98.6 Degrees Is A Normal Body Temperature, Right? Not Quite | WIRED

Fever is a more flexible concept than people assume, as new crowdsourced data study helps show.

The study, published online this month in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, refutes the age-old benchmark of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Instead, Jonathan Hausmann and his colleagues found an average normal temperature in adults of 97.7 degrees, as measured with an oral thermometer. (The published study uses results from 329 healthy adults.) As for fever, Hausmann found that it begins at 99.5 degrees, on average.

The current drug overdose crisis has killed more people than who live in major US cities like Denver and Washington, DC.

According to preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017 was the worst year for drug overdose deaths in US history. That year, more than 72,000 people died of overdoses — or nearly 200 people a day. That’s more overdose deaths in a single year than ever before, and at least two-thirds of those deaths were linked to opioids.

United is raising the price of checked bags

The airline is increasing the cost from $25 to $30 on many routes. JetBlue announced a similar price hike earlier this week.

The price increase comes at a time when airlines are battling rising fuel and labor costs. The International Air Transport Association, a global industry group, has slashed its forecast for total profits for the global airline industry in 2018 by 12%.

But airlines are making up those costs with ancillary fees, like checking bags and picking a seat. In 2017, US airlines collected $4.6 billion in baggage fees, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
