Westmoreland County water plant not operating after fire

Compressor damaged at the municipal authority plant at Beaver Run Reservoir

A Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County water treatment plant is not currently operating after a fire Thursday night.

Employees at George R. Sweeney Water Treatment Plant at the Beaver Run Reservoir in Bell Township told WTAE the plant is temporarily off line. MAWC is awaiting electricians to arrive to determine the extent of the damage, they said.

The plant serves the northern portion of the MAWC service territory, according to the MAWC website. That includes northern Westmoreland County, parts of Armstrong County and other areas

How long the plant will be down couldn’t be determined. Messages left with the MAWC weren’t immediately returned.

Westmoreland 911 said units were called to extinguish a compressor unit that was in flames at the plant off of Route 380 in Bell Township at about 8:30 p.m.

The fire was put out shortly before 9 p.m.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
