Trump Plans to Sign Executive Order to Prevent Meat Shortage – The New York Times

WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Tuesday that he would declare meat processing plants “critical infrastructure” to ensure that facilities around the country remained open as the government tried to prevent looming shortages of pork, chicken and other products as a result of the coronavirus.

The action comes as meat plants around the country have turned into coronavirus hot spots, sickening thousands of workers, and after the head of Tyson Foods, one of the country’s largest processors, warned that millions of pounds of meat would simply disappear from the supply chain.

While Mr. Trump said the step would ensure an ample supply of meat, the announcement provoked swift backlash from unions and labor advocates, who said the administration needed to do more to protect workers who often stand shoulder to shoulder in refrigerated assembly lines. At least 20 workers have already died of coronavirus, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union said.

Georgia Restaurants Opened Their Doors Today—Here’s How It Went

Georgia is one of the first states in the country to significantly ease social distancing restrictions.

“A lot of people, I think, want to get back to the new normal, which will be social distancing and all that,” Chris Heithaus, manager of 87 Waffle House restaurants in Georgia and the Carolinas, told the Associated Pressadding, “But they will be able to eat inside the restaurant.”

The majority of restaurants did not reopen but a few—including Waffle House’s 330  chain restaurants and more than twelve other restaurants in the Atlanta metro area—did, despite backlash from health officials and users online; “This is a really bad idea—I hope you are paying your workers extra and protect them,” said one user in response to a post on Instagram from Rocky Mountain Pizza announcing their reopening.

For those that did reopen, though, it wasn’t life as normal: Restaurants are required to adhere to a set of 39 guidelines laid out by the state government, including a mandate that all employees wear masks, owners screen employees for signs of illness, and restrictions on the amount of customers allowed inside at the same time.

Many owners that refused to allow dine-in service did so because they felt it was too early or unsafe, while others said they were waiting for more guidance from the state.

Gardening growing as a hobby during the coronavirus pandemic | WJAC

Everyone is trying to find creative ways to stay busy while staying home as the statewide shutdown continues because of the coronavirus.

One hobby seems to be budding in popularity, gardening. Local nursery owners say more people have been paying them a visit to get their gardens going.

Jesse Stuver, the owner of Stuver’s Riverside Nursery in Johnstown, says this time have made people want to become more self sufficient and grow their own food instead of relying on the store.

“It’s a good opportunity to put food on your plate and there’s nothing like the taste of a tomato or apple pie that you’ve grown the tree yourself or the plant yourself,” said Stuver.

“You get to see thing that you’re obviously not going to see in an office and it’s kind of nice to stop and smell the roses sometimes, I think that’s important,” said Stuver.

Even though people won’t be working from home or unable to see friends and family forever. Stuver says he believes this trend will continue past this time.

“When people do go back to work I think they’re going to have a little more time, I think it’s been a reset button for people. They’re spending more time with family and gardening is a family thing, you can get the kids out and they can help till the garden, help pull weeds and whatever needs to be done,” said Stuver.

And if you are looking to get a green thumb during the pandemic, Stuver says to make sure you have fertile soil and keep weeds away from your garden. But most importantly, he says to have fun with it.

Tyson Foods warns that “the food supply chain is breaking’ as plants close – CNN

New York (CNN Business)Tyson Foods (TSN) is warning that “millions of pounds of meat” will disappear from the supply chain as the coronavirus pandemic pushes food processing plants to close, leading to product shortages in grocery stores across the country.

“The food supply chain is breaking,” wrote board chairman John Tyson in a full-page advertisement published Sunday in The New York Times, Washington Post and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
US farmers don’t have anywhere to sell their livestock, he said, adding that “millions of animals — chickens, pigs and cattle — will be depopulated because of the closure of our processing facilities.”
“There will be limited supply of our products available in grocery stores until we are able to reopen our facilities that are currently closed,” Tyson wrote.

(CNN)Chipotle Mexican Grill has agreed to pay a record $25 million fine to resolve criminal charges involving food-safety violations, the Justice Department said.

The fine is the largest “ever imposed in a food-safety case,” the department said.
“Chipotle failed to ensure that its employees both understood and complied with its food safety protocols, resulting in hundreds of customers across the country getting sick,” said United States Attorney Nick Hanna.

Pittsburgh area restaurants offering Easter meals to go

Easter has changed for many people this year. Most of us will be having an intimate Easter at home.

Luma, in Mount Lebanon, is one of several offering Easter meals to go, and still accepting orders.

“We’d like to get all the orders by Saturday at the latest, so that we can prepare,” owner Greg Ackerman said.

Ackerman is offering his fine dining menu for Easter, which includes filet, salmon oscar, short ribs and other options.

“We’re seeing individual orders, we are seeing orders for two people,” Ackerman said. “It hurts your heart because you feel for that grandmother who is not gonna be able to see her grandchildren or her children for Easter. But, we’re happy that we are able to provide at least some sense of Easter dinner.”

DiAnoia’s Eatery, in the Strip District, has sold out of their Easter meals.

“We sold over 450 of them,” owner Aimee DiAndrea Anoia said.

DiAndrea Anoia said they are still offering their homemade pasta boxes, which include fresh bread and wine.

Both DiAndrea Anoia and Ackerman agree that they are able to continue serving, and offering Easter, due to the generosity of their customers.

“They’ve really been good to us,” said Ackerman “That’s what’s keeping us afloat, it’s a tough time, but it’s a tough time for everyone.”

Pittsburgh food bank president worries about supply running out | TribLIVE.com

Lisa Scales has worked in food banks for nearly 25 years. She was involved in food distribution efforts in response to Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and to the 9/11 attacks in New York.

She has never experienced anything like the need associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

“I have never seen a spike in need to this degree,” said Scales, president and CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. “I have never seen need like we’ve seen in the past several weeks in the Pittsburgh region and frankly across the country.”

Scales is facing a harsh reality that the current need for food is greater than the food bank’s supply can meet.

So far, the food bank has held four large-scale, drive-up distributions and served boxes of food to over 5,000 cars. It has more distributions planned and is developing other methods of getting food into the community. But Scales believes that in the midst of the covid-19 crisis, the food bank has met its match.

“It’s hard for me to say this, but the need is so significant that, despite our best efforts, I know that we will not be able to meet all of the need that’s in the community throughout the entirety of the crisis,” Scales said.

Chicken is often the culprit in U.S. food poisoning cases, according to CDC report

The CDC says that the increases could be the result of new diagnostic tools that help identify more cases.

As recent illnesses tied to raw turkeyground beefcut melon and romaine lettuce suggest, U.S. food poisoning cases don’t appear to be going away anytime soon.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report Thursday that the frequency of several types of food poisoning infections climbed last year, but that the increases could be the result of new diagnostic tools that help identify more cases.

Overall, the agency believes food poisoning rates have remained largely unchanged
