Chicago shootings: 47 shot, 9 fatally, in weekend gun violence, police say

CHICAGO — At least 47 people were shot, nine fatally, in weekend shootings across Chicago, police said.

A man was shot while walking his dog at about 11 a.m. Sunday morning in Logan Square, police said. He was struck in the hand and was taken to Humboldt Park Health in West Town in good condition.

Two people were shot, one fatally, in Chicago’s University Village neighborhood around 12:11 a.m. Sunday morning, police said. One man, 21 years old, was killed, and a woman, 38 years old, was hurt in the drive-by shooting that happened in the 1300-bock of W. Hastings Street near South Loomis. An unknown individual fired shots from a passing dark-colored sedan. Police said the woman was shot in the jaw. She was transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and is expected to recover. The man was shot in the back and police said he died at the hospital. No one was in custody. Area Three detectives are investigating.

One person was killed and another wounded Sunday morning in University Village on the Near West Side. A man, 21, was standing outside about 12:10 a.m. in the 1300-block of West Hastings Street when someone fired shots from a passing dark-colored sedan, striking him in the back, Chicago police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name hasn’t been released yet. A 38-year-old woman sitting nearby was struck in the jaw and was taken to the same hospital, where she was in good condition, police said.
