11 Gold Miners Rescued In China After 2 Weeks Trapped Below Ground : NPR

Eleven miners have been rescued in China after a harrowing two weeks trapped some 2,000 feet below ground.

The rescue marked a moment of celebration and relief in what has been an arduous and complex effort to bring the men to safety. One miner has already died and another 10 remain missing.

The first miner was rescued shortly after 11 a.m. local time on Sunday. Television footage showed rescuers clapping and cheering as the miner was brought to the surface wearing a blindfold to protect his eyes from the light. He was brought to the hospital for treatment, with his condition described as “extremely weak.” Several other miners were seen walking on their own with the help of rescuers before being taken to the hospital.

Indianapolis shooting: Five people including a pregnant woman killed in city’s ‘largest mass casualty shooting’ in more than a decade – CNN

(CNN)Five people and an unborn child were killed Sunday after an early-morning shooting in Indianapolis’ northeast side, police said — an incident the mayor called “a mass murder.”

A juvenile was also in critical condition after being shot in the incident, which marks Indianapolis’ “largest mass casualty shooting in more than a decade,” according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Randal Taylor.
IMPD police officers responded to a report of a person shot just before 4 a.m. Upon arrival, police came across “a juvenile male with apparent gunshot wounds,” IMPD spokesman Shane Foley told reporters.

Officers then received information that led them to another residence less than a block away, where they found five people — including a pregnant woman — dead with “apparent gunshot wounds,” Foley said.”

Despite the best lifesaving efforts provided by medical staff, both the female and the unborn child did not survive,” he added. “The juvenile male that was shot is expected to survive his injuries.”

Marion County chief deputy coroner Alfarena McGinty identified the victims as Kezzie Childs, 42; Raymond Childs, 42; Elijah Childs, 18; Rita Childs, 13; Kiara Hawkins, 19; and Hawkins’ baby.

While IMPD’s investigation is in its early stages, Foley said the multiple shooting “does not appear to be a random act.”

As of Sunday afternoon, police said they did not have any named suspects related to the shootings, but that they believed more than one shooter could have been involved.

Bombing at California Church Known for Its Anti-L.G.B.T.Q. Views – The New York Times

The F.B.I. and local authorities are investigating a bombing on Saturday morning at a church in Los Angeles County that had recently been the target of protests for its extremist views against L.G.B.T.Q. people, women and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The police responded to reports of an explosion at the church, First Works Baptist Church, in El Monte, Calif., just after 1 a.m. on Saturday.

An “improvised explosive device” was found to be the source of the attack, said Chief David Reynoso of the Police Department in El Monte, which is about 13 miles east of Los Angeles. Officials would not elaborate on what they found.

No one was in the church at the time, and no injuries were reported. The authorities found obscenities and the words “get out” spray-painted on the front of the church, Chief Reynoso said.

Nashville bombing suspect may have been killed in blast, sources say – CBS News

Law enforcement sources told CBS News the suspect in the Nashville explosion on Christmas Day may have been killed in the blast. DNA tests are being conducted on the human remains found at the scene.

Warner, a Nashville area resident, had a similar make and model RV as the one in photos released to the public. Warner was described as a 63-year-old White man.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Doug Korneski said Saturday there is no indication of additional explosive threats. He said officials had received about 500 tips and are “not working on any assumptions.

“Police responded to a call of shots fired early Friday near the AT&T building in downtown Nashville. Instead, they found an RV with clothes and blinds covering the windows. Shortly afterward, the warning of an imminent bomb started blaring and an explosion rocked the area at about 6:30 a.m.

Shell casings have been found at the scene, but the ammunition related to them is believed to have been set off by the large explosion. The scene is very large, and authorities said they are beginning at the “outermost” perimeter of the blast and working their way in.

There is video of the RV in downtown Nashville. Investigators have a Google Maps photo of the address of the person of interest that shows a similar looking camper in the yard. Google Maps says the picture was taken in May 2019.

2 kids die, 2 injured in Detroit fire; mom jumps from window | WFLA

DETROIT (AP) — Fire department officials say a Christmas morning fire killed a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old at a home on Detroit’s east side and forced their mother to jump from a second-floor window to escape holding her 3-year-old in her arms.

Two other children who survived, an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old, were badly burned.

A deputy fire commissioner, David Fornell, called the fire “a Christmas tragedy.” Fornell said the mother and the 3-year-old were not seriously injured. He said later Friday that the 8-year-old and 10-year-old appeared to have escaped from the first floor.

Earlier reports cited officials as saying they may also have jumped from the upper floor.

Fornell also confirmed the woman was the mother of all five children.

A timeline of the Nashville RV explosion on Christmas morning – CNN

The explosion that rattled a historic Nashville street in the predawn hours of Christmas Day came after an RV repeatedly warned of an imminent explosion.

A boxy white RV arrived at 2nd Avenue North in downtown Nashville at 1:22 a.m. CT on Friday, police said.
Several hours later, Betsy Williams said she was woken up by what sounded like rapid gunfire.
“It sounded like an automatic weapon,” she said, saying it was “disconcerting.”
About 5-10 minutes later, she heard the sound again, so she called 911. Minutes later, she heard the gunfire a third time, so she called 911 again.
Buck McCoy said he, too, was woken up by what he thought were gunshots. He got up and looked out the window, he said, but went back to bed when he didn’t see anything.
Police said they were called to the location after a report of shots fired around 5:30 a.m.
Police responding to the scene found a white RV parked in front of an AT&T transmission building at 166 2nd Avenue North, a historic street in downtown Nashville.
The RV was repeatedly broadcasting a message warning of an explosion set to occur in 15 minutes, police said.
“Evacuate now,” the computerized, female voice coming from the vehicle said, according to Williams.
“This vehicle will explode in 15 minutes,” the voice said, according to Williams. After repeating that message for a minute, the voice then said the vehicle will explode in 14 minutes. The countdown was on.
“When the time started, that’s when we went, ‘oh sh*t,'” she said. “We need to get out of here.”
Six uniformed police officers heard the message and immediately began knocking on doors and evacuating residents.
Williams, still in her pajamas, and her family grabbed their cat and made their way to their car to leave the immediate area. She said she saw police cordon off 2nd Avenue to prevent anyone from going down it.
David Malloy was out walking his dog, a black German shepherd named DJ, when he noticed police cars on every corner.
Then he heard a voice that he thought was coming from a police car telling people to “evacuate” and “please stand back.”
As the countdown grew closer to its end, the message emanating from the RV changed, according to surveillance video taken from a building across the street.
“If you can hear this message, evacuate now,” the voice said at about 6:30 a.m. “If you can hear this message, evacuate now.”
Then a bang and a blinding flash.
Malloy, with his dog, said he asked an officer whether they were supposed to evacuate when he saw the explosion.
“It was just this huge fireball explosion,” he said. “I didn’t know what to make of it.”
Williams and her family saw the explosive fireball as they were driving down 2nd Avenue, she said.
“Everything just, I mean, everything shook. It was quite the blast,” she said.
When Buck McCoy looked outside, he saw trees down everywhere and broken glass littering the street.
“Everything on the street was fire,” he said. “There were three cars that were fully engulfed.”

Massive Snowstorm Hits Japan, Trapping More Than 1,000 Cars On A Highway : NPR

It started with a large vehicle that got stuck in the deepening snow. That minor incident grew into a monster snow-covered traffic jam as more than 1,000 cars became stranded on a highway that runs between Tokyo and the city of Niigata along the Sea of Japan coast.

The snarl began Wednesday night, local news sources reported.

“The snow was extremely heavy,” one driver told the public broadcaster NHK. “As time went by, the cars got buried. I was really scared. I’ve eaten all of my food and drinks. Now, to drink water, I have to melt snow I collect in a plastic bottle.”

Heavy snowfall in recent days, especially in the Niigata and Gunma prefectures, blanketed some areas with more than 6 feet of snow. NHK reported that these prefectures have seen seven times more snow than they typically do at this point at this time of year.プレス.png

“I hardly slept, and I was worried because I had absolutely no information (about the situation),” a 48-year-old man, who had been driving to his home near Tokyo, told Kyodo News.

For a time, traffic was stopped in both directions. Lanes bound for Niigata were cleared by Friday morning, while about 260 vehicles on the Tokyo-bound lanes were still stuck as of 7 p.m. local time Friday, Kyodo reported.

The East Nippon Expressway Co. said it could be Saturday before all the cars are cleared.

Photos show deadly 66-car pile-up in PA during snowstorm

Shocking photos show what happened when a dozen tractor-trailers skidded out of control on snow-covered Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania during Wednesday night’s winter storm — killing one person

The 66-vehicle pileup, including 55 trucks and 11 passenger vehicles, over a mile span on the westbound side of the highway happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday in Clinton County, State Police said Thursday.

The stretch remained closed Thursday afternoon with contractors trying to clear the vehicles, according to cops.

A second passenger died during the incident due to a medical issue, but it was not connected to the crash, cops said.

The fatality was one of five lives claimed during Winter Storm Gail, the first snowstorm of the season — which dumped more snow on New York City than all of last year combined.

Another death was reported just outside Pittsburgh when a man was hit by a plow around 4:45 p.m. while walking with a snowblower, according to the local CBS station.

Carbon Monoxide Leak Leaves 18 Dead At China Coal Mine : NPR

At least 18 people have been confirmed dead following a carbon monoxide leak inside a coal mine in southwest China, the nation’s Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

Those killed in the leak were among 24 people who got trapped in the mine around 5 p.m. local time on Friday when “excessive levels of carbon monoxide” began to seep into the air, according to the state news agency. One person has been pulled from the mine and rescue efforts remain underway to save five others still inside.

The accident occurred at the Diaoshuidong coal mine in the city of Chongqing. The mine had been suspended and shut down two months ago, and at the time of the accident workers were inside to dismantle equipment. Investigators were working to determine the cause of the accident, according to Xinhua.

The Diaoshuidong mine was built in 1975 and since 1998 has been operated as a private enterprise with an annual capacity of roughly 120,000 tons of coal. In 2013, three people died at the mine following a hydrogen sulfide poisoning incident, according to Reuters.

Friday’s accident appeared an eerily similar replay to a September accident at the Songzao coal mine, which is also in Chongqing. At least 16 workers were killed after exposure to unsafe levels of carbon monoxide.

China, which is both the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal, has now reported more than 100 coal mining accidents in 2020. In November, the government launched a year-long review of all working coal mines and coal-mining projects, focusing on infrastructure, risk prevention management and capabilities for emergency response and rescue.
