Chicken is often the culprit in U.S. food poisoning cases, according to CDC report

The CDC says that the increases could be the result of new diagnostic tools that help identify more cases.

As recent illnesses tied to raw turkeyground beefcut melon and romaine lettuce suggest, U.S. food poisoning cases don’t appear to be going away anytime soon.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report Thursday that the frequency of several types of food poisoning infections climbed last year, but that the increases could be the result of new diagnostic tools that help identify more cases.

Overall, the agency believes food poisoning rates have remained largely unchanged

Colorado Highway Crash: Fiery 28-Vehicle Pileup Closes I-70 Near Denver : NPR

The crash involved at least 24 cars and four semis. One of the trucks was carrying a flatbed full of lumber — which contributed to a large fire on the roadway.

Six people were taken to the hospital, including the driver of the semi. That driver, who sustained minor injuries, is now in police custody and is being charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide, Countryman said. Police did not identify the driver, other than to say he’s not from Colorado.

Parts of I-70 remain closed Friday morning — and highway officials say it isn’t likely to open until sometime Saturday. The closure caused long delays in the morning commute, with investigators still combing the area, and workers trying to clean up debris in the eastbound lanes where the crash took place. Westbound lanes are also closed, with motorists using a detour to avoid a bridge where the greatest damage occurred.

Warfighters Need ‘Uncompromised’ Technology, Official Says > U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE > Article

“We are in a very highly contested environment, with our opponents quite successfully taking our stuff,” William Stephens said at a forum on supply chain security and software at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noting that U.S. intelligence analysts and other sources support that assessment.

Techniques adversaries use to figure out new U.S. technology before soldiers or airmen get a chance to use it vary greatly, he said, but include such things as exploitation of relationships in the technology community — such as at conferences and trade shows — as well as email and mail, surveillance, exploitation of cyber operations, exports or supply chains, and even insider access and outright theft.

Americans pay for a lot of technology to support the warfighter, Stephens said, and when that technology is compromised before the warfighter is able to use it, Americans lose out on their investment. But the biggest threat from compromised technology, he added, is to warfighters themselves.

11-year-old boy killed in Pennsylvania Turnpike crash

Pennsylvania Turnpike in Westmoreland County was shut down for several hours

A child died in a crash involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Westmoreland County on Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened in the eastbound lanes between New Stanton (Exit 75) and Donegal (Exit 91) in Mount Pleasant Township.

The coroner has identified the child as 11-year-old Hayden Field of Connellsville Township, Fayette County.

The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office said Hayden was the front-seat passenger of a 2008 Nissan Frontier that was traveling eastbound on I-76.

For an unknown reason, the pickup truck crashed into the back of a Freightliner tractor-trailer and ended up under the back of the trailer. The accident lawyer riverside was called immediately to help with the situation and Hayden was trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner’s office said Hayden was wearing a seat belt.

All eastbound traffic was detoured off the turnpike at New Stanton for several hours.

State police are investigating the crash.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, on leave amid book probe, has homes and City Hall office raided by feds | Fox News

Federal agents raided two homes belonging to Baltimore’s embattled mayor as well as City Hall on Thursday amid ongoing investigations into lucrative sales of her “Healthy Holly” books.

The Democratic mayor, who is currently on a leave of absence she’s blamed on pneumonia, has faced mounting calls to resign after it was discovered she reportedly received $500,000 from the University of Maryland Medical System for her self-authored “Healthy Holly” children’s book series.

UMMS reportedly paid Pugh for 100,000 copies of her books between 2011 and 2018, while she was on its board, with the stated intention of distributing the books to schools and day care centers.

But some 50,000 copies remain unaccounted for and officials are probing if they were ever even printed.

CDC Reports Largest U.S. Measles Outbreak Since Year 2000

There are 695 cases in 22 states. HHS Secretary Alex Azar said the spike was “avoidable” and he called measles vaccines “among the most extensively studied medical products we have.”

The agency attributed the high number of cases primarily to a few large outbreaks — one in the state of Washington and two others in New York City and New York state. The New York outbreaks are among the largest and longest lasting since 2000.

“The longer these outbreaks continue, the greater the chance measles will again get a sustained foothold in the United States,” the CDC said.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said, in a statement, said the rise in measles cases is “avoidable.”

“Measles is not a harmless childhood illness, but a highly contagious, potentially life-threatening disease,” he said. “We have the ability to safely protect our children and our communities. Vaccines are a safe, highly effective public health solution that can prevent this disease. The measles vaccines are among the most extensively studied medical products we have, and their safety has been firmly established over many years in some of the largest vaccine studies ever undertaken.”

Americans getting more inactive, computers partly to blame

Americans are becoming increasingly sedentary, spending almost a third of their waking hours sitting down, and computer use is partly to blame, a new study found.

Over almost a decade, average daily sitting time increased by roughly an hour, to about eight hours for U.S. teens and almost 6 1/2 hours for adults, according to the researchers. That includes school and work hours, but leisure-time computer use among all ages increased too.

By 2016, at least half of American kids and adults spent an hour or more of leisure time daily using computers. There are many services like this Managed IT Services Chicago who are bringing in courses which can help people understand and develop on the skill. The biggest increase was among the oldest adults: 15% of retirement-aged adults reported using computers that often in 2003-04, soaring to more than half in 2015-16.

Popular e-cigarette products contaminated with bacterial and fungal toxins, study finds

Human exposure to the toxins has previously been associated with lung diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and COPD.

“Finding these toxins in e-cigarette products adds to the growing concerns that we have about the safety of e-cigarettes,” said Dr. David Christiani, study author and professor of environmental genetics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public in Boston.

The researchers examined 75 popular e-cigarette products — 37 single-use cartridges and 38 e-liquids from 10 top selling U.S. brands. The products were classified into four different flavor categories: tobacco, menthol, fruit, and other; and screened for the presence of endotoxin and glucan, toxic inflammatory substances that damage the lungs.

They found that 17 of 75 products, 23%, contained traces of endotoxin, a potent inflammatory molecule found in bacteria, and 61 of 75 products, 81%, contained traces of glucan, a toxic substance found in the cell walls of most fungi. Exposure to these microbial toxins has been associated with a myriad of health problems, including asthma, reduced lung function, and inflammation.
