Naftali Bennett was sworn in as Israel’s new prime minister on Sunday, after winning a confidence vote with the narrowest of margins, just 60 votes to 59. His victory ends a 12-year grip on power by former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving leader.
After four elections in two years, Bennett’s incoming government breaks a long political deadlock and ushers in the most diverse coalition Israel has ever seen, including the first Arab party to serve in the government. In his speech before the Knesset confidence vote, Bennett celebrated the diversity and warned of polarization within the country.“Twice in history, we have lost our national home precisely because the leaders of the generation were not able to sit with one and another and compromise. Each was right, yet with all their being right, they burnt the house down on top of us,” Bennett said. “I am proud of the ability to sit together with people with very different views from my own.”Bennett became the premier as the leader of Yamina, a right-wing party with only seven seats in Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, making him the only prime minister in the country’s history with such a small faction. By contrast, Netanyahu’s Likud party won 30 seats in March’s election. Once again, however, Netanyahu could not cobble together a governing coalition with a majority of the 120 members of Knesset.

Environmentalists emboldened by this week’s defeat of Keystone XL are pressuring President Joe Biden to revoke permits for other oil and gas pipelines, warning their votes depend on the administration blocking fossil fuel infrastructure.
“If you need and want us — as I know the Biden team does — to come out in stronger numbers for 2022, then you have to do right by our community,” Jane Kleeb, the president of Bold Alliance, who spent more than a decade battling TC Energy Corp.’s Keystone XL, said in a call with reporters Friday. “You have to stand up to these big oil and fracked-gas pipelines and say ‘no more.’”
Pipelines have been a focal point in the fight against climate change, putting leaders such as Biden and Canada’s Justin Trudeau in a tough spot as they pledge to help cut global carbon dioxide emissions at a Group of Seven summit in the U.K. The U.S. is the world’s biggest producer and consumer of oil, and it’s still unclear how plans to wean Americans off gasoline will pan out. Canada holds the world’s third-largest crude reserves and its economy benefits enormously from their development.

Pennsylvania hosts state’s 1st national mountain rescue conference at Seven Springs | TribLIVE.com
The national Mountain Rescue Association spring conference, in its 61st year, is making its first appearance in Pennsylvania this weekend — only its third venture east of the Mississippi River.
Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Somerset County welcomed about 200 guests from across the country and world for the three-day event, which featured helicopter demonstrations, ski-lift rescues, canine search sessions, educational speakers and the Search and Rescue Games, a series of field activities.
The all-volunteer Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, or AMRG, hosted the event alongside the MRA. The Pittsburgh-based group is the only accredited search and rescue team in Pennsylvania.

Unruly passenger on diverted Delta Air Lines flight identified as off-duty flight attendant
“This is the captain speaking,” a voice can be heard saying in footage of the incident. “We’d like all strong males to the front of the aircraft to handle a problem passenger.”
Delta Air Lines on Saturday identified an unruly passenger on a Friday night flight from Los Angeles to Atlanta as an off-duty flight attendant.
Cellphone video shows passengers on top of the person and reveals a voice on the plane’s public-address system: “This is the captain speaking. We’d like all strong males to the front of the aircraft to handle a problem passenger.”
The flight was diverted to Oklahoma City, and the FBI took the person into custody based on unknown allegations. The passenger’s name was not released.
FBI spokeswoman Megan Lauro would only say the FBI was investigating the incident.

Four people were rescued off a boat ‘teetering’ at the edge of a Texas dam, police say – CNN
(CNN)When police in Austin, Texas, responded to calls about a boat at the edge of Longhorn Dam earlier this week, they found it teetering over the edge — with four people aboard.
The group was rescued Thursday with the help of the Austin Police Department’s lake patrol unit and other first responders. But the situation could have been a lot worse if the officers hadn’t shown up so quickly, authorities said.“This would have been very tragic had they gone over the dam,” Austin Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Perry said in a Friday news conference. “It’s a very high dam and there would have been probably severe injuries if not loss of life due to that.”The group, which was visiting from out of town, was touring Lady Bird Lake on an electric boat Thursday afternoon and got close to the dam’s spillway, Perry said.They were distracted and didn’t notice the boat had passed two marked buoys notifying them to turn around, officer Bradley Smith, with the police department’s lake patrol unit, said during the news conference. Smith was one of three Austin lake patrol officers who were part of the rescue.”
By the time they realized they were almost at the dam, they tried to turn around to avoid it but the suction was too powerful and pulled them against the dam,” Smith said.

Chicago police officer arrested, charged for alleged role in Capitol riot
A officer with the Chicago Police Department was arrested and charged Friday for his alleged role in the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol, according to the city’s police chief.
Karol J. Chwiesiuk, a 29-year-old officer with the Chicago Police Department, was arrested by FBI and CPD officers around 8 a.m. local time and charged with five misdemeanors Friday afternoon, including knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building and violent entry or disorderly conduct at the Capitol, according to Chicago Police Superintendent David O. Brown.
Brown said Chwiesiuk was relieved of his police powers on June 2, as soon as federal authorities informed the department of their investigation.

A nonprofit affiliated with the late former President George H.W. Bush agreed to accept $5 million from a policy group at the center of China’s U.S. influence efforts, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: As tensions escalate between the U.S. and China, leaders with the George H.W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations have sounded off for closer ties — and while criticizing Beijing in some cases, have toed China’s line on some major geopolitical issues.
Driving the news: Axios obtained a written agreement that spells out the details of a $5 million grant from the China-United States Exchange Foundation to the Bush China Foundation, established in 2017 with the former president’s blessing.
- CUSEF leadership has close ties to Chinese government officials, and the group has a reputation as an arm of Bejing’s political influence operation. It provided a significant share of the funds for the Bush group’s efforts to improve Sino-American relations.

Coal plants in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio to shut down
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) —
The owner of three coal-fired power plants in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio said Thursday that it will shut them down.
Houston-based GenOn Holdings LLC said it will shut down a generating unit at both Avon Lake station on Lake Erie near Cleveland and Cheswick station on the Allegheny River outside Pittsburgh by Sept. 15.
It said it will shut down two generating units at the much larger Morgantown station on Maryland’s Cobb Neck peninsula by next June 1.Combined, the four coal-fired units can provide up to 2,421 megawatts.
In a statement, GenOn blamed “unfavorable economic conditions, higher costs including those associated with environmental compliance, an inability to compete with other generation types and evolving market rules that promote subsidized resources.
”Coal power has fallen out of favor in the climate change era amid a push for cleaner power sources that produce less pollution and greenhouse gases. U.S. coal production has been in steady decline, down by about one-third over the past decade.
Coal also has been buffeted by a flood of cheaper natural gas from shale formations, including the vast Marcellus Shale reservoir underneath Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.
Shutdown of the units is subject to a 90-day reliability review period by the regional electric grid operator PJM, GenOn said.

Keystone XL Pipeline Project Is Canceled – The New York Times
The embattled project to carry oil from Canada to Nebraska had been on life support since President Biden’s first day in office and stalled by legal battles for years before that.
The Canadian pipeline company that had long sought to build the Keystone XL pipeline announced Wednesday that it had terminated the embattled project, which would have carried petroleum from Canadian tar sands to Nebraska.
The announcement was the death knell for a project that had been on life support since President Biden’s first day in office and had been stalled by legal battles for years before that, despite support from the Trump administration.
On the day he was inaugurated, Mr. Biden, who has vowed to make tackling climate change a centerpiece of his administration, rescinded the construction permit for the pipeline, which developers had sought to build for over a decade. That same day, TC Energy, the company behind the project, said it was suspending work on the line.
On Wednesday, the company wrote in a statement that it “will continue to coordinate with regulators, stakeholders and Indigenous groups to meet its environmental and regulatory commitments and ensure a safe termination of and exit from the project.”

PORTLAND, Ore. — Defund the police? City leaders in Portland tried it. A unit in the fire and rescue bureau, one of the first of its kind in a major city, began this year taking some 911 calls about people in crisis, especially those who are homeless.
Instead of police officers with flashing lights and guns, a paramedic and a social worker would drive up offering water, a high-protein snack and, always and especially, conversation, aiming to defuse a situation that could otherwise lead to confrontation and violence. No power to arrest. No coercion.
“Having someone show up and offer you goods rather than run you off is different, and people respond to it — it softens the mood,” said Tremaine Clayton, a burly, tattooed veteran of 20 years at the fire and rescue bureau who helps run the program.
But this spring, just as the project was preparing for a major rollout into more neighborhoods, there was another plot twist: The new policing alternative was itself mostly defunded. The city decided on a go-slow approach, and the promised $4.8 million expansion evaporated.
Violent crime, especially homicide, has spiked in most urban areas during the pandemic, and many police departments are facing new scrutiny about training and bias since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis a year ago.

Pittsburgh Ranked #1 City For LGBTQ+ Home Buyers – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A new ranking lists Pittsburgh as the #1 city for LGBTQ+ home buyers.
According to Realtor.com, Pittsburgh ranks above a number of other major cities when comparing their levels of being gay-friendly as well as being affordable.
The criteria that went into ranking the cities included:
- a 100 ranking on the Human Rights Campaign’s annual Municipality Quality Index
- its own Pride celebration festival
- the median list price of homes for sale in May
Pittsburgh has received a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign for four years in a row.
The ranking of cities can be seen below:

- Madison, WI
- Bloomington, IN

Ashli Babbitt’s family seeks identity of officer who shot her in lawsuit | Fox News
The family of Ashli Babbitt, who was killed during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, is reportedly suing for the records and the identity of the Capitol Police officer who fatally shot her that day.
In April, the Justice Department announced it would not seek charges against the officer who shot Babbitt as she tried to climb headfirst through a broken window of a door that led to the Speaker’s Lobby outside of the House chamber.
The DOJ said the Metropolitan Police Department had “conducted a thorough investigation” of the incident.
The family is also suing for further video of the shooting, statements made by witnesses and other information gathered during the MPD’s investigation, according to CNBC.
The lawsuit filed in Washington, D.C. last week says the MPD has so far failed to comply with a Freedom of Information Act request deadline filed by her husband Aaron Babbitt days after the DOJ said the officer would not be charged. The lawsuit says the MPD neither handed over the information nor explained why it could not. The officer has not been identified by authorities.

“The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists, but because there was never agreement internationally, we never officially recognized it,” National Geographic Society Geographer Alex Tait said.
“It’s sort of geographic nerdiness in some ways,” Tait said. “We’ve always labeled it, but we labeled it slightly differently (than other oceans). This change was taking the last step and saying we want to recognize it because of its ecological separation.”

Hunter Biden called lawyer racial slurs in text messages – news.com.au
President Joe Biden’s son repeatedly used the n-word in a series of bizarre, lewd conversations with his white lawyer, according to newly published text messages.
The messages between Hunter Biden and corporate lawyer George Mesires, sent in late 2018 and early 2019, were obtained from Hunter’s abandoned laptop and published by The Daily Mail this week.
In one exchange in December 2018, Hunter asked the $A1090-per-hour lawyer how much money he owed him, adding “because n**** you better not be charging me Hennessy rates”.
“That made me snarf my coffee,” Mr Mesires replied.
“I just made that phrase up by the way,” Hunter continued. “I should have (had) your lineage.”
Mr Mesires said, “Apparently you do.”
Hunter wrote back, “That’s what I’m saying n****”
He then sent the lawyer a photo.
“Why are you so tan?” asked Mr Mesires.
“I’m sorry for sexting you accidentally that was meant for another friend named Georgia,” Hunter wrote.

Biden throws his clueless vice president under the bus – New York Post
Kamala Harris is playing a historic role in 2021: the nation’s first black, Asian, female vice president to serve as a sacrificial lamb.
Like many other women before her, Harris has been tasked with coming in late to clean up a mess made by her boss. Joe Biden probably wouldn’t do too well in a “Jeopardy!” contest, or even on a circle-a-word puzzle, but he’s smart enough to know that when you’ve got a problem you can’t solve, you should grandly announce a plan to deal with it by … fobbing it off on someone else.
Alas, unlike Barack Obama’s plan to cure cancer by announcing that Joe Biden would cure cancer (yes, that really happened), Biden’s buck-passing set up Harris for a spectacularly visible failure.
When friendly questioner Lester Holt pointed out to Harris that she hadn’t visited the border once, she pulled her trademark move (whenever she gets busted) of breaking into that famously weird dismissive laugh and replied, “And I haven’t been to Europe,” as though an equivalent problem is coming out of Europe. Hordes of damp Irishmen desperately washing up on the shores of Maine, perhaps.
The Biden administration created the border crisis with a “Yay, illegal immigrants” rhetorical style that was received in Latin America like an embossed invitation: “President Joe cordially invites you to El Norte.”
During the presidential campaign, Biden generously offered to suspend deportations and end family separations. In 2019, both Biden and Harris vowed to give health care to illegal immigrants, and two years before that, she insisted that “an undocumented immigrant is not a criminal.”
Biden was so intent on reversing everything President Donald Trump did that he moronically reversed one of Trump’s biggest successes: the “Remain in Mexico” program that required asylum-seekers to stay south of the border while their claims were being heard. Unsurprisingly, there was a record-setting run on the border, and suddenly there was a serious human cost to all of the knee-jerk anti-Trumpism.

Users on Twitter roasted Vice President Harris for passing out cookies made in her likeness to reporters on a plane while traveling to meet with the president of Guatemala.
The vice president traveled to the Central American country on Sunday to meet with the Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei in her first trip after being appointed by President Biden to lead diplomatic efforts in the region amid the border crisis.
In the tail section of Air Force 2, though, Harris handed out cookies in her likeness, made in the style of her official White House portrait.
USA Today politics reporter Courtney Subramanian shared a picture of the cookies online, which sparked backlash from users on Twitter.
GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel took a chop at Harris, saying the cookies were the “modern-day equivalent” of French Queen Marie Antoinette’s famous quote.
“Handing out cookies with her face on them as the border crisis rages…,” McDaniel wrote. “The modern-day equivalent of ‘let them eat cake.’”
Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa., lambasted Harris for passing out the cookies, saying that while she was doing that the cartel was making millions.

Computer glitch excludes Westmoreland write-in winners; other results certified | TribLIVE.com
Results from 14 Westmoreland County primaries were amended Monday to include additional winners after a weekend review of write-in votes identified discrepancies in how final totals were reported.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we wanted to review them,” said Election Bureau Director JoAnn Sebastiani.
Election officials said no additional votes were added to the results. A computer program that identified winners failed to include a handful of races where write-in candidates received enough votes to qualify for the November election.
Sebastiani said the glitch involved races where vacancies outnumbered candidates on the ballot.

Guatemala protesters tell Kamala Harris ‘Trump won’
Vice President Kamala Harris was greeted Monday by protesters in Guatemala telling her “Trump won” and “go home” — as the country’s president blamed President Biden for this year’s migrant crisis.
The rally was visible to Harris’ motorcade as she arrived to meet with Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei one day after he blamed the US for luring his constituents north.
“Kamala, Trump won,” read a large sign near the Central American country’s presidential palace.
“Kamala, Mind Your Own Business,” another sign said, according to a pool report.
Images posted to Twitter show other signs, including one that tells Biden’s migration czar: “Kamala, Go Home.”
Another large sign set up by activists features a doctored photo of a pregnant Harris.
The poster read, “Guatemala is pro-life #momalahelpme.” Harris does not have biological children.

Undercover agents raid Pittsburgh restaurant for second time within year – WPXI
PITTSBURGH — Pennsylvania State Police Liquor Control Enforcement agents raided a Strip District restaurant on Friday, saying the location was illegally selling alcohol without a liquor license.
The search warrant was executed on Savoy Sports Bar, on Penn Avenue in the Strip District after numerous complaints that the location was operating without a valid liquor license.
Undercover agents confirmed those illegal liquor sales, police said, and approximately 12.2 gallons of malt or brewed beverages and about 277 liters of liquor were seized. A state trooper and a liquor enforcement officer entered the club undercover and were told by a bartender that their $20 cover charge covered their drinks.
