Biden defensive in rare solo news conference ahead of 1-year mark in office – ABC News

On the eve of the one-year anniversary of his inauguration, President Joe Biden held a formal news conference at the White House Wednesday, fielding reporter questions on his handling of the pandemic, the economy and his legislative agenda, characterizing the country as unified — but not as much as it could be — and raising eyebrows by saying Russia was likely to invade Ukraine.

“It’s been a year of challenges, but it’s also many years of enormous progress,” Biden said to begin, ticking through his administration’s successes before fielding questions from reporters.

With Biden facing the limits of what he can accomplish with an evenly-divided Senate, unable to get either his signature social spending package or major voting rights reform through Congress in recent weeks, and with the pandemic still raging well into its second, his approval rating in polls has hit an all-time low. A Jan. 12 Quinnipiac poll found his approval rating to be 33%, a 3-point drop from November.

“Should we have done more testing earlier? Yes,” Biden said in his opening remarks. “But we’re doing more now. We’ve gone from zero at-home tests a year ago to 375 million tests on the market just this month.”

He said the bottom line on COVID-19 is the country is “in a better place than we’ve been and have been thus far” and reiterated his position not to go back to lockdowns and school closures.

“Some people may call what’s happening now a new normal. I call it a job not yet finished,” Biden said with confidence. “We’re moving toward a time that COVID-19 won’t disrupt our daily lives or COVID-19 won’t be a crisis, but something to protect against and a threat. Look, we’re not there yet. We will get there.”

Democrats Fail in Push to Change Senate Filibuster, Sinking Elections Bill

WASHINGTON—Democrats failed in their effort to change the Senate’s filibuster procedures to muscle through blocked elections legislation, dealing a setback to President Biden and party leaders on what they have termed their top domestic policy priority.

With Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona siding with all Republicans in the evenly split Senate, 52 lawmakers opposed the rule change, while 48 were in favor, shy of the majority required.

The Democrats’ gambit was a last-ditch effort to salvage a sweeping elections bill that unified the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party. Earlier, Republicans had blocked the elections bill from advancing, with 49 votes in support and 51 against, short of the 60 needed. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) voted “no” to preserve the right to bring the bill back up for a vote.

Democrats had made the elections bill and changes to the filibuster two parts of a single campaign, arguing that Republicans are trampling on voting rights, particularly for lower income and minority voters, by tolerating restrictive new state laws and then using Senate procedures to stop Congress from intervening.

Urging passage of the bill and a change to the filibuster if needed, Mr. Schumer asked: “Are we going to let our democracy backslide in the 21st century? Are we going to be dragged back into the abyss of voter suppression?”

Trump Org: NY attorney general’s office says it has identified ‘misleading statements and omissions’ – CNNPolitics

In a court filing late Tuesday, investigators stated the office “intends to make a final determination about who is responsible for those misstatements and omissions,” adding that “OAG requires the testimony and evidence sought herein to determine which Trump Organization employees and affiliates — and which other entities and individuals — may have assisted the Trump Organization and Mr. Trump in making, or may have relevant knowledge about, the misstatements and omissions at issue.”
They write that “witnesses closest to the top of the Trump Organization have asserted their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination. Certain others have professed faulty memories or asserted that they were following instruction from more senior employees.”

Biden plans giveaway of 400M masks as Omicron surges – POLITICO

The Biden administration is planning to distribute hundreds of millions of free, high-quality masks through pharmacies and community health centers, a White House official said Wednesday.

The 400 million newly available masks will be non-surgical N95s that are sourced from the government’s Strategic National Stockpile, as part of an effort to ensure Americans can access the more-protective masks during a record surge of Covid-19 cases.

The initiative — which POLITICO first reported Tuesday evening — comes in response to growing pressure on the administration to encourage Americans to abandon cloth masks in favor of more protective versions, amid evidence that the cloth coverings do not work as well against the more transmissible Omicron variant.

Public health experts and former Biden transition advisers had also lobbied the White House in recent weeks to give out masks, arguing that cheap and genuine N95s are still difficult for people to find.

The administration plans to make the masks available at tens of thousands of pharmacies and health centers by early February, the White House official said, which people will then be able to pick up for free.

The supply will not include child-sized masks, though two people with knowledge of the matter said the government is working to procure them.

Strange and hidden Jupiter-size exoplanet spotted by astronomers and citizen scientists | Space

A group of astronomers and citizen scientists has uncovered a hidden planet the size of Jupiter in a distant solar system, and they should get the chance to see it again soon.

The planet, designated TOI-2180 b, is relatively close to us here on Earth, at only 379 light-years away. But what makes this world special among the sample of known giant exoplanets is that it takes a whopping 261 days to orbit its host star, much longer than most gas giants discovered outside of our solar neighborhood.

The team spotted the world using data gathered by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS. TESS spots exoplanets by finding very small and repeatable dips in a star’s brightness that are caused by a planet blocking a little bit of the star’s light as it transits, or passes between the spacecraft and the star. While TOI-2180 b’s orbital period is not quite confirmed, scientists predict TESS will see the planet again in February.

U.S. Supreme Court blocks Biden vaccine-or-test policy for large businesses

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 vaccination-or-testing mandate for large businesses – a policy the conservative justices deemed an improper imposition on the lives and health of many Americans – while endorsing a separate federal vaccine requirement for healthcare facilities.

Biden voiced disappointment with the conservative-majority court’s decision to halt his administration’s rule requiring vaccines or weekly COVID-19 tests for employees at businesses with at least 100 employees. Biden said it now is up to states and employers to decide whether to require workers “to take the simple and effective step of getting vaccinated.”

It ruled 6-3, with the six conservative justices in the majority and three liberal justices dissenting, in blocking the rule involving large businesses – a policy that applied to more than 80 million employees. The court’s majority downplayed the risk COVID-19 specifically poses in the workplace, comparing it instead to “day-to-day” crime and pollution hazards that individuals face everywhere.

An important thing to remember is that the main energy of this system is still out in the Pacific Ocean.

When the energy is out that far, there are things we can see, but there are many that we can’t. Once this “low” comes on the shore, we will have the opportunity to gather a lot more data from weather balloons and surface instruments.

This will allow us to tighten up the projected path and have a better idea of how this will impact the Pittsburgh area.

Drivers seeing red over flashing yellow signal at Route 30 intersection in Hempfield | TribLIVE.com

Some motorists are having a tough time getting used to a newly installed left-turn-yield traffic signal at North Greengate Road and Route 30, according to social media chatter.

The traffic signal is among 11 upgrades PennDOT has made since last spring along a 3-mile stretch of Route 30 between Jeannette and Hempfield. Bronder Technical Services was awarded a $2.4 million contract for the ongoing work.

As opposed to waiting on a steady green light and yielding to oncoming traffic before making the left turn from North Greengate onto Route 30 toward Greensburg, motorists are greeted by a flashing yellow signal that is designed to let them know it is OK to make a left turn — but to do so with caution and only after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

“It’s a mess. Went from bad to worse,” Dave Blas posted to the popular Across Westmoreland Facebook page.

Andrea Baer of Grapeville said many drivers are unfamiliar with the flashing signal, and she believes they are confused by the “blinking” yellow signal.

The flashing yield signal follows the traditional green turn signal, followed by a steady yellow light and then a brief red light. After a seconds-long pause at red, the flashing yellow begins and lasts about 15 seconds.

Pittsburgh named possible location for 2024 GOP national convention | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh has been named as a possible location for the 2024 GOP national convention, according to Politico.

The Republican National Committee has narrowed its search for a convention location down to four cities, including Milwaukee, Nashville and Salt Lake City.

Politico reported that party officials are planning to visit each city in the coming months before making a final decision in the spring.

Should the party choose Pittsburgh, it would be the first time the city has ever hosted a modern national party convention, either Democrat and Republican.

Pittsburgh police investigating human remains found in shed behind house

Police are investigating after human remains were found in a shed behind a house in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood.

Police were alerted to reports of human remains found in a shed behind a residence on the 300 block of Reifert Street around 4:30 p.m.

Early Sunday morning, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office identified the woman as Crystal Leshner, 38.

Major Crimes Detectives and the Pittsburgh Crime Scene unit were called to the scene to collect evidence.

Neighbor Ronnie Davis said the scene was unsettling.

“I’m a single father, and I have two kids, and if it was a homicide, I need to know,” Davis said.

Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz said the investigation could take time.

“It is going to be a long investigation, of course. This is not usual. We are used to other things in the city, but this is definitely unusual,” Cruz said.

She said it was unclear at that point if the initial report came from someone who lives there.

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 crew on scene saw the medical examiner come to the scene and take the body away.

No information on the demographic or identification of the remains was provided at this time. Cruz said she had no information if there is anyone in custody at this time.

Chicago parents sue teachers union over canceled classes

A group of Chicago parents is suing the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) after teachers refused to return to in-person instruction due to COVID-19 concerns and school officials canceled classes entirely.

Attorneys at the Liberty Justice Center, representing a group of Chicago parents, filed a lawsuit Thursday night to end the union’s “illegal strike.”

Seventy-three percent of teachers in the union voted on Tuesday not to return to the classroom, alleging the city has not done enough to ensure they are protected against the coronavirus as cases spike in the state.

Can the Steelers still make the playoffs?

The Steelers kept their postseason hopes alive by beating the Browns. Pittsburgh still has a chance at a wild-card berth in the AFC playoffs.

Here’s what needs to happen for Pittsburgh to earn a wild-card berth in the AFC playoffs.

  • The Steelers (8-7-1) must defeat the Ravens (8-8) in Baltimore on Sunday.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-14) must defeat the Indianapolis Colts (9-7) at home on Sunday.
  • The Las Vegas Raiders (9-7) vs. the Los Angeles Chargers (9-7) cannot end in a tie.

How likely is that scenario?

Pittsburgh’s chance of going to the playoffs is 8%, according to ESPN. Those are slim odds, but they’re actually improved from 4% before the Cleveland game.

While the Jaguars only have two wins this season, the Colts haven’t beaten them in Jacksonville since 2014.

The Ravens are still alive in the playoff race as well. Baltimore needs a win over Pittsburgh, combined with losses by the Chargers and the Colts, along with a Miami loss or tie.

The Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Raiders and Chargers are all chasing the AFC’s final two playoff berths.

Jan. 6 protester claims in federal lawsuit that D.C. police beat her | Just The News

Victoria White filed a federal lawsuit against the Washington, D.C., police department claiming assault, battery and excessive force after officers allegedly beat her in the West Terrace tunnel of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.White claims she was hit by officers about 40 times in the head and face over the course of four minutes.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and initially sought $1 million in damages, The Epoch Times reports.

Her attorney Joseph McBride points to three hours of surveillance footage from Jan. 6 released last month that allegedly shows White was pushed into the tunnel after she told the crowd not to enter the Capitol. Video reportedly shows White being hit by officers with batons and fists about 40 times over four minutes.

Epoch reports that McBride said he believes a Metro D.C. police supervisor is the officer in a white shirt on video was particularly violent and targeted White’s head and face with a steel baton and punches. The officer is labeled in the lawsuit as Officer John Doe 1.

The lawsuit seeks damages from D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and seven officers “with a dollar amount significantly higher than the preliminary ask of one million dollars,” McBride said. The suit alleges “unreasonable seizure/excessive force and violations of Due Process” and claims including negligence, assault, battery, and emotional distress.

Supreme Court poised to decide limits of Biden vaccine mandates for businesses, health care workers | Fox News

The Supreme Court will hold a high-stakes public session Friday to decide whether the U.S. government can begin enforcing sweeping COVID-19 vaccine requirements.

With the Biden administration citing a “grave danger” to public health caused by unvaccinated Americans, the Supreme Court will hold a fast-tracked, high-stakes public session Friday to decide whether the U.S. government can begin enforcing sweeping COVID-19 vaccine requirements affecting nearly 100 million workers.

The justices will hear separate oral arguments over federal vaccine and testing rules for larger businesses and vaccine mandates for health care workers at facilities receiving Medicaid and Medicare funding. Enforcement of the policies – announced in November – has been put on holding pending resolution in the high court. Written rulings could come within a matter of days.

Antonio Brown’s NFL career took another bizarre turn on Sunday when the wide receiver walked away from his team’s game at MetLife Stadium.

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trailing the New York Jets 24-10 in the third quarter, Brown removed his uniform and pads before walking off the field shirtless. Brown tossed his gloves and shirt into the stands. He waved to fans as he jogged through the end zone and into the tunnel.

Beforehand, teammate Mike Evans appeared to try to calm down Brown, who had three catches for 26 yards in the game.

After Brown bailed on the Bucs, quarterback Tom Brady helped lead a comeback. Brady connected with Cyril Grayson for a 33-yard touchdown play with 15 seconds left to secure a 27-24 victory.

Why can’t we put a space station on the Moon? | Space

A space station on the moon could be very useful to provide future space missions with a stopping point between Earth and deeper space. Why haven’t we built one yet?

One reason we haven’t built a space station on the moon is that we don’t send people there very often. We have only managed to put astronauts on the moon six times so far. These moon landings took place in a three-year period between 1969 and 1972 and were part of a series of space missions called the Apollo missions.

The type of rocket used to get the astronauts to the moon was an extremely powerful one called a Saturn V, which is no longer produced. This means that, at the moment, we do not have a rocket powerful enough to get people to the moon – let alone build a space station there.

We are starting to build powerful rockets again. Space exploration company SpaceX is creating newer and bigger rockets which are capable of taking the weight of astronauts to the moon. NASA is also planning new missions to take astronauts to the moon.

However, there is a big difference between a short trip and building a space station on the moon, which is extremely difficult. One way to do it would be to build it in pieces on Earth, take the pieces to the moon and assemble them there. This would be like how the International Space Station was built: pieces were taken into space and then put together by astronauts aboard the space shuttle.

However, the International Space Station is only 250 miles (400 kilometers) from the surface of Earth. The moon is 230,000 miles (384,000 km). Each trip to the moon would take about three days and would require incredible amounts of fuel, potentially adding to climate problems on Earth.

A much better idea would be to build as much of the base as possible from materials found on the moon. Lunar concrete is being tested on Earth as a possible building material.

On Earth you would make concrete from gravel or sand, cement and water. We have none of those things on the moon, but what we do have is lunar dust and sulphur. These can be melted and mixed together. Once this mixture cools, it produces a solid material that is stronger than many materials we use on Earth.

Eric Adams sworn in as mayor of New York City | New York | The Guardian

Eric Adams is sworn in as Mayor of New York City.

New York City’s new mayor, Eric Adams, was sworn into office soon after midnight yesterday. It was a fitting time of day for a cop-turned-politico who has indicated that he plans to return some personal panache to a metropolis knocked by a pandemic, political strife and an outgoing mayor whose polling ranks beneath even Donald Trump with state voters.

For the moment, Adams’s administration is, as one acquaintance put it, “in the ether”. The Democrat told the city council last week: “We must allow our city to function. We have thrown $11bn at Covid, so the day has come when we need to learn to be smarter.”

Gunman Kills 4 in Shooting Spree Across Denver Area, Police Say – New York Times

A gunman killed four people and wounded at least three others, including a police officer, during a series of shootings in the Denver area on Monday, the police said.

The suspect, whom the authorities did not immediately identify, died during a shootout.

The authorities were seeking a motive after the shootings, which occurred across several locations in and near Denver, Colorado’s capital. Paul M. Pazen, the Denver police chief, told reporters during a news conference: “This is the holiday season. To have this type of spree take place is not normal for our community.”

The shootings started shortly after 5 p.m. in central Denver, where two women were killed and a man was injured, Chief Pazen said.

Shortly afterward, a man was fatally shot several blocks away, the chief said, and police officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect during a pursuit.

The same suspect then fled to the nearby city of Lakewood, Chief Pazen said.

Just before 6 p.m., the Lakewood Police Department received a report of shots fired at a business, John Romero, a spokesman for that department, told reporters during a joint news conference with Chief Pazen. A gunshot victim was later found and pronounced dead at the scene, Mr. Romero said, adding that police officers identified the car and the shooting suspect. They did not reveal his name.

When the officers found the car, the gunman opened fire, and officers shot back, Mr. Romero said. The gunman then fled on foot to a Hyatt hotel, where he is believed to have shot a clerk. He also shot and wounded a Lakewood police officer after he left the hotel.

The wounded officer was undergoing surgery, Mr. Romero said at the news conference. Paul Osckel, a spokesman for the Lakewood Police Department, said that he had no further information on the officer’s condition. The hotel clerk’s condition was not immediately clear as of Monday night.

Mr. Romero said the suspect was later shot in Lakewood and pronounced dead at the scene. It was not immediately clear if police officers had shot him.

Chief Pazen said that, based on preliminary information, the Denver Police Department believed that the same person was responsible for the shootings and the earlier shootout with the police.

A number of mass shootings have taken place in Colorado since two students at Columbine High School shocked the nation in 1999 by killing a teacher and 12 classmates. In March, a gunman killed 10 people at a Boulder grocery store, including a police officer. About two months later, a gunman opened fire at a birthday party in Colorado Springs, killing six people before taking his own life. And last month, six teenagers were wounded in a drive-by shooting at a park in the Denver suburb of Aurora.

The Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one with four or more people injured or killed, not including the perpetrator, has counted 687 such shootings in the United States this year.

Allegheny County Reports First Omicron Variant Cases

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The omicron variant has now been identified in Allegheny County.

As of Thursday, there are two known cases in the county. Both cases were detected in adult men, with one sample collected on Dec. 7 and the other sample collected on Dec. 13.

READ MORE:Pittsburgh Weather: Christmas Eve Rain Chances

Those samples were confirmed to be from the variant on Dec. 22 and Dec. 23.

Local doctors expect cases to rise significantly in the area.

“Knowing that it was already in the community in the middle of December and how fast it spreads and how contagious it is, we can pretty much assure that, knowing that it’s dominant already in the rest of America, it’s probably the dominant case that we’re seeing here,” said Brian Lamb, an internal medicine doctor at Allegheny Health Network.

On Wednesday, Allegheny County Health Director Dr. Debra Bogen said it was “only a matter of days” before the variant would be detected, especially since the health department found evidence of the variant in the county’s wastewater.

The confirmed cases come as the omicron variant has become the most dominant in the US, and cases from the variant have overtaken the Delta variant.
