Pittsburgh Public School board hires consultant to analyze student arrest data – Pittsburgh Current

The Pittsburgh Public Schools board has embarked on a focus on student arrests and involvement with the juvenile justice system by hiring a consultant to disaggregate its data on police calls for service, arrests and citations involving district students.

From the 2015-2016 school year through the 2019-2020 school year, Pittsburgh students were arrested by school police more than 2,500 times and a recent report by Black Girls Equity Alliance identified the district as the largest source of referrals for black girls in the county.

The board hired RMC Research Corporation at its legislative meeting Wednesday, at a cost of $17,000, to disaggregate the police data by year and student characteristics including gender, grade, age, race, Individualized Education Plan status and English language status. It will also identify the location, officer and offense category.

Stolen Mao Zedong scroll ‘worth millions’ found cut in half – BBC News

A stolen calligraphy scroll said to be worth millions has been found in Hong Kong, after it was cut in half.

Thieves had stolen the scroll by Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong from an art collector’s home in a burglary last month.

They then sold it at a fraction of its value. It was apparently cut up as the 2.8m-long (9ft) scroll was deemed too long to display, said Hong Kong police.

The original owner says the artwork’s value has been “definitely affected”.

The scroll contains stanzas of poetry handwritten by the founder of the People’s Republic of China. Its owner has claimed it is estimated to be worth around $300m (£230m), though it is not known how the valuation was obtained.

Protesters March Against Decision Not To Charge Officer In Wauwatosa, Wis., Death : NPR

Demonstrators marched in Wauwatosa, Wis., Wednesday night to protest the decision not to charge a police officer in the killing of a Black 17-year-old youth in February.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah acted in self-defense by shooting Alvin Cole after police responded to a disturbance at a shopping mall. In a 14-page letter addressed to Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber, Chisholm presented details of the investigation into the incident and the reasons for his decision not to charge Mensah.

Chisholm said the investigation found that Cole had a stolen 9mm pistol which he displayed at the Mayfair Mall during an argument with another person. Chisholm said when police arrived and encountered Cole in the parking lot, he ran from officers, discharged the gun, refused to surrender it and was then fired on by Mensah.

“In this case,” concluded Chisholm, “there is sufficient evidence that Officer Mensah had an actual subjective belief that deadly force was necessary and that belief was objectively reasonable. I do not believe that the State could disprove self-defense or defense of others in this case and therefore could not meet the burden required to charge Officer Mensah.”
