Suspicious package sent to Rand Paul’s home – POLITICO

The FBI and Capitol Hill police are investigating a suspicious package containing white powder that was delivered to the home of Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Monday, according to a senior adviser to the senator.

A large envelope arrived at the senator’s home in Kentucky and is currently being examined for harmful substances, Sergio Gor said. The sender is unknown.

“I take these threats immensely seriously,” Paul said in a statement. “As a repeated target of violence, it is reprehensible that Twitter allows C-list celebrities to encourage violence against me and my family. Just this weekend Richard Marx called for violence against me and now we receive this powder filled letter.”

Marx, a singer and songwriter who was popular in the 1980s and 1990s, tweeted Sunday, “I’ll say it again: If I ever meet Rand Paul’s neighbor I’m going to hug him and buy him as many drinks as he can consume.”

Paul suffered broken ribs after his neighbor, Rene Boucher, assaulted him in 2017. Boucher pled guilty to assaulting a member of Congress.

Shoplifting in San Francisco is so out of control that retailers are closing stores | The Independent

Among the many problems plaguing San Francisco in recent years, business leaders say one has become so commonplace that residents barely notice it: shoplifting.

Walgreens says petty theft in the city has gotten so out of control that it’s had to close 17 of its stores. CVS has told its employees not to intervene because the thieves so often attack them, calling San Francisco “one of the epicenters of organized retail crime.”

“We’ve had incidents where our security officers are assaulted on a pretty regular basis in San Francisco,” Brendan Dugan, head of CVS’ retail crime division, said at a 13 May hearing with city officials, according to a New York Times report.

Police agree that the stealing has become endemic.“

The one trend we are seeing is more violence and escalating – and much more bold,” Commander Raj Vaswani of the San Francisco Police Department said at the hearing. “We see a lot of repeat offenders.”

Epstein guards admit to falsifying records, will skirt jail time

The two jail employees tasked with guarding pedophile Jeffrey Epstein the night of his suicide in a Manhattan jail have admitted to falsifying records — but will skirt time behind bars under a deal with prosecutors.

Tova Noel and Michael Thomas admitted that they “willfully and knowingly” lied on forms stating that they’d made the required rounds checking on inmates the night of Epstein’s August 2019 suicide

Prosecutors said the guards were sleeping and surfing the web when they should have been monitoring the maximum security federal prisoner, who had recently been on suicide watch at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Under a plea deal announced Friday, they will avoid jail time in connection with their misconduct.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd displays mug shots of Chad Berrien, left, and Kevonte’ Wilson, who are both facing charges in connection with shooting of a 2-year-old girl by her 3-year-old brother.

(CNN)A 2-year-old girl is in an “exceptionally critical condition” after being shot by her 3-year-old brother late Friday when he found a handgun that had been hidden in a couch, according to a Florida sheriff’s office.

Just before midnight, the men “heard a pop and they immediately looked to see that the 2-year-old female had been shot, and was on the couch, and the 3-year-old scrambled from the living room, running and crying to his bedroom,” said Judd.
The men gathered both children and “raced toward the hospital,” the sheriff said.

“A vehicle turned into their path and they T-boned the vehicle on Olive Street, and there were significant injuries from that as well,” Judd said.A good Samaritan stopped, and took the 2-year-old and one of the men to Lakeland Regional Health, Judd said.

Arrest made in Minneapolis shooting that killed 2 in downtown nightclub – StarTribune.com

Minneapolis reeled anew at another outbreak of carnage Saturday after three people were killed in overnight shootings, two of them at a downtown nightclub where eight others were also wounded.

The gunfire, which erupted about 2 a.m. outside the Monarch nightclub at 322 N. 1st Av., came just a few hours after an unrelated fatal shooting in north Minneapolis. The night’s three deaths brought the city’s 2021 homicide toll to 31.

Late Saturday evening, police spokesman John Elder said that a 23-year-old Bloomington man has been arrested and booked on probable cause murder charges in the Monarch shooting. He was one of two shooters at the scene, Elder said. The other was one of the victims.

The bloodshed came as a loosening of pandemic restrictions and warmer weather drew crowds back to restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, and in a city that has debated defunding or reforming the city’s Police Department in the wake of George Floyd’s death a year ago Tuesday. And it brought an outpouring of condemnation and frustration from city leaders and others.

Child killed in apparent road rage incident on 55 Freeway in Orange

A 6-year-old boy was shot and killed during an apparent road rage incident on the 55 Freeway in Orange on Friday morning, and the gunman remains at large, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The child was sitting in a booster seat in the right rear passenger side of his mother’s car when he was struck by the gunfire on the northbound 55 near Chapman Avenue around 8 a.m., according to CHP Officer Florentino Olivera.

He was transported by the Orange Fire Department to Children’s Hospital Orange County, where he died. Authorities have not identified the victim.

“It’s unfortunate we lost a boy this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the mom and the family,” Olivera said.

Investigators spoke with the boy’s mother, who was not injured, as they tried to piece together the events that led up to the deadly gunfire. They are also trying to determine how many shots were fired.

The shooter is believed to have been in a newer model white sedan — possibly a Volkswagen station wagon — but authorities do not have a detailed description of the car or suspect.

Olivera described the road rage incident as “isolated” and said it was unrelated to a string of more than 60 BB or pellet gun shootings that have been reported in Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles counties in the past three weeks, mostly along the 91 Freeway.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Investigator Kevin Futrell of CHP’s Santa Ana office at 714-567-6000.

Neo-Nazi arrested after dumping 3 dead bodies at Albuquerque hospital: FBI – Raw Story – Celebrating 17 Years of Independent Journalism

“A suspected white supremacist is facing charges after allegedly ditching a bullet-riddled car containing three dead men in the parking lot of an Albuquerque hospital this week,” The Daily Beast reported Saturday. “Richard Kuykendall, a 41-year-old with an “apparent association” with the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, was charged Friday with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition for his role in the Wednesday triple homicide, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for New Mexico.”

“Prosecutors allege that after a deadly shootout in a nearby alley, Kuykendall drove to Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital with the victims, removed his shirt and told a security officer ‘that there were three dead guys in the Chevy’ before he walked away,” The Beast reported. “The criminal complaint—first obtained by Seamus Hughes, a researcher at George Washington University’s Program on Extremism and a Daily Beast contributor—notes that authorities only believe Kuykendall ‘may be responsible for the death of one of the three men.'”

How to Protect Your Home Network From ‘FragAttacks’

Hearing your wireless devices are vulnerable to something called “FragAttacks” doesn’t exactly inspire joy. However, the word is scarier than the risk; there’s no evidence that anyone is actively exploiting wireless devices via these vulnerabilities, even given the millions that could be susceptible to FragAttacks—short for “fragmentation and aggregation attacks.”

The name “FragAttack” actually refers to a group of vulnerabilities related to frames, or packets of data, that can be exploited to either steal someone’s information as it passes between networked devices, or to take over a device entirely—whether that’s a simple IoT smart switch or that old laptop you use to browse the web at home. Attackers can either inject unwanted, unencrypted frames into a network, or they can take advantage of how frames are aggregated together (or how aggregates are split apart) to inject and execute data that wasn’t there in the first place.

The best way to keep your network as safe as possible against FragAttack vulnerabilities is to keep your devices updated—and you’ll note this is the same advice we give everyone about every security vulnerability ever. Make sure your routers, smart devices, laptops, phones, or whatever else are all running the most up-to-date firmware and software updates you can find. If you’re lucky, your devices’ manufacturer will have a means for updating them automatically. Otherwise, you’ll need to make sure you’re checking on a regular interval (say, quarterly) for critical updates that can patch up vulnerabilities like these.

Pittsburgh police said Christian Ross (pictured below), 25, of Pittsburgh was arrested and faces the following charges: aggravated arson, two counts of arson endangering persons, two counts of arson endangering property, one count of criminal mischief and one count of causing a catastrophe.

Pittsburgh police, Christian Ross

According to the criminal complaint, Ross was a former tenant in an apartment on the second floor. Investigators said he broke into the apartment multiple times last year after he moved out.

On the day of the fire, investigators said he was allowed back inside to remove his belongings while unsupervised.

May 5, police said Ross handed over a written confession note as an inmate inside the Allegheny County Jail for an unrelated incident.

However, before the confession note, police said surveillance cameras captured Ross leaving the building while it was on fire. The cameras are mounted on the side of the First National Bank building next door.

Investigators also said Ross used a small propane/butane torch to start the fire and he later left it behind at a friend’s house.

The criminal complaint said Ross did not say why he set the fire but did say he only confessed because the incident had been “weighing on him.”

Police said Ross is currently being held in the Allegheny County Jail on separate charges.”

This arrest and corresponding charges were made possible thanks to the seamless cooperation between our Fire Investigation Unit, the ATF, and the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office. I thank everyone for their hard work in bringing this case to a close,” Department of Public Safety Director, Wendell Hissrich said in a news release.
