“Usually I didn’t have to ask my friends for gas money, but now I ask for gas money if I take them anywhere because gas is really high,” said Alexa Belschener.

Pennsylvania stimulus: Wolf pushing for $2,000 checks to Pennsylvanians
Gov. Tom Wolf came to Pittsburgh Wednesday to discuss his proposed plan to give $2,000 in direct payments to Pennsylvanians using American Rescue Plan Act money.
Despite a $1.7 billion proposal by Wolf, his office said Pennsylvania is sitting on more than $2 billion in federal ARPA dollars that remain without a plan and uncommitted.
The money would have to be sent back to the federal government by Dec. 31, 2024.
In April, Wolf’s office said Democratic leaders in the Senate and House committed to introducing bills to support Wolf’s PA Opportunity Program.
The program uses $500 million in ARPA dollars to provide direct payments of up to $2,000 for Pennsylvania households with an income of $80,000 or less.
The program aims to help families still recovering economically from the COVID-19 pandemic or support them with covering pandemic-related costs and managing the current, everyday increasing cost of living.
“I’m talking about $2 billion that’s sitting in a checking account out in Harrisburg,” Wolf said at the West View Hub on Wednesday. “If we don’t use it by the end of 2024, we have to send it back to Washington.”

Gun reform rally demands Sen. Toomey support gun safety laws
PITTSBURGH —
A gun reform rally was held Tuesday afternoon outside of U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey’s office building in downtown Pittsburgh.
Several organizations including Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers, March for Our Lives, Cease Fire PA, Pittsburgh Public School teachers, parents and students came together to demand Toomey support gun safety legislation.
“Even though, as Americans, we disagree on many of these points we agree that action is needed. So let’s come together with Sen. Toomey and focus on what we can to get something done to save our kids,” said Parkland shooting survivor and co-founder of March for Our Lives, David Hogg. The rally is in light of recent violence across the city of Pittsburgh and the nation, including the mass shooting in Buffalo and the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting.
“The shooter in Buffalo was not a criminal mastermind, the shooter in Texas was not a criminal mastermind,” Hogg said. “These were barely adults, they were 18 and 19-year-olds who waited until they were old enough to buy an AR-15 legally and they did so. Stop arming the bad guys with guns.”
“People are afraid, people are angry that our children aren’t being protected,” said Nina Esposito-Visgitis, Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers president. “Our teachers do everything they can to protect our kids, our students mean everything to them. But some things can not protect our students unless, the laws are in place.”
