Rally calls for Allentown market’s closure after fatal shooting

Adan Market 2 has been the center of three fatal shootings since 2021.

After three deadly shootings in three years, including one over the past weekend, calls continued Saturday for a Pittsburgh market to close.

Dozens took to the streets in the Allentown neighborhood, sending a message to shut Adan Market 2 down.

“This business continues to be a nuisance problem,” said Pittsburgh Councilperson Bob Charland. “There’s mini-marts up and down the street here. This is the only one that continues to have problems.”

“It’s kind of like clockwork around here. There’s something that happens here, and somebody is killed. It’s either inside the store or outside of the store. It’s always something that starts inside and comes outside, and then things happen out here, and kids are killed,” said Abiding Missions executive director Jordan Shoenberger.

Both community residents and leaders shared the same sentiment over Adan Market 2 on East Warrington Avenue. The market has been the center of three fatal shootings since 2021. It’s unknown why this exact market has been the commonality, but Charland says he has his suspicions.

The Big Mac Was Born Near Pittsburgh

You can visit the Big Mac Museum — which includes a 14-by-12-foot statue of the sandwich — in North Huntingdon.

The fiberglass burger is a 14-by-12-foot tribute to two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame-seed bun.

The “meal disguised as a sandwich” was created by the late Michael James “Jim” Delligatti, a Pittsburgher who operated more than a dozen Mickey D’s in the area. It debuted in 1967 at the Uniontown location with a price tag of 45 cents and went nationwide the following year.

Highmark posts $533M profit in 2023, reversing dismal performance in 2022

After losing money in 2022, Pittsburgh’s Highmark Health rebounded last year.

The health insurance giant posted net income of $533 million even as it grappled with operating losses at its Pittsburgh-area hospitals.

That compares with a $346 million loss in 2022, due largely to struggling investments during a bear market, officials said Monday during a conference call on Highmark’s 2023 financial results.

Penguins remain in playoff contention by beating Red Wings

If the Penguins are going to salvage anything out of a 2023-24 regular season that supplied more aggravation than assurance, virtually all of their remaining games are “must-wins” with regard to their postseason aspirations. It’s been that way for more than a month (and probably a lot longer).

Sunday’s triumph lifted the Penguins’ record to a lukewarm 30-28-9 with 69 points. Hardly reason to start planning any parade routes but the general ineptitude of other contenders for the Eastern Conference’s final wild card seed has done more to keep the Penguins in contention than the Penguins themselves.

The Red Wings are the best of a bad bunch with a 34-28-6 record and 74 points.

Dog attacked by coyote in Mount Washington backyard

A small dog was attacked by a coyote in the city’s Mount Washington neighborhood, Pittsburgh Public Safety said in an alert Thursday.

The Jack Russell suffered injuries to its face during the incident, which happened Monday in a private backyard on William Street, a public safety spokesperson told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 in an email.

The coyote was scared off by the owners of the dog being attacked.

“It’s typical for coyotes to go after small dogs/cats when there are no people around and to be easily scared away by people with loud noise and arm waving — which was the case in this situation when the dog’s owners went into the backyard after hearing the attack,” Public Safety spokesperson Emily Bourne said in an email.

In the wake of the incident, Pittsburgh Animal Care & Control was reminding people to remove food sources and not leave pet food or unsecured garbage outside.
