Man With 6 Firearms Arrested At Grocery Store Following Tip From ‘Startled’ Shopper : NPR

A 22 year-old man armed with multiple guns was arrested on Wednesday in Atlanta after a shopper overheard him loading weapons in a grocery store bathroom.

Charles Russell was entering the restroom in a Publix supermarket when he heard “clicking sounds” coming from a bathroom stall, according to a police incident report. Then he saw an AR-15-style rifle leaning against the wall.

Russell, who works as a shopper for the grocery delivery service Instacart, rushed to alert Publix staff, who then called security. Soon after, an Atlanta Police officer arrived at the store and arrested Rico Marley, who was found with six loaded firearms, including four handguns, an AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun.

Marley was also wearing body armor, according to the report.

While police have not yet said why Marley brought the weapons into the store, Russell said seeing the rifle put him on edge following the mass shooting days earlier at a Boulder, Colo., grocery store that left 10 people dead. That attack took place less than a week after a series of shootings killed eight people, including six Asian women, at Atlanta-area spas.

Boulder Shooting Suspect Makes First Court Appearance : NPR

The suspect in the Boulder, Colo. grocery store shooting that left 10 people dead made his first appearance in court Thursday, in a brief hearing that called for a mental health assessment. Last night, hundreds of people gathered to mourn the victims and support those affected by the senseless gun violence.

Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, is facing 10 counts of murder in the first degree and one count of attempted murder over the horrific attack at a King Soopers supermarket. The victims include a police officer who responded to calls for help. The ages of those who died range from 20 to 65.

Alissa appeared in court alongside his attorney, Kathryn Herold of the Colorado Public Defender’s Office. Alissa wore a white face mask and what looked to be a purple hospital gown. Because of an injury to his leg, the suspected gunman was seated in a wheelchair.

“Our position is that we cannot do anything until we are able to fully assess Mr. Alissa’s mental illness,” Herold told the court as she requested a delay. She did not go into detail about what that illness might be.

Multiple people killed in shooting at supermarket in Boulder, Colorado – CBS News

.

Multiple people were killed Monday when a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. One person has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, and officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Many of the details surrounding the shooting remain unclear. Police Commander Kerry Yamaguchi did not say how many people were killed in the shooting, noting that officials are still processing the crime scene, but said one of the victims is a Boulder police officer.

Yamaguchi said the person of interest was injured and is being treated at the hospital. Helicopter footage from CBS Denver captured authorities escorting a shirtless man in handcuffs who appeared to have a bleeding leg from the scene, but Yamaguchi would not confirm if that man is the person of interest. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as several loud bangs went off in the grocery store. One man said that he first thought someone had dropped something inside the store — but by the third shot, he said, everyone started running.

‘Enough Is Enough’: Atlanta-Area Spa Shootings Spur Debate Over Hate Crime Label : NPR

Most of the victims were women of Asian descent. Authorities say it’s too early to declare the attacks a hate crime – but advocates say there’s a pattern that can’t be ignored.

Asian Americans and their allies are calling for solidarity and a push against discrimination and racist violence after a gunman killed eight people at three Atlanta-area spas Tuesday. Most of the victims were women of Asian descent.

Authorities said it’s too early to declare the attacks a hate crime – prompting a debate over when that label should be used and how to present the gunman’s explanation. In an incident report filed by the Atlanta Police Department, officers checked “no” under whether the attacks were a suspected hate crime. But police said Thursday they are still investigating the attacker’s motive.

The suspect, Robert Aaron Long, 21, has confessed, according to police, who said Long denied being motivated by racial animus. Officials in Cherokee County cited sex addiction and a “bad day” as possible explanations for the crime. Police suspect Long was under the influence of alcohol, according to the Atlanta incident report. He is being held in Cherokee, the county northwest of Atlanta where the shootings started.

Atlanta’s Deputy Chief Charles Hampton told reporters on Thursday afternoon that Long had purchased the weapon the day of the attack. He also confirmed Long had frequented at least two of the spas.
