Netflix and CNN woes show viewers may have had enough

LOS ANGELES — Thanks to Netflix and CNN, the entertainment industry has just received a masterclass into what works and what doesn’t when it comes to streaming.

  • Lesson One: Just creating a streaming channel, even one with a well-known name, is no guarantee of success. Viewers are showing their limits when it comes to paying for multiple services.
  • Lesson Two: The streaming market will continue to grow, but with so many players at this point, some will struggle to find a place with viewers.
  • Lesson Three: Content is still king. To succeed, a content channel needs to retain subscribers with original talked-about, exclusive shows, movies or specials, backed by a deep reserve of older, popular content that can be aired again and again to tide viewers over between hits.

Pittsburgh police searching for suspected porch pirate – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — Police are investigating after a Pittsburgh man was captured on home surveillance footage stealing packages off front porches and replacing them with empty boxes.

“He just dropped, swapped and dipped,” said Rose Nyland of Brookline.

Rose Nyland’s blood pressure skyrockets when she reviews her home surveillance video of a porch pirate in action.

Wearing a mask, gloves, and hooded sweatshirt, the suspect casually walks up to the front porch of her Woodbourne Avenue home with another box.

He then takes an empty package, swaps it out for the package that was just delivered, acts like he’s taking a picture of the fake delivery and then casually walks off.

“Tah dah! A whole lotta nothing. Some packing material!” said Nyland.

Nyland says he got away with clothes for her fiancé worth hundreds of dollars.

After he hit this neighborhood, he traveled to Dormont Avenue in Dormont and stole more packages.

Investigators told Channel 11 he then went to Overbrook and took off with items there.

Nyland says she’s furious, but she is hopeful police will find him soon with the series of neighborhood cameras out there and active social media groups reposting his image.

“Within seconds, somebody was like ‘ugh yeah this literally just happened in the Overbook group’ and then they sent screenshots,” said Nyland.

Pittsburgh Public Safety is encouraging residents to file reports if they have a package stolen.

More details emerge in Pittsburgh party shooting

Police were there just 90 minutes before the shooting started. At the party on Pittsburgh’s North Side where more than 200 people were gathered in an Airbnb rental, it was crowded and loud, witnesses said.

After the Easter morning shooting, Pittsburgh City Council members moved to try to rein in short-term rental properties like the one in East Allegheny.

The legislation, which will be introduced Tuesday, would require anyone operating an Airbnb or similar short-term rental unit to get a license from the city’s Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections. They will need to provide contact information where officials can get in touch with them if issues arise at the rental property, along with other information like the maximum number of guests permitted for each short-term rental.

Licenses would have to be renewed annually.

Property owners also would need to keep a log of guests who enter the property — including their names, addresses and phone numbers — which they would have to provide to city code enforcement officers, if they requested it.

“Currently, short-term rental properties aren’t regulated,” said Councilman Bobby Wilson, who represents the area where the shooting took place. “This provides us an avenue for us to require a license to operate one.”

Wilson is sponsoring the legislation with Councilwomen Theresa Kail-Smith and Deb Gross.

Matthew Steffy-Ross’ family speaks out after mass shooting on Pittsburgh’s North Side

Steffy-Ross was one of the two teenagers killed in Sunday’s mass shooting on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Steffy-Ross’ great-aunt, Bonnie McLain, said she talked to him just hours before the shooting happened.

“I said I will see you in the morning. That was the last time I spoke with him because when I got there the next morning, he wasn’t home, but I didn’t know why. I just didn’t know why. My neighbor came out, and she told me about it, about the mass shooting, I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach only because I hadn’t seen him. He wasn’t there,” McLain said.

Soon after, McLain learned her great-nephew had been shot and killed while attending a party.

On Tuesday, McLain wanted to focus on the good memories.

“Matthew was a fun, loving kid that cared so much about everybody. Matthew would give you the shirt off your back. He had a friend who really had no clothes much and he said to me, when he got paid, ‘I am going to get him some pants, Aunt Bonnie, because he doesn’t have any pants.’ That was this kid. The biggest smile in the world as you can see, if you look at any pictures of him, he cared about people and he loved people, and he acted upon it,” McLain said.

Steffy-Ross’ mentor, Lee Davis, said the 17-year-old was ready to launch a clothing line and wanted to surprise his great-aunt.

“The first T-shirt that was going to come off the line was going to go to his Aunt Bonnie. It was very important for him to have that T-shirt go to her because of how important she was to him in his life,” Davis said.

“He finally had a goal. He had something that he was interested in. He had something he had a passion for, and he helped bring it out in him,” McLain said.

Matthew’s cousin, Jeana McLain, became emotional when talking about that future.

Sweden Quran burnings: Dozens injured in riots – CNN

Federal Judge Strikes Down the Mask Mandate on Planes and Public Transit – The New York Times

WASHINGTON — A federal judge in Florida struck down the federal mask requirement on airplanes, trains, buses and other public transportation on Monday, less than a week after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had extended it through May 3.

In a 59-page decision, Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, an appointee of President Donald J. Trump, voided the mandate — which also applies to airports, train stations, and other transportation hubs — nationwide on several grounds, including that the agency had exceeded its legal authority under the Public Health Services Act of 1944. Because of the ruling, the masking order was not in effect for the time being, and the Transportation Security Administration would not enforce it, an administration official said on Monday evening.
