Gov. Andrew Cuomo tendered his resignation — and let’s all wish Kathy Hochul well

It’s over. Faced with universal demands for him to step down and clearly unable to govern, Gov. Andrew Cuomo did the only sane thing: He tendered his resignation.

It was only a matter of time, of course. No one wanted him around anymore. If he hadn’t quit voluntarily, the Legislature would’ve booted him.

Opposition to his continued tenure mushroomed not only because of the charges of sexual misconduct from numerous women, devastating as they were, or his deadly nursing home scandal — his efforts to damn his accusers and cover up the care home facts were added outrages.

No, animosity had grown, as John Podhoretz noted in The Post, even before his scandals broke. He’d racked up a lifetime of enemies, mostly through thuggishness, an attitude that also backfired on the last New York governor to step down, Eliot Spitzer.

Cuomo’s departure leaves the state in the hands of his lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, who’s largely unknown — and untested — at a key moment for the state. When then-Lt. Gov. David Paterson took over from Spitzer in 2008, following a prostitution scandal, he’d served in the state Senate for decades, including as minority leader.

Hochul will preside over a state facing soaring crime and a post-COVID economy struggling to recover. Enormous fiscal challenges lie just down the road, and next year’s race for governor will only add complexity.

Worst, she’ll have to hold back radicalized lawmakers whose agenda — yet more anti-cop measures, raising taxes further and yet more irresponsible state spending and bank-busting programs like single-payer health care — would be disastrous.

Her first order of business, of course: Clean house at the Capitol’s Second Floor, removing Cuomo loyalists, especially those linked to his numerous scandals.

Paterson managed to see the state through, despite the rocky economy at the time; Hochul might face an even heavier lift. New Yorkers should wish her well.

Senate to pass bipartisan infrastructure bill

The bill’s Senate passage will be a major step for Democrats as they try to push through a sprawling economic agenda.

 POINTS
  • The Senate is expected to pass a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill Tuesday as Democrats move ahead with their economic agenda.
  • The chamber will next move to pass a budget resolution that would allow Democrats to approve their $3.5 trillion spending bill without Republican votes.
  • The House is waiting to take up either plan until the Senate approves both.

Gregg Jarrett on the secret JFK assassination files: What is the government hiding? | Fox News

Decades after the popular president was gunned down in broad daylight, many people are still asking ‘who really killed Kennedy’ — and, why won’t the government release all the assassination records?

Many unanswered questions remain about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22nd, 1963. In the decades since, conspiracy theories and speculation of all kinds have surfaced, adding to the swell of allure surrounding the single event that changed – and continues to mystify – the country.

Now, nearly 60 years later, Fox Nation is revisiting that tragic day in Dallas, as calls grow for the government to release all of their secret files.

Fox News legal analyst and host of ‘JFK: The Conspiracy Continues’ Gregg Jarrett joined ‘Fox & Friends’ Monday, telling co-host Will Cain that the government is to blame for the skepticism — asserting that most Americans don’t believe the beloved 35th U.S. president was shot and killed by a lone gunman.

“The government, to this day, continues to hide thousands of assassination records,” said Jarrett, who noted that, by law, President Biden has until October 26th of this year to release those documents.

Cain asked the legal analyst why the FBI and the CIA have been actively working to keep these files secret, to which Jarrett replied by taking jabs at both organizations:

“The fact that they have worked sedulously and secretly behind the scenes to stop these documents from being released to the American public invites the question, what are they hiding?”

“Americans are entitled to the truth of this,” asserted Jarrett.

The truth, though, has perplexed Americans from the very beginning.

Newt Gingrich Goes Full ‘Great Replacement Theory’ in Maria Bartiromo Interview on Fox Business

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared to fully subscribe to the racist “Great Replacement Theory” in an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo Wednesday.

In a conversation about Mexican immigrants traveling to the country amid rising COVID-19 cases and low job numbers, Gingrich claimed the immigrants did nothing to represent “traditional, classic Americans.”

“The anti-American left would love to drown traditional, classic Americans with as many people as they can who know nothing of American history, nothing of American tradition, nothing of the rule of law,” he said.

Andrew Cuomo top aide Melissa DeRosa resigns – CNNPolitics

(CNN)New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s top aide Melissa DeRosa resigned late Sunday, less than a week after the release of a report from the state attorney general that found Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve the people of New York for the past 10 years. New Yorkers’ resilience, strength, and optimism through the most difficult times has inspired me every day,” DeRosa secretary to the governor said in a statement obtained by CNN.
“Personally, the past 2 years have been emotionally and mentally trying. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such talented and committed colleagues on behalf of our state,” she said in the message, which did not mention Cuomo.
DeRosa’s resignation comes on the eve of a meeting of the state Assembly’s Judiciary Committee that could deliver a timeline for Cuomo’s potential impeachment. The 38-year-old, who held the highest-ranking appointed position in the state, appeared throughout New York State Attorney General Letitia James’ August 3 report, in which investigators concluded that Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women, including current and former state employees. The report detailed a “toxic” workplace environment under Cuomo and said that environment allowed for his allegedly harassing behavior to go overlooked. It also highlighted alleged instances of retaliation against at least one accuser.
Cuomo has denied the allegations, saying last week that he “never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances.”
In February, DeRosa came under scrutiny for her role in the administration’s underreporting of Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes last year.
In a private virtual conversation with lawmakers, DeRosa said the administration had not provided them with information requested months earlier because Cuomo’s team had been concerned about a preliminary inquiry from former President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice, according to a transcript of the conversation that was subsequently released by the governor’s office.
“And basically, we froze,” DeRosa told Democrats on the call, “because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice or what we give to you guys, what we start saying was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation.”
DeRosa accused Trump of turning the nursing home issue into a “political football” and then directing “a political hack” at the Justice Department to begin an inquiry into New York and other Democratic-led states.
A different report from James’ office released in January found that New York had underreported Covid-19 deaths among residents of nursing homes by approximately 50%.

France: Thousands of protestors continue to demonstrate against COVID-19 health passes

The protests come after France’s highest court upheld the majority of a new law mandating the health pass and the vaccination of health-care workers.

Thousands of protesters flocked to the streets throughout France on Saturday, August 7, for the fourth weekend in a row to demonstrate against a new pandemic health permit that is required to access most establishments or use public transportation. The current round of demonstrations comes after France’s highest court upheld the majority of a new law mandating the health pass and the vaccination of healthcare professionals against the coronavirus. According to the court, the stipulations were in line with the nation’s founding charter.

As per a notification issued by the French government on July 29, residents were expected to “present a health pass to access leisure and culture venues and events bringing together more than 50 people.” The health cards will be required to enter pubs, restaurants, and shopping centres starting Monday, as well as for the long-distance travel by plane, rail, or bus.

President Emmanuel Macron has pushed for the pass, which requires confirmation of vaccination, a negative coronavirus test result within the last 48 hours, or proof of recovery from the virus for at least 15 days (but not more than six months).

Macron thinks that the new laws will encourage inhabitants to get vaccinated and prevent the spread of the fast-spreading Delta strain of the coronavirus as France approaches the “fourth wave” of the pandemic. According to polls, the majority of French citizens approve the health passes.

Ohio Rep. Bob Gibbs seeks articles of impeachment against Biden | Fox News

An Ohio congressman on Friday asked his GOP House colleagues to consider filing articles of impeachment against President Biden for an “unconstitutional” order to extend the eviction moratorium and for his “dereliction” of duty in securing the southern border.

Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Ohio, sent a letter to his fellow Republicans urging them to seek impeachment because Biden “continues to disregard his constitutional duties and boundaries,” he said.

MCCONNELL RIPS BIDEN ADMIN FOR BOWING TO ‘FAR LEFT’ WITH EVICTION MORATORIUM EXTENSION

Gibbs cites Biden bowing to progressive pressure this week to extend a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) eviction moratorium even after the president acknowledged it likely won’t pass constitutional muster. The White House previously said its hands were tied by a recent Supreme Court opinion and couldn’t extend the protections for renters unilaterally, but Biden reversed course after outrage from the left.

9/11 families tell Joe Biden to stay away from memorial service if he doesn’t authorize release of records related to attacks – CNNPolitics

(CNN)More than 1,600 people affected by the September 11 attacks are asking President Joe Biden to refrain from coming to Ground Zero to mark the 20th anniversary of the event unless he releases documents and information related to the attacks, according to a letter released by the group.

“Despite numerous requests by Democratic and Republican members of Congress and hundreds of 9/11 family members imploring previous and now the current administration to bring transparency to the matter, these efforts have been rebuffed and the issue has remained inexplicably ignored,” the letter reads in part.
“We want to see tangible proof before the 20th anniversary of 9/11 that this Administration is truly committed to transparency,” said Brett Eagleson, the first signatory of the letter, in a statement. “These documents involve a terrorist attack that occurred 20 years ago, and there is no justification to withhold them.”
Eagleson’s father, Bruce, was killed in the attack on the World Trade Center.
“The 9/11 families deserve justice and closure. Matter of fact, all Americans deserve to know the truth behind what the Saudi Arabanian government’s role was in 9/11. And there’s significant evidence. The FBI has it. The DOJ doesn’t deny that it exists,” Eagleson told CNN’s Michael Smerconish on “Cuomo Prime Time” Friday.
“We need the President to be our hero. Be our champion, Mr. President. This is a direct appeal to you. Help us in this fight. Stand by our side. Allow us to have the justice and closure that we deserve,” he said.
Signatories of the letter claim that they have been used as a political bargaining chip for two decades.
“We had great hope that President Biden, who campaigned on bringing truth and trust back to the Oval Office, would value the lives and sacrifices of America’s citizens over diplomatic relations with a country accused of mass murder,” the letter reads.

65% of African-Americans Banned from Dining in NYC After de Blasio Implements Vaccine Passport

New York City’s COVID-19 vaccination passports disproportionately disadvantage black communities and it isn’t even close.

Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city’s plan to implement COVID-19 vaccination requirements for gyms, restaurants and other businesses.

“It’s time for people to see vaccination as necessary to living a good and full and healthy life,” de Blasio said during a news conference.

Mark Levin demands reticent GOP craft Biden impeachment: A ‘coward’ who intentionally hurts his own people | Fox News Opinion

Former Reagan DOJ Chief of Staff Mark Levin called on otherwise silent Republicans to rally behind and craft impeachment articles against President Joe Biden, saying he is intentionally disregarding federal law and the fact his administration continues to issue dictates to his own people while allowing thousands of unvetted and COVID-infected illegal immigrants into the U.S. largely unencumbered by such restrictions.

Levin, host of “Life, Liberty & Levin“, told “Hannity” that Biden’s culpability in several critical American crises remains so whether or not his actions are “by design… or the fact he’s dim-witted.”

Joe Biden is the most disastrous president in modern American history,” he said, adding that Biden’s and the federal health bureaucracies’ unending and ever-changing mandates or recommendations imposed on the American people while the southern border remains open to all is akin to a 20th Century president instructing Americans to get a polio vaccine while “inviting people into the country that he knows have polio.”

Levin said Biden is actively ushering in thousands of illegal immigrants because they represent innumerable prospective Democratic voters – voters that he said will “turn Texas and Arizona blue” and thereby give Democrats a guaranteed congressional majority for at least a generation.

On the Texas border, thousands of illegal migrants have overwhelmed cities like McAllen, while exclusive Fox drone footage has shown large groups of migrants being housed under the Anzalduas Bridge that runs between Texas and the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

“No president has ever done this to his own people. He is a coward and he buckles to the radical left. He’s no fool. The idea that people who are vaccinated are the ones who are going to be punished, it’s like gun owners who are law-abiding are the ones are going to be punished,” said Levin, adding that Biden and his party hold the same disdain for the unvaccinated as they do for successful working-class Americans – “they’re the ones they tend to punish with the tax code.”

Landlords sue to stop Biden’s ‘nakedly political’ eviction ban – POLITICO

A coalition of 11 housing industry groups said in a statement Wednesday evening that they opposed the new ban.

Trade groups representing property owners late Wednesday sued to block a new federal eviction moratorium that President Joe Biden himself warned this week was on shaky legal ground.

The Alabama and Georgia chapters of the National Association of Realtors filed a motion in federal court to vacate the ban that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ordered Tuesday. The same groups led a legal challenge against the prior federal eviction moratorium that expired Saturday — a lawsuit that prompted the Supreme Court to cast doubt on the CDC’s authority.

President Biden Announces on Live TV That He Intends to Break His Oath of Office | National Review

President Biden knows that the CDC’s eviction moratorium is illegal, having, per Gene Sperling, “not only kicked the tires,” but “double, triple, quadruple checked.” He also knows that the Supreme Court has ruled that it is illegal, and that the majority of the legal scholars he has consulted think that the Court is correct.

And yet, because a bunch of progressives have spent the day complaining, Biden announced just now that he intends to violate his oath and reissue the order anyway. “The bulk of the constitutional scholars,” Biden admitted at his press conference just now, “say it’s not likely to pass constitutional muster.” Then he said that he was prepared to try his luck anyway.

Psaki dodges questions when asked about claims of ‘abusive’ top aide Anthony Bernal who works for First Lady Jill Biden

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday deflected when asked about a report that alleged abusive behavior by a top aide to first lady Jill Biden.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday deflected when asked about a report that alleged abusive behavior by a top aide to first lady Jill Biden, saying it’s “hard to look into” the allegations because the claims were made anonymously.

Anthony Bernal was accused of a “mean streak” in a Politico report that alleged it’s common knowledge that he makes colleagues cry while controlling access to the first lady.

“You know, it’s hard to look into anonymously sourced reports. I’m not aware of that being the intention,” Psaki told reporters at her daily press briefing.

Bernal has a habit of “berating” people and trashes his “stupid” coworkers behind their backs, according to the report.

President Biden said in January that he would fire aides “on the spot” if he hears they “treat another colleague with disrespect or talk down to someone.” But he hasn’t always lived up to that pledge. For example, Biden initially stood by spokesman TJ Ducklo in February when he made derisive remarks toward a female reporter.

The Biden Administration Issues A New Eviction Moratorium After A Federal Ban Lapsed : NPR

After intense pressure from progressives, the CDC has announced a more limited eviction moratorium days after an earlier freeze on evictions expired.

Days after a national eviction moratorium expired, the Biden administration on Tuesday issued a new, more limited freeze that remains in effect through Oct. 3.

Like the previous order, the two-month moratorium issued Tuesday comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new ban on evictions covers parts of the United States that are experiencing what the CDC calls “substantial” and “high” spread of the coronavirus.

As of Tuesday afternoon, that’s the vast majority of U.S. counties.

The order, which cites the rise of the delta variant, says: “Without this Order, evictions in these [higher transmission] areas would likely exacerbate the increase in cases.”

“Where we are right now with such high disease rates, we felt a new, tailored order [was needed] to make sure that … working Americans who were at risk of eviction could be stably housed during this really tenuous, challenging period of time,” the CDC’s director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, told NPR’s All Things Considered.

Maxine Waters, in one despicable tweet, shows all that’s evil with the left – Washington Times

Cheryl K. Chumley

Rep. Maxine Waters took to Twitter to rage against the failure of her folks on the left to properly push forward the money needed to keep the free market from freely evicting those who won’t pay to stay, and in so doing, unwittingly, revealed all that’s evil about the Democrats.

They can’t — won’t — acknowledge properly placed, constitutionally stamped limits on the power of government.

“I don’t buy that the CDC can’t extend the eviction moratorium — something it has already done in the past! Who is going to stop them? Who is going to penalize them? There is no official ruling,” Waters tweeted, “saying that they cannot extend this moratorium. C’mon CDC — have a heart! Just do it!”

Meghan McCain on hypothetical Kamala Harris run to replace Biden: ‘Ron DeSantis would put her in the ground’ | Fox News

During a discussion on Harris’ unpopularity in polls, McCain argued it was evident she “needed more media training” because of the tactical errors she had made since taking office, and that if she was up against DeSantis in the 2024 general election, he would “put her in the ground.”

“I think she stumbled when she was running for president. She dropped out before Iowa. She was a very early dropout. She wasn’t resonating with voters way before President Biden was elected,” McCain said in response to co-host Whoopi Goldberg asking if she thought Harris “stumbled coming out of the gate.”

McCain criticized the media’s tone in how outlets covered Harris’ leadership on the border crisis, specifically calling out the discrepancy in how they approached children being placed in “cages” while in border facilities under former President Trump versus the current administration.

Officer who responded to January 6 attack is third to die by suicide – CNNPolitics

(CNN)A DC police officer who responded to the US Capitol insurrection has died by suicide, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

“Officer Gunther Hashida, assigned to the Emergency Response Team within the Special Operations Division, was found deceased in his residence on Thursday, July 29,” department spokesperson Kristen Metzger told CNN in a statement.
Hashida joined the Metropolitan Police Department in 2003 and responded to the Capitol on January 6, Metzger said.
“We are grieving as a Department and our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends,” Metzger said.
This is the third known suicide of an officer who responded to the Capitol during the attack, and it is the second known suicide by a DC officer specifically.
Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, a 12-year veteran of the force, and US Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood, a 16-year Capitol Police veteran, also responded to the insurrection and later died by suicide. A recent Senate report into the security failures of the day lists both Smith and Liebengood among those who “ultimately lost their lives” following the attack.
Another Capitol Police officer, Brian D. Sicknick, suffered strokes and died of natural causes one day after responding to the attack, Washington DC’s chief medical examiner determined in April.
The Justice Department has charged more than 550 people in connection with the insurrection, according to CNN’s latest tally, and the attack is at the center of a high-profile House select committee investigation.
During a hearing before the panel last month, Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn delivered an emotional plea to officers who defended the Capitol to seek out professional help if they need it.
“I want to take this moment and speak to my fellow officers about the emotions they are continuing to experience from the events of January 6. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking professional counseling,” Dunn said.
“What we all went through that day was traumatic, and if you are hurting, please take advantage of the counseling services that are available to us.”

‘Vote them out’: Willie Nelson headlines Texas protest rally

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Country music legend Willie Nelson led more than a thousand spectators in singing “vote them out” Saturday from the steps of the Texas Capitol during a rally wrapping up a four-day march in support of Democratic state legislators who bolted for Washington two weeks ago to block GOP-backed voting restrictions.

Families with lawn chairs spread out across the sprawling Capitol greens in Austin. Clergy, politicians, constituents and musicians all spoke out about the proposals to impose voter ID requirements, limit ballot drop boxes and mail voting, and strip local officials of their election authority.

The special session that the exodus by Texas Democrats halted is set to expire next week, but Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has pledged to schedule a new one as soon as the lawmakers return to the state.

“If you don’t like who’s in there, vote them out,” Nelson sang, inviting he crowd to join him in singing lyrics he’d previously written about taking a stand at the ballot box.

“I felt like I needed to be here. It is a history-making event that is so necessary right now,” said Brenda Hanson, 75, of Austin. “I am a descendant of slavery and I am not interested in moving back, I want to see this country go forward. I have lived well over three quarters of a century and I have never seen us go backwards like this before.”

Hanson said she is disabled but otherwise would have participated in the nearly 30-mile walk. Instead, she hoped to make a statement with her presence as she sat chanting in support on a bench under a tree.

The march began Wednesday and ended Saturday when participants walked up to the doors of the Texas Capitol building in a rally sponsored by activist group Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. It was led, in part, by Beto O’Rourke, the former Democratic congressman and presidential candidate who has not ruled out a run for Texas governor in 2022. Earlier this week, O’Rourke and marchers shut down the frontage road of Interstate 35 during the morning rush hour, funneled between restaurants and cut a path from Republican-controlled statehouse districts to Democratic ones.

Marchers compared what the GOP says are measures meant to protect against fraud and restore confidence in American elections to Jim Crow-style restrictions. There has been no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

“I ask you to think about every man and every woman who had the courage in their convictions and did what they needed to do in their own moment of truth in this country’s history,” O’Rourke told the crowd.

San Francisco activists gather at Pelosi’s home to serve ‘eviction notice’ | Fox News

Housing and homeless advocates protested outside of Nancy Pelosi‘s San Francisco home Saturday demanding the House Speaker reconvene Congress to pass an extension to the expiring eviction moratorium.

The House adjourned Friday for summer recess without passing legislation to extend a nationwide ban on evictions that is set to expire Saturday, prompting outrage from the progressive Squad and an overnight protest at the Capitol.

About 40 activists headed to Pelosi’s home on Saturday to tape an “eviction notice” on her door to remind the speaker that millions of Americans will be facing eviction starting this weekend while she sleeps comfortably in her posh home. “The reason that we’re at her house is that she has a beautiful mansion in Pacific Heights in San Francisco, and it shows how out of touch she is with the people that are facing a situation [of eviction],” Christin Evans, one of the activists outside of Pelosi’s home, told Fox News.

Pa. Gov. Wolf visiting Pittsburgh Friday

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf was in Pittsburgh to celebrate the anniversaries of Pennie and Medicaid, and to discuss affordable health care coverage.

The Ceo of the center, Rodney B. Jones, said it means a lot the governor chose the center to spread the message of affordable health care.

Jones said it’s a place where people with or without insurance can get quality health care.

He said, “It’s important that everyone has the ability to get quality affordable healthcare regardless of his or her insurance status.”

Jones said the federal and state-funded health care center’s mission is to help under-served families in urban and rural communities in 69 zip codes in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.

Wolf said, “Access to quality health care is really important. It’s the right thing to do and I’ve been fighting to expand access to health care since I took office. That’s why one of the first things I did was to expand Medicaid.”

Two programs were the focus of the celebration, Pennie and Medicaid. Pennie is the official health insurance marketplace for Pennsylvania where people can apply for financial help to lower the cost of monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs for health insurance. Pennie also helps people find out what savings they qualify for from the American Rescue Plan.

“Now with Pennie, we are evolving to a point where we are casting a broader net to ensure that everyone gets affordable health care,” said Jones.

Medicaid is a federal and state program to help with healthcare costs. Lauren Stuparitz, who is a recipient, said without these programs, her family couldn’t afford care and it’s very important to take care of yourself, especially during a pandemic.

She said, “Assurance of having health care helps me feel more stable, secure and confident that I can take care of my family, that I can do things that are meaningful in life.”

The governor said he wants all people to understand what their options are when it comes to health care and to make the best choice for their families.

Hunter Biden art exhibition led to Rep. Michael Waltz’s transparency bill

A Florida Republican congressman is set to introduce a bill requiring presidents and vice presidents provide financial disclosures for their non-dependent children ahead of Hunter Biden’s much-criticized art exhibition.

Rep. Michael Waltz told Fox News Tuesday his legislation, the Preventing Anonymous Income by Necessitating Transparency of Executive Relatives (PAINTER) Act, is a bid to stop “the obvious and shameless grift that’s going on with Hunter Biden’s art sales, for which he is obviously not qualified to do and is only doing to continue to profit off of his family name.”

The first son will present a solo exhibition of 15 paintings at galleries in New York and Los Angeles this fall. Prices for the art will range from $75,000 for works on paper to $500,000 for the larger canvases.

Critics have warned that would-be purchasers of Hunter’s art could spend big money not to purchase a masterpiece, but to curry favor with the West Wing.

“The whole thing is a really bad idea,” former George W. Bush chief ethics lawyer Richard Painter told The Washington Post earlier this month. “The initial reaction a lot of people are going to have is that he’s capitalizing on being the son of a president and wants people to give him a lot of money. I mean, those are awfully high prices.”

Ellzey was carrying more than 53% of the vote in Texas’ 6th Congressional District with results from almost all precincts reported.

‘This is how I’m going to die’: Officers tell Jan. 6 stories

WASHINGTON (AP) — “This is how I’m going to die, defending this entrance,” Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell recalled thinking, testifying Tuesday at the emotional opening hearing of the congressional panel investigating the violent Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

Gonell told House investigators he could feel himself losing oxygen as he was crushed by rioters – supporters of then-President Donald Trump – as he tried to hold them back and protect the Capitol and lawmakers.

He and three other officers gave their accounts of the attack, sometimes wiping away tears, sometimes angrily rebuking Republicans who have resisted the probe and embraced Trump’s downplaying of the day’s violence.

Six months after the insurrection, with no action yet taken to bolster Capitol security or provide a full accounting of what went wrong, the new panel launched its investigation by starting with the law enforcement officers who protected them. Along with graphic video of the hand-to-hand fighting, the officers described being beaten as they held off the mob that broke through windows and doors and interrupted the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential win.

Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone, who rushed to the scene, told the committee — and millions watching news coverage — that he was “grabbed, beaten, tased, all while being called a traitor to my country.” That assault on him, which stopped only when he said he had children, caused him to have a heart attack.

Daniel Hodges, also a D.C. police officer, said he remembered foaming at the mouth and screaming for help as rioters crushed him between two doors and bashed him in the head with his own weapon. He said there was “no doubt in my mind” that the rioters were there to kill members of Congress.

Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn said one group of rioters, perhaps 20 people, screamed the n-word at him as he was trying to keep them from breaching the House chamber — racial insults he said he had never experienced while in uniform. At the end of that day, he sat down in the Capitol Rotunda and sobbed.

“I became very emotional and began yelling, ’How the (expletive) can something like this happen?” Dunn testified. “Is this America?”

Republican lawmaker blames his party for lack of answers in emotional statement

The House select committee investigating the deadly Capitol riot is holding its first high-profile hearing today. Follow here for the latest news.

Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger called out other members of his party, saying “we need to reject those that promote” conspiracies about the insurrection on the US Capitol on Jan. 6.

He said he agreed to serve on this select committee because he wants to know what happened that day and present the facts to the public “free of conspiracy,” adding he wants Americans to be able to trust the committee.

“This cannot continue to be a partisan fight. I’m a Republican. I’m a conservative. But in order to heal from the damage caused that day, we need to call out the facts. It is time to stop the outrage and the conspiracies that fuel the violence and division in this country and most importantly, we need to reject those that promote it,” he said.

Kinzinger got emotional during his comments to the four officers who were testifying.

WASHINGTON — Republican Liz Cheney made clear Tuesday she wants the committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection to have teeth, moving quickly to use subpoenas to force testimony from key witnesses. Cheney said Americans should know what happened “every minute of that day” inside the Trump White House.

“The task of this committee will require persistence,” the Wyoming congresswoman said in opening remarks at the committee’s first hearing on Capitol Hill. She is one of two Republicans on the bipartisan panel.

Cheney said the committee should move to “issue and enforce subpoenas.”

“We must overcome the many efforts we are already seeing to cover up the facts,” she said.

Cheney specifically noted that “we must know what happened here at the Capitol” but also that the committee should find out what happened “every minute of that day in the White House: every phone call, every conversation, every meeting leading up to, during and after the attack.”

That comment shows that Cheney and others on the committee plan to use subpoena power to compel testimony from top officials in the Trump White House, such as former chief of staff Mark Meadows, former Vice President Mike Pence and former President Donald Trump himself.
