Pittsburgh Public Schools to operate on modified lockdown Monday following mass shooting, four students injured

The Pittsburgh Public Schools district announced schools will operate on a modified lockdown on Monday following Sunday’s mass shooting.

A modified lockdown means that only people with scheduled appointments are permitted in or out of buildings.

The district said administrators are working with school leaders to coordinate student assistance program providers for each school.

The district said it will continue to monitor students’ need to respond with additional support.

Interim Superintendent Wayne N. Walters sent the message below to all families and staff through the district’s parent notification system.

“Good evening PPS families. This is Dr. Wayne Walters, Interim Superintendent. As we conclude Spring Vacation, I would like to wish everyone who celebrates a Happy and Blessed Easter and Passover, and Ramadan Mubarak. So many Pittsburgh families were impacted by today’s tragedy. Because of this and out of an abundance of caution, all district schools will be placed on a modified lockdown tomorrow, Monday, April 18, 2022. A modified lockdown means that only people with scheduled appointments are permitted in or out of our buildings. Our thoughts are with the families of lost loved ones and anyone experiencing grief and trauma during this time. We know that incidents like this can cause residual pain and require ongoing healing. If your child requires services, grief counseling, or assistance, please contact your school’s social worker. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.

“As a friendly reminder, PPS students should take their second at-home COVID test today. If your child tests positive, please notify their school for the next steps and do not report to school tomorrow, Monday, April 18th. Thank you, and have a good evening.”
