Police: Pittsburgh mother charged after children left home alone, CYF worker threatened

Laura Barney, 32, charged with endangering the welfare of children and other offenses

Investigators said a caseworker from Allegheny County Children Youth and Families called them about children left home alone and, upon responding to the home on Marlow Street, the CYF worker said she saw four of the five children known that live in the house.

As the investigation continued, the CYF worker asked about the fifth child, a 12-year-old boy, and, according to the criminal complaint, was told he was in the basement.

A police officer checked the basement, finding conditions that were “objectively deplorable,” according to the criminal complaint, including puddles, basement rooms smelling of filth and gnats.

The 12-year-old boy was not found.

Police said the CYF caseworker made contact with Barney a short time later and, upon telling her that CYF would take steps including taking custody of the children, Barney allegedly stated, “Do what you gotta do” and allegedly threatened to cut the caseworker when she arrived at the home.

Upon her arrival, Barney was taken into custody.

Police said Barney said she had gone to a nail salon and claimed the 12-year-old was supposed to be watching the other children.

Barney faces a preliminary hearing on July 28.

Russian gang blamed for global ransomware attack vanishes from web – POLITICO

The ransomware hacker gang REvil’s websites are offline, about a week and a half after the group’s cyberattack on IT software vendor Kaseya allowed the criminals to breach hundreds of companies around the world.

As of Tuesday morning, the group’s public websitethe dark-web portal that facilitated its ransom negotiations with victims and the site that victims used to pay those ransoms were offline.

In addition to REvil’s websites, “all of their infrastructure” used to control their hacking operations is also dark, said Allan Liska, an intelligence analyst who tracks ransomware for the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.

REvil’s public spokesperson, who goes by the pseudonym “Unknown,” “hasn’t been active on message boards since last Thursday,” Liska said.

Pittsburgh man admits to federal charges in string of armed robberies

A Pittsburgh man pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges related to a string of armed robberies that police and the FBI said he carried out with three accomplices across the city and the eastern suburbs in 2018 and 2019.

True Kinnon, 22, pleaded to conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery and brandishing a gun during a violent crime.

Kinnon admitted that he and his cohorts committed seven armed robberies in Allegheny County from November 2018 through February 2019. The group hit convenience stores in Pittsburgh, Penn Hills, Turtle Creek, Oakmont and Monroeville. During some of the heists, Kinnon and the others brandished guns, including an assault-style rifle and a revolver, and threatened employees and customers with the weapons while stealing money and property.

Kinnon and the others were all indicted federally under the Hobbs Act, which prohibits robbery or extortion affecting interstate commerce.

Prosecutors said Kinnon and Jaron Davis, of Penn Hills, robbed a customer at the Home Goods store on Mall Boulevard in Monroeville while attempting to rob the store on Dec. 17, 2018. The next day, Kinnon and Davis robbed a CoGo’s on East Carson Street. On Jan. 30, 2019, Kinnon robbed a CoGo’s on Brownsville Road, prosecutors said, along with Rudolph McBride, of Penn Hills, and Wayne Edwards, of Monroeville.

Kinnon will be sentenced in November.

Johnstown man sentenced in check-cashing scheme | Local News | tribdem.com

A Johnstown man was sentenced Thursday in Cambria County court for running a check-cashing scheme from a Richland Township hotel room in June 2020.

Raheem Akeem Brantley, 35, of the 600 block of Iolite Avenue, was sentenced to 14 to 48 months in prison by Judge Tamara R. Bernstein on forgery charges.

He had pleaded guilty in May.

Bernstein ordered a drug and alcohol assessment on Brantley and noted that, after looking at his past, she would like to help address his drug issues to see if that would help keep him out of the correctional system.

When police arrested Brantley in 2020 on a warrant from Allegheny County while he was staying at Holiday Inn Express on Scalp Avenue, they discovered an open shoe box containing numerous printed checks in various names, fictitious driver’s licenses, a computer and a printer, along with seven grams of heroin.

At the time, Police also seized 41 printed checks with various names and gift cards and found a rubber stamp with the name Active Movement LLC and blank checks in a Mercedes sedan in the parking lot.

The name Active Movement LLC was stamped on two checks used at Walmart in Town Centre Drive. The first check was declined. The second check was approved for $717.27 and was later determined to be a forgery, police said at the time.

Brantley was also ordered to pay $3,464.52 in restitution and court costs.

Man charged after allegedly firing AK-47 near police officers during traffic stop | Fox News

Tennessee man is facing charges after he allegedly fired an AK-47 near where officers were conducting a traffic stop.

“Was that gunshots,” one police officer is heard saying in a video of the incident on July 3 at around 9:30 p.m.

The Dyersburg Police Department stated that three officers were conducting a traffic stop when they heard gunshots coming from a nearby area, prompting them to investigate immediately.

“The gunfire was close with officers hearing tree limbs breaking from the rounds being fired in the wooded lot between the officers and Ewell Street,” the department said in a statement.

The officers spoke with witnesses who also heard the shots, with the investigation leading them to the home of 25-year-old Jeffrey Atwell.

Atwell told police the gunshots were actually fireworks. But during the questioning, the officers were able to identify 24-year-old convicted felon Marcus Akins in the home, who is wanted by police for failing to appear in court. They then located an AK-47.

Hackers demand $70 million to end biggest ransomware attack on record – CBS News

An affiliate of the notorious REvil gang, best known for extorting $11 million from the meat-processor JBS after a Memorial Day attack, infected thousands of victims in at least 17 countries on Friday, largely through firms that remotely manage IT infrastructure for multiple customers, cybersecurity researchers said.

REvil was demanding ransoms of up to $5 million, the researchers said. But late Sunday it offered in a posting on its dark web site a universal decryptor software key that would unscramble all affected machines in exchange for $70 million in cryptocurrency.

Earlier, the FBI said in a statement  that while it was investigating the attack its scale “may make it so that we are unable to respond to each victim individually.” Deputy National Security Advisor Anne Neuberger later issued a statement saying President Joe Biden had “directed the full resources of the government to investigate this incident” and urged all who believed they were compromised to alert the FBI.

Mr. Biden suggested Saturday the U.S. would respond if it was determined that the Kremlin is at all involved. Less than a month ago, he pressed Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop giving safe haven to REvil and other ransomware gangs whose unrelenting extortionary attacks  the U.S. deems a national security threat.

On Monday, Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked if Russia was aware of the attack or had looked into it. He said no, but suggested it could be discussed by the U.S. and Russia in consultations on cybersecurity issues for which no timeline has been specified.

AOC dismisses concern over crime spikes in major cities as ‘hysteria’ | Fox News

“We are seeing these headlines about percentage increases,” Ocasio-Cortez said during a conversation with New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman over Zoom. “Now, I want to say that any amount of harm is unacceptable and too much, but I also want to make sure that this hysteria, you know, that this doesn’t drive a hysteria and that we look at these numbers in context so that we can make responsible decisions about what to allocate in that context.”

CURTIS SILWA PLANS TO CRACK DOWN ON CRIME AS NYC MAYOR Sliwa

Ocasio-Cortez argued earlier in June that authorities should stop building prisons and instead focus on underlying public health issues, adding it is “not acceptable” to use jails as “garbage bins.”

“If we want to reduce violent crime, if we want to reduce the number of people in our jails, the answer is to stop building more of them,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “The answer is to make sure that we actually build more hospitals, we pay organizers, we get people mental health care and overall health care, employment, etc. It’s to support communities, not throw them away.”

Derek Chauvin sentencing: Ex-Minneapolis cop sentenced to 22.5 years in prison in murder of George Floyd | Fox News

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin received a 270-month prison sentence Friday for second-degree unintentional murder in the death of George Floyd last spring.

Minnesota District Court Judge Peter Cahill said a 22-page sentencing memorandum would explain his reasoning on the sentence in greater detail.

“Most of it’s going to be in writing, 22-page memorandum – to emphasize the fact that determining the appropriate sentence in any case and in this case is a legal analysis,” he said. “It’s applying the rule of law to the facts of an individual and specific case. As opposed to trying to be profound here on the record, I prefer you read the legal analysis.”

He added that the sentence was not motivated by “public opinion,” “emotion or sympathy” and granted Chauvin credit for 199 days in time already served.

“I want to acknowledge the deep and tremendous pain that all the families are feeling, especially the Floyd family,” Cahill said. “You have our sympathies, and I acknowledge and hear the pain that you are feeling. I acknowledge the pain not only of those in this courtroom, but the Floyd family outside this courtroom and other members of the community.”
