and its contractor,” he said, adding that the documents refer to “UFO/UAP material and physical debris recovered by personnel of the Department of Defense as residue, flotsam, shot-off material or crashed UAPs or unidentified flying objects.”
He attached the request and parts of the five documents he was given access to, showing that testing was being carried out by Bigelow Aerospace, a Las Vegas, Nevada-based company that performs private contract jobs for the Department of Defense.

Around 10 pounds of explosives have vanished from a Marine Corps base in Southern California, reports said Thursday.
The explosives, identified as C-4, were being stored at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, KGTV-TV of San Diego first reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.
“Out of respect for the investigative process, NCIS does not comment on or confirm details relating to ongoing investigations,” Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) spokesman Jeff Houston told Fox News in an email early Friday.
The C-4 disappeared during a long training exercise two weeks earlier and may have been stolen. A reward was being offered for its safe return, the San Diego station reported.
C-4 is a high-powered explosive and one-tenth of the amount stolen could blow up a car, a former bomb technician told KGTV.

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – Alaska State Troopers have released additional information on the bear attack Saturday near Chilkoot Lake, about ten miles northwest of Haines.
The dispatch says the group of three hikers unknowingly happened upon a den containing a brown bear and an unknown number of cubs.
The people told troopers the sow exited the den in a defensive manner and attacked one of them. They say the bear then ended the attack and left the area.
The party was in steep terrain at about the 1,600-foot level so a Coast Guard helicopter was called in to effect the rescue. The dispatch says the victim remains in stable condition in Anchorage.
Fish and Game Department biologists and Alaska Wildlife Troopers are investigating.

A preliminary investigation has not found enough evidence to criminally charge the U.S. Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt, one of the rioters who stormed the building on Jan. 6, according to reports Monday that cited unnamed sources familiar with the inquiry.
Snow was already falling over much of Massachusetts early Monday and spreading across the state from south to north.
Exclusive video obtained by The Washington Post shows the suspect shortly before he allegedly placed an explosive device near the headquarters of the Republican National Committee.
The two pipe bombs that were discovered on Jan. 6 near the U.S. Capitol shortly before a mob stormed the building are believed to have been planted the night before, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation and video footage obtained by The Washington Post.
The explosive devices, which were placed blocks from one another at the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees, have been largely overshadowed by the violent insurrection at the Capitol. But finding the person suspected of planting both bombs remains a priority for federal authorities, who last week boosted the reward for tips leading to the person’s arrest from $50,000 to $75,000.

Hundreds of pets have died and others have been sickened after eating recalled pet food manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) updated recall notice.
As of Jan. 21, the FDA became aware that more than 110 dogs died and over 210 others fell ill after consuming food from the company’s Oklahoma plant “that may contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxins.”
However, as new information becomes available, “case counts and the scope of this recall may expand,” the FDA said.
Earlier this month, the company expanded its recall “out of an abundance of caution” to include pet food products containing corn that were manufactured in the company’s Oklahoma manufacturing plant and have an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022.

Dominion Voting Systems says it is seeking more than $1.3 billion in damages after a series of outrageous claims by an attorney working to support Trump’s objections to the 2020 race.
The elections company Dominion Voting Systems, which has been at the center of many of President Trump’s conspiracy narratives about the 2020 election, filed suit Friday against one of the loudest amplifiers of those false stories.
The company sued Sidney Powell, a lawyer who previously worked for the Trump campaign, who has spent much of the past two months claiming Dominion rigged the election and was somehow tied to the Venezuelan regime of Hugo Chavez.
None of those claims are true; Dominion was founded in Toronto, is now headquartered in Denver, Co., and its machines have been used in American elections for more than a decade. Chavez died in 2013.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and in it Dominion asks for more than $1.3 billion in damages. Powell’s “viral disinformation campaign” has destroyed the value of the business, the lawsuit says.

At least three men have lost their jobs as a result of their involvement in the unrest at the US Capitol Wednesday.
Rick Saccone, a former Pennsylvania state representative, shared images on his Facebook page of himself outside the Capitol. Saint Vincent College, where Saccone served as an adjunct professor, immediately began an investigation, according to Michael Hustava, the institution’s Senior Director of Marketing and Communications.“As a result of that investigation, Dr. Saccone has submitted and we have accepted his letter of resignation, effective immediately. He will no longer be associated with Saint Vincent College in any capacity,” Hustava said in a statement provided to CNN.“I decided to resign for the betterment of the school,” Saccone told the Tribune-Review, a news outlet in Western Pennsylvania, about his departure. “I’ve been there 21 years. I didn’t want all this terrible media kerfuffle to tarnish the school. I decided it would be better if I just resigned.”

Paul Gosar, retweeted a video posted that claims some of the individuals who stormed the Capitol Building were “dressed up and had knee pads,” made a claim that the incident has “all the hallmarks of Antifa provocation,” without offering any evidence to support that claim.

The suspect behind the Christmas Day bombing in downtown Nashville has been identified as 63-year-old Anthony Quinn Warner, authorities confirmed during a press conference Sunday.
Police said Warner owned the RV that exploded in downtown Nashville early Friday, and that he died during the blast.
Human tissue was found amongst the debris left behind by the explosion, and investigators linked it to Warner.

Suspect Duke Webb, 37, of Florida was charged with three counts of murder and three counts of first-degree attempted murder for Saturday night’s bloodbath in Rockford, police and prosecutors said.
“We believe this was a completely random act and there is no prior meeting or any kind of relationship between the suspect and any of the victims in this case,” Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said.
The Army confirmed to The Post that Webb is a Special Forces Assistant Operations and Intelligence sergeant assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), located at Camp Bull Simons at the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
He joined the Army in 2008 and was on leave when the shooting occurred, the Army said, without elaborating why. It was unclear why Webb was in Illinois.“
We are shocked and saddened to learn about this tragic event, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and wounded,” Webb’s commander, Col. John W. Sannes, said in a statement, as the Army vowed “full assistance” in the investigation.
Webb was busted minutes after police arrived at the 7 p.m. bloodbath at the outside Shooters Bar, the only part of the Don Carter Lanes bowling-alley complex open during coronavirus restrictions.

Three people were killed and three injured in a Saturday night shooting at a bowling alley in Rockford, Illinois, local media reported, citing police.
A person of interest was reported to be in custody, said NBC Chicago.

Rockford police Chief Dan O’Shea told reporters that the shooting occurred inside and outside of the building. The area was no longer considered an active shooter situation, WREX reported.

The conditions of the three people injured have not been confirmed, WREX reported. Police did not say if the victims were patrons or workers of the business, the television station reported.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Federal agents converged Saturday on the home of a possible person of interest in the explosion that rocked downtown Nashville as investigators scoured hundreds of tips and leads in the blast that pulverized city blocks on Christmas morning and damaged dozens of buildings.
More than 24 hours after the explosion, a motive remained elusive as investigators worked round-the-clock to resolve unanswered questions about a recreational vehicle that blew up on a mostly deserted street on a sleepy holiday morning and was prefaced by a recorded warning advising those nearby to evacuate. The attack, which damaged an AT&T building, continued to wreak havoc Saturday on cellphone service and police and hospital communications in several Southern states.
Investigators from multiple federal and local law enforcement agencies were at a home in Antioch, in suburban Nashville, after receiving information relevant to the investigation, said FBI Special Agent Jason Pack. Another law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said investigators regard a person associated with the property as a person of interest.

She said she saw police cordon off 2nd Avenue to prevent anyone from going down it.David Malloy was out walking his dog, a black German shepherd named DJ, when he noticed police cars on every corner.Then he heard a voice that he thought was coming from a police car telling people to “evacuate” and “please stand back.”As the countdown grew closer to its end, the message emanating from the RV changed, according to surveillance video taken from a building across the street.“If you can hear this message, evacuate now,” the voice said at about 6:30 a.m. “If you can hear this message, evacuate now.”Then a bang and a blinding flash.Malloy, with his dog, said he asked an officer whether they were supposed to evacuate when he saw the explosion.“It was just this huge fireball explosion,” he said. “I didn’t know what to make of it.”Williams and her family saw the explosive fireball as they were driving down 2nd Avenue, she said.“Everything just, I mean, everything shook. It was quite the blast,” she said.When Buck McCoy looked outside, he saw trees down everywhere and broken glass littering the street.“Everything on the street was fire,” he said. “There were three cars that were fully engulfed.”
