Mayor Peduto responds to call to end traffic stops

A call for police departments in southwestern Pennsylvania to end traffic stops has gotten the attention of Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto.

In its quest to eliminate police shootings of unarmed Black men during “routine” traffic stops, the Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP) released a letter detailing 14 moving violations that police should bypass on patrol.

In the letter, those violations, operating with expired tags, running red lights, stop signs, speeding and not yielding for pedestrians.

Peduto says his administration is reviewing the letter.

“I think that there is probably a way to incorporate some of what he is talking about into policy and planning with police,” Peduto said.

However, Peduto stopped short of saying he endorses all demands listed in the BPEP letter.

“We look forward to working with B-PEP and the NAACP on reform in policing in Pittsburgh,” Peduto said.

Indonesia submarine: Navy searching for missing KRI Nanggala-402 – CNN

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)An unidentified object has been spotted at the site of the ongoing search for a missing Indonesian submarine with 53 crew members on board, as authorities warn oxygen on the vessel will run out within 24 hours.

An Indonesian naval vessel detected an object with “strong magnetic resonance” at a depth of 50 to 100 meters (164 to 328 feet), Maj. Gen. Achmad Riad, the head of the military’s central information unit, said during a press conference on Friday.
The Indonesian navy expects its warship, the Riguel, to reach the search area Friday morning local time, Riad added. The Riguel is equipped with a high-tech sonar, which uses sound waves to locate objects, and the navy is hopeful it will be able to find the KRI Nanggala-402, a German-made submarine which lost contact during a military exercise in the Bali Strait early morning Wednesday, local time.
Australia, Singapore and the United States are sending support in the search for the missing submarine, with Australia announcing in a press release Friday that it is sending two ships to the site.

Biden: This will be ‘decisive decade’ for tackling climate change – BBC News

President Joe Biden has told a major summit that we are in a “decisive decade” for tackling climate change.

The US has pledged to cut carbon emissions by 50-52% below 2005 levels by the year 2030.

This new target, which was unveiled at a virtual summit of 40 global leaders, essentially doubles their previous promise.

But the leaders of India and China, two of the world’s biggest emitters, made no new commitments.

Dershowitz: Maxine Waters used KKK tactics to intimidate Chauvin jury | TheHill

Attorney Alan Dershowitz compared statements made by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) during the Derek Chauvin trial to tactics used by the Ku Klux Klan to intimidate jury pools in the 1920s and ’30s.

“Her message was clearly intended to get to the jury,” Dershowitz said this week during an appearance on Newsmax. “‘If you acquit or you find the charge anything less than murder, we will burn down your buildings, we will burn down your businesses, we will attack you.'”

Waters told a group of protesters and journalists in Brooklyn Center, Minn., on Saturday that “we’ve got to get more confrontational” when advocating for police reforms, a remark partisan critics and conservatives pounced on, saying they interpreted it to be an endorsement of political violence.

Senate overwhelmingly passes anti-Asian hate crimes bill – CNNPolitics

(CNN)The Senate passed with a wide bipartisan majority Thursday a bill denouncing discrimination against Asian communities in the United States, and creating a new position at the Justice Department to expedite reviews of potential Covid-19-related hate crimes.

The vote was 94-1. The lone vote in opposition was from Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley.
The bill would also direct the departments of Justice and Health and Human Services to issue guidance raising awareness of hate crimes during the pandemic, and work with agencies to establish online reporting of them. It now goes to the House before being signed into law by President Joe Biden.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday that the bill is “proof” that “the Senate can work to solve important issues,” and would tell bigots “we’re going after you.”

Video shows teen struggling for gun before being shot by cops

Dramatic bodycam footage shows police shooting dead a Tennessee teen in his high school bathroom as he grabs a gun while resisting arrest — as officials announced that none of the officers will be charged.

Anthony J. Thompson Jr., 17, was sitting in a bathroom stall in Knoxville’s Austin-East Magnet High School when officers came in to arrest him on April 12 after his ex-girlfriend’s mom lodged a formal complaint of domestic abuse.

As he was told to put his hands behind his back to be cuffed, the teen suddenly struggled as he reached for a handgun in his hoodie — with it discharging during the struggle.

Officer Jonathon Clabough saw the gun “with Anthony Thompson’s hand” on the butt and “thinks, ‘I’m about to die,’” Knox County District Attorney General Charme Allen said while releasing the footage during a two-hour press conference Wednesday.

House Democrats Pass Bill To Make D.C. The 51st State

The U.S. House of Representatives has once again voted on a bill to grant statehood to Washington, D.C., and enfranchise more than 712,000 Americans, a cause that enjoys unprecedented support but still faces an uphill battle in the U.S. Senate.

“This country was founded on the principles of no taxation without representation and consent of the governed. But D.C. residents are taxed without representation and cannot consent to the laws under which they as American citizens must live,” said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.’s non-voting delegate, on the House floor ahead of the vote.

Her statehood bill, H.R. 51, would reduce the size of the federal district and create a new state with the remaining territory with two U.S. senators and a representative, placing residents on equal footing with voters in other states. Statehood advocates contend the cause is also a fight for racial justice. If admitted, D.C. would be the first state with a plurality of Black residents.

Psaki cuts off reporter when pressed on Biden’s ‘racism’ culpability

Biden described the US as systemically racist in an address to the nation Tuesday night after the Chauvin verdict.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tersely cut off a line of questioning Wednesday when The Post pressed her on criticism that President Biden is himself guilty of feeding into what he’s decried as ‘”systemic racism” in the United States.

In light of Biden’s comments after ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdicts for murdering George Floyd, The Post asked Psaki at her daily press briefing about Biden’s own role in establishing federal laws in the 1980s and ’90s that disproportionately jailed minorities.

“Well, I would say that the president’s — one of the president’s core objectives is addressing racial injustice in this country, not just through his rhetoric, but through his actions,” Psaki said.

“And what anyone should look to is his advocacy for passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, for nominating leaders to the Department of Justice to address long-outdated policies and to ask his leadership team here in the White House to prioritize these issues in his presidency, which is current and today and not from 30 years ago.”

Pressed further on whether Biden believes that “it’s important to accept his own culpability for setting up the system,” Psaki replied: “I think I’ve answered your question” and moved on to another reporter

Minimize Police Interactions With The Public –  DickMorris.com

The case of Duane Wright is an illustration of what over-enforcement of the laws can lead to. Wright, a 20-year-old black man, was killed after he was stopped on a highway for an expired driver’s license and for having an air freshener dangling from his rearview mirror.

It was totally unnecessary to pull Wright over. In London, they use ubiquitous cameras to see who is driving and, with computers, to determine if they have a valid license. Those whose licenses have expired receive summonses in the mail and if necessary personal visits in their home. What is the reason, in this over-wrought racial situation, to send police to stop cars and confront unlicensed drivers?

Columbus police officer fatally shoots girl swinging knife

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Columbus police shot and killed a teenage girl who swung at two other people with a knife Tuesday, according to bodycam footage from the officer who fired the shots just minutes before the verdict in George Floyd’s killing was read.

Officials with the Columbus Division of Police showed a segment of the footage Tuesday night just hours after the shooting took place in a neighborhood on the city’s east side. The decision to swiftly release the video was a departure from protocol as the force faces immense scrutiny from the public following a series of recent high-profile police killings that have led to clashes.

The 10-second clip begins with the officer getting out of his car at a house where police had been dispatched after someone called 911 saying they were being physically threatened, Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said at the news conference. The officer takes a few steps toward a group of people in the driveway when the girl, who was Black, starts swinging a knife wildly at another girl or woman, who falls backward. The officer shouts several times to get down.

The girl with the knife then charges at another girl or woman who is pinned against a car.

From a few feet away, with people on either side of him, the officer fires four shots, and the teen slumps to the ground. A black-handled blade similar to a kitchen knife or steak knife lies on the sidewalk next to her.

A man immediately yells at the officer, “You didn’t have to shoot her! She’s just a kid, man!”

The officer responds, “She had a knife. She just went at her.”

The race of the officer wasn’t clear.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. It remains unclear if anyone else was injured.

Police did not identify the girl or her age Tuesday. One family member said she was 15, while another said she was 16.

The shooting happened minutes before the verdict in the killing of George Floyd was announced.

Russian President Putin state of the nation as Navalny protests ahead

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to address the nation on Wednesday in his annual “State of the Nation” address, a speech that will take place amid growing tensions with Ukraine and a hunger strike by dissident Alexei Navalny.

In the last week, there have been further reports that Russian troops are massing at the border with Ukraine, potentially preparing for military action.

Navalny, on hunger strike in a Russian prison, has become dangerously ill and has been moved to a prison hospital. The news prompted warnings from the U.S. that there would be “consequences” if Russia allows Navalny to die in jail.

Monroeville woman, 64, sues restaurant, police after arrest over wrong food order | TribLIVE.com

A Monroeville woman is suing a police officer and a Panda Express restaurant, alleging she was arrested for complaining that she got the wrong meal.

According to the lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court, Diana Broadnax, 64, went to the Panda Express on William Penn Highway in Monroeville on May 5, 2019, to place a take-out order.

When she got home, she realized she had gotten the wrong order, the lawsuit said. She immediately went back to the restaurant to exchange it.

According to the complaint, the manager, who is described as a white woman, responded angrily, yelled at Broadnax, who is Black, and threatened to call the police.

The manager did call the Monroeville police, complaining that Broadnax had been disorderly and was drunk.

“Plaintiff was not intoxicated, had not consumed any alcohol, was not disorderly, and since it was Sunday, her only activity before going to the Panda Express, was to attend church services,” the lawsuit said.

It continued that Broadnax had not engaged in any physical or verbal activity that justified the manager’s behavior or her calling the police.

Biden selects first woman four-star admiral for the Coast Guard

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has nominated Coast Guard Vice Adm. Linda Fagan to the role of vice commandant, making her the first woman to achieve a fourth-star in the service.

Fagan, the head of the Coast Guard’s Pacific area of operations, would replace Adm. Charles Ray, who has been the Coast Guard’s No. 2 officer since May 2018. Defense News first reported the nomination early Monday.

According to her biography, Fagan has served on all seven continents. She previously held command roles along the east coast, and also served as deputy director of operations for Headquarters at U.S. Northern Command.

“I am pleased that President Biden has nominated Vice Admiral Linda Fagan to be the Vice Commandant of the United States Coast Guard,” Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. “She is a superb leader who, as the 32nd Vice Commandant, will guide the Coast Guard at a time when its mission of securing our maritime borders, ports, and waterways has never been more important.

“If confirmed, Vice Admiral Fagan would serve as the first woman to be promoted to a 4-star rank in the Coast Guard.  We are grateful to Vice Admiral Fagan for continuing her service to country, for the trail she has blazed, and for inspiring us all.”

Op-Ed: Vaccine Passports Could Easily Bring China’s Social Credit System to America

‘We quickly enter the world of Silicon Valley and Big Tech when we talk about the passport being used for exclusive purposes.’

The exclusive use of vaccine passports is limited only by the imagination of the governments and companies working in concert to put them together.

A piece this month in Wired suggested that vaccine passports could be used to deny access to schools, jobs and even potentially credit. China already uses a social credit system that a vaccine passport program in the United States could easily become in a practical sense.

Biden Administration Considering Rule to Cut Nicotine in Cigarettes – WSJ

The Biden administration is considering requiring tobacco companies to lower the nicotine in all cigarettes sold in the U.S. to levels at which they are no longer addictive, according to people familiar with the matter.

Administration officials are considering the policy as they approach a deadline for declaring the administration’s intentions on another tobacco question: whether or not to ban menthol cigarettes.

The Food and Drug Administration must respond in court by April 29 to a citizens’ petition to ban menthols by disclosing whether the agency intends to pursue such a policy. The Biden administration is weighing whether to move forward on a menthol ban or a nicotine reduction in all cigarettes—or both, the people familiar with the matter said.

The White House and the FDA didn’t immediately comment Monday.
