PITTSBURGH — Hundreds are gathered downtown at the City-County Building as Women’s March Pittsburgh rallies against the Supreme Court’s pending ruling on overturning Roe vs. Wade.

Police at the rally said they estimate there to be about a thousand people in attendance.

Small plane crashes into Florida bridge, killing one person and injuring 5, officials say – CNN

(CNN)A small plane crashed Saturday into the Haulover Inlet Bridge in Florida’s Miami-Dade County, killing one person and injuring five others, authorities said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement a single-engine Cessna aircraft flying from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport lost power and struck a vehicle on the bridge while landing.

The plane carrying a pilot and two passengers was traveling northbound and hit a SUV traveling southbound before catching fire, the Miami Dade Police Department said in a news release.

Once firefighters put out the flames, they discovered a deceased person inside the plane, the release said.

Two others in the plane were transported to area trauma centers and their conditions are unknown, police said.

A woman and two toddlers were inside the SUV and transported to a local hospital for medical evaluations.

Video taken from the balcony of a nearby hotel by Miami resident Alex Huberman showed the small, wrecked plane on fire, with dark smoke rising from it.

Several feet away from the plane was a maroon-colored SUV, which appeared to have sustained extensive damage, the video shows, suggesting it may be the vehicle the plane struck when attempting to land.

Huberman said he saw at least two people get out of the plane, adding several people were put on stretchers by emergency personnel.

Gunman kills 10 in live-streamed racial attack on New York state supermarket

BUFFALO, N.Y., May 14 (Reuters) – An 18-year-old white gunman shot 10 people to death and wounded three on Saturday at a grocery store in a Black neighborhood of upstate New York, before surrendering after what authorities called an act of “racially motivated violent extremism.”

Authorities said the suspect, who was armed with an assault-style rifle and appeared to have acted alone, drove to Buffalo from his home several hours away to launch the afternoon attack that he broadcast in real time on social media platform Twitch, a live video service owned by Amazon.com (AMZN.O)

Eleven of the 13 people struck by gunfire were Black, officials said. The two others were white. The racial breakdown of the dead was not made clear.

Court papers named the suspect as Payton Gendron of Conklin, a town of about 5,000 people in New York’s Southern Tier region near the Pennsylvania border.

He was arraigned hours after the shooting in state court on first-degree murder charges, which carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole, said Erie County District Attorney John Flynn. New York has no capital punishment.

Flynn said the judge also ordered Gendron to remain in custody without bail and to undergo a “forensic examination.” Gendron was scheduled to return to court on May 19.

SURRENDERED TO POLICE

Authorities said the teenager, reported by local media to have been a student at the State University of New York’s Broome Community College near Binghamton, had come close to taking his own life before he was arrested.

When confronted by officers at the store, the suspect held a gun to his own neck, but they talked him into dropping the weapon and surrendering, Buffalo police commissioner Joseph Gramaglia told a news briefing.

Friday the 13th, on the anniversary of the Rangers clinching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015, the Rangers headed back to Pittsburgh to attempt to stay alike another day and bring this serious back home to the Garden. The crowd not letting up at all with their chants of “IG – OR” that did seem to rattle the goalie in their last home games.

With Penguins captain Sidney Crosby out due to injury and Tyler Motte back in the lineup for the first time these playoffs, many looked at this as a glimmer of hope that the Rangers could muster enough to force a game 7. And they did just that.

The Penguins pulled the goalie in the third period, had a few chances, but Andrew Copp ultimately knocked in the empty net goal and the Rangers took a late 5-3 lead until the time ran out on the third period in Pittsburgh.

The Rangers will bring it back home for a seventh game in this series, coming back from being down three games to one.

Sunday night game moves to Madison Square Garden.

(CNN)Seventeen people were shot Friday night in downtown Milwaukee just hours after three were shot a few blocks away, near the arena where the Milwaukee Bucks were playing in the NBA Playoffs.

Ten people were taken into custody in the shooting downtown, and nine firearms were recovered, according to Milwaukee Police Capt. Warren Allen.

The 17 people shot ranged in age from 15 to 47, Allen said.

In the shooting near the arena, two men, 26 and 29, and a 16-year-old girl were wounded, according to Allen. All are expected to survive, he said.

“There was a 19-year-old male taken into custody in connection with this incident,” Allen said. “Charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.”

That incident occurred around 9:12 p.m. close to the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Highland Avenue, about a block from the Bucks’ home court at Fiserv Forum.

Police did not disclose the names of the people involved nor a possible motive.

Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Chief Darryl Jones was injured late Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision while responding to a fire in Edgebrook, according to a Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman.

The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at the intersection of Brookline Boulevard and Whited Street.

The fire was nearby at a home along the 900 block of Berkshire Avenue.

Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz reported Jones had lights and sirens activated when his SUV collided with a car.

The driver of the car sustained a head laceration but was not hospitalized, officials reported.

Jones told first responders he experienced some shoulder pain.

The chief was transported for a hospital to undergo drug testing as per policy for any employee driving a City of Pittsburgh vehicle.

Pa. governor hopeful drops out, backs rival as primary nears

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A Republican candidate for Pennsylvania governor said Thursday that he was ending his campaign and endorsing rival Lou Barletta, a move that comes as GOP leaders warn that leading candidate Doug Mastriano is too far right to win in a general election.

Jake Corman, Pennsylvania’s ranking state senator, announced his endorsement of Barletta at a news conference just days before the state’s Tuesday primary and amid hand-wringing by establishment Republicans that a Mastriano victory would doom their chances of flipping the governor’s mansion in November in the battleground state.

Corman’s name will remain on ballots statewide, and mail-in voting has been underway for weeks. It’s unclear what, if any, effect Corman’s decision to end his campaign will have on the race, since polls have showed him gaining little traction.

Large fire reported at saw mill in Indiana County

INDIANA COUNTY, Pa. —

A saw mill has caught fire in Indiana County, Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 has learned.

The blaze is happening at 1274 Brush Creek Road in Homer City. At least 10 fire departments are assisting to knock the fire down. There have been no reports of injuries.

Crosby missed all of the third period in Game 5

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby left the ice early during Game 5 against the New York Rangers after taking a hit in the head courtesy of defenseman Jacob Trouba. He missed most of the second period and all of the third period in the Penguins’ loss.

On Thursday, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan head coach announced that Crosby has been diagnosed with an upper-body injury. The Pittsburgh star’s status for Game 6 on Friday is unknown, but he will undergo further evaluation before then.

The incident happened with 10:45 left in the second period as Crosby had possession of the puck and three defenders close to him. Defenseman Jacob Trouba hit Crosby’s face with his left arm, which caused Crosby to fall. Instead of chasing the puck again, he skated toward the bench.

Federal law requires the Department of the Interior to stick to a five-year leasing plan for auctioning offshore leases. The administration had until the end of the current five-year plan — set to expire at the end of next month — to complete these lease sales.

North Korea confirms 1st COVID outbreak, Kim orders lockdown

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea imposed a nationwide lockdown Thursday to control its first acknowledged COVID-19 outbreak after holding for more than two years to a widely doubted claim of a perfect record keeping out the virus that has spread to nearly every place in the world.

The outbreak forced leader Kim Jong Un to wear a mask in public, likely for the first time since the start of the pandemic, but the scale of transmissions inside North Korea wasn’t immediately known. A failure to slow infections could have serious consequences because the country has a poor health care system and its 26 million people are believed to be mostly unvaccinated. Some experts say North Korea, by its rare admission of an outbreak, may be seeking outside aid.

However, hours after North Korea confirmed the outbreak, South Korea’s military said it detected the North had fired three suspected ballistic missiles toward the sea. It was its 16th round of missile launches this year, in brinkmanship aimed at forcing the United States to accept North Korea as a nuclear power and negotiate sanctions relief and other concessions from a position of strength.

PITTSBURGH — A man was shot and a woman was injured during a shooting in Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood.

Our crew on the scene saw police and crime scene tape around Seneca Street and Watson Street.

Our crew spoke with a witness who said he saw a man pull out a gun and shoot another man.

The witness said the shooter then held a gun up at him and he hit the deck as shots were fired toward him. He said he considers himself lucky to be alive.

Sanders will hold a rally at 1000 Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh to show support for candidate Summer Lee on May 12.

Doors to the rally will open at 3:30 p.m

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey will also attend the rally.

(CNN)Former Alabama corrections officer Vicky White has died from injuries after she and escaped inmate Casey White were arrested in Indiana earlier Monday, Sheriff Dave Wedding of Vanderburgh County told CNN.

She was hospitalized earlier with self-inflicted gunshot wounds after being taken into custody following a car chase in Evansville, Indiana, US Marshals previously told CNN. Her wounds were “very serious,” Wedding said at the time.

No law enforcement officers fired shots, according to Sheriff Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County, Alabama, where the pair — who are not related — fled on April 29.

Before the chase ensued, officers conducting surveillance spotted Vicky White exiting a hotel with a wig on, according to US Marshal Matt Keely. Then, she and Casey White got into a car and drove away.

Missing Alabama inmate, corrections officer in custody in Indiana after chase – CNN

(CNN)Escaped Alabama inmate Casey White and corrections officer Vicky White are in custody following a chase in Indiana, and she is hospitalized after shooting herself, authorities said late Monday afternoon.

The fugitives were taken into custody after a US Marshals task force member drove a vehicle into the Cadillac that Vicky White was driving in Evansville, ending the pair’s week and a half on the run, officials said.

US Marshals told CNN that Vicky White’s injury was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her wounds are “very serious,” said Sheriff Dave Wedding of Vanderburgh County, home to Evansville.

She is in “pretty serious shape,” he told reporters.

No law enforcement officers fired any shots, according to Sheriff Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County, Alabama, where the pair fled on April 29.

A tip from the public led to the capture and arrest, he said. The tip came Sunday night, Singleton said.
