Several buildings evacuated after explosion in Flatiron District

At least five high-pressure steam pipes exploded early Thursday on Fifth Avenue at 21st Street in the Flatiron District, prompting the evacuation of nearly a dozen nearby buildings.

The explosions, which happened around 6:40 a.m., sent a massive plume of scalding steam skyward.

“It was like the street just blew up, ” said witness Ceesay Seering, 56.

Personnel from the Office of Emergency Management and the FDNY’s hazmat team rushed to the scene, along with Con Edison.
