Manhole fire breaks out during rush hour in downtown Pittsburgh

P

Flames and dark smoke began coming out of a downtown manhole near the Allegheny County Courthouse during the Monday evening rush hour in Pittsburgh.

Firefighters responded to the corner of Grant Street and Forbes Avenue, along with police officers and Duquesne Light workers.

Chemical foam was being sprayed into the hole to extinguish the fire, which Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said was electrical in nature.

Traffic was continuing to move, but Public Safety was asking people to avoid the area.
