Online publication NEXTpittsburgh has been sold to a local investor who said he plans to maintain its focus on news about the region’s arts, culture, technology, and business sectors and possibly expand coverage of public policy issues.
The site’s new owner, John Rhoades, said he was seeking a new venture after selling some of his stake in Beauty Shoppe, a Pittsburgh company that operates co-working and event spaces.
Mr. Rhoades, 37, acquired NEXTpittsburgh from its founder, Tracy Certo.
Financial terms of the deal, which was effective Jan. 1, were not disclosed.Ms. Certo said Mr. Rhoades approached her through a business broker about four months ago.“I thought, ‘Who in Pittsburgh wants to buy media in the midst of a pandemic?’” Ms. Certo said Monday after the sale was announced on NEXTpittsburgh’s website.Though she didn’t have a formal exit strategy in place for the business, the idea of selling had been in the back of her mind, said Ms. Certo, who launched the publication in March 2014.
