India says it accidentally fired missile into Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, New Delhi — India said on Friday it had accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan this week because of a “technical malfunction” during routine maintenance, giving its version of events after Pakistan summoned India’s envoy to protest.

Military experts have in the past warned of the risk of accidents or miscalculations by the nuclear-armed neighbours, which have fought three wars and engaged in numerous smaller armed clashes, usually over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Tensions have eased in recent months, and the incident, which may have been the first of its kind, immediately raised questions about safety mechanisms.

“On March 9, 2022, in the course of a routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile,” the Indian Ministry of Defence said in a three-paragraph statement.

“It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident.”

Police: Two masked men fired shots at vehicle in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH —

Pittsburgh police are searching for the suspects after multiple shots were fired at a vehicle in the city’s Bloomfield neighborhood.

The incident happened a little after 9:15 p.m. Friday on the 400 block of South Atlantic Avenue.

Responding officers found a Toyota Camry that was running but unoccupied.

Police said three of the people who were in the car later returned to the scene, telling officers they were traveling behind a Jeep when two masked men began shooting toward their vehicle.

Police said the driver of the Toyota Camry put the vehicle in reverse to get away and sideswiped a  parked vehicle and hit another before getting out and running.

No one was hurt but the Toyota Camry was damaged.

1 arrest after 7 fentanyl-laced cocaine overdoses during West Point cadets’ spring break party

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – Detectives announced late Friday night that they had arrested a suspect in connection to seven overdoses of fentanyl-laced cocaine at a home in Broward County.

The victims included West Point cadets, according to the U.S. Military Academy. Three still remained hospitalized on Friday — including two whose condition were critical.

The group of college students on spring break from New York needed help shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday, at a short-term rental, at 811 NW 29 Court in Wilton Manors.

Six were hospitalized first and a woman later in the day, according to the Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Department.

Police brace for large crowds as Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade returns | TribLIVE.com

For the first time since 2019, Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade will go on as planned in March, and police are expecting its return to be very well-attended.

“After two very challenging years, it’s understandable that people will be in the mood to celebrate one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved traditions: St. Patrick’s Day,” said Public Safety Director Lee Schmidt.

The parade was canceled in 2020 as the covid-19 pandemic took hold. In 2021, it was pushed to September as covid cases again surged throughout the winter and into the early spring.

Schmidt urged revelers to keep in mind that “while the worst of the pandemic appears to have waned at this moment, it has not disappeared entirely.”

In addition to large crowds along the parade route, authorities also expect the usual party spots – the South Side, Downtown and the North Shore – to see crowds reminiscent of pre-pandemic celebrations.

Temporary light towers will be in the busiest areas, and firefighters and liquor control officers will be doing occupancy checks. Schmidt said bars and restaurants exceeding their posted occupancy limits will be cleared and closed.

As with most city celebrations, Pittsburgh police will be out in full force, including the mounted unit, motorcycle and bicycle units, and K-9 units. County and state police also will be patrolling.

Hempfield substitutes getting a pay raise

Substitute teachers in the Hempfield Area School District will see a boost in their daily pay, an effort by district leaders to remain competitive during the covid-19 pandemic. Board members this week voted to bump pay rates to $200 per day for substitute teachers who are teaching for a contracted teacher on an approved leave of absence, and $150 per day for day-to-day substitutes. Substitutes previously earned $100 per day for the first 30 days and then $120 per day, said Superintendent Tammy Wolicki.

“The increase is necessary to remain competitive,” Wolicki said. “Our classrooms are without substitute teachers daily and we need individuals with teaching degrees to find our jobs more competitive than working at Walmart, Target or other businesses that have increased hourly wages.”

Judge issues temporary injunction barring Texas from investigating pediatric gender-affirming care as ‘child abuse’

(CNN)A judge in Texas blocked the state from enforcing Gov. Greg Abbott’s order to investigate gender-affirming care of minors as “child abuse.”

“The court finds sufficient cause to enter a temporary injunction,” Judge Amy Clark Meachum, in Travis County, said Friday evening.

The judge said Abbott’s order was “beyond the scope of his authority and unconstitutional,” and stated that parents of a transgender child and a psychologist who filed suit against the governor were likely to prevail in their case.

Friends Playing Video Games At Home In Pittsburgh Ends With 1 Dead – CBS Pittsburgh

 

It started with a group of friends playing video games and ended with one person dead.

A woman who didn’t want to be identified said she knew the 21-year-old man who was shot and killed just steps from her front door.

She told KDKA that the victim, Maurice Cole, and the suspect were both at her house playing video games with her son right before the shooting.

“It just happened so fast. I saw the boy running out the door and I saw the other boy running after him and he just shot him on the steps,” she said.

Crime scene tape still surrounds part of her home on Frayne Street, where police said the shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday night. When officers got to her house, Cole took off.

Cole drove off in a black Jeep and led police on a high-speed chase to the Homestead Grays Bridge, where he got stopped in traffic. Officers helped Cole until the medics arrived. He later died at the hospital.

Neighbors on the quiet street are still trying to process what happened.

Sarah Williams, who lives a few doors down, said, “My heart always goes out to anybody that is involved in violence and their family. I have a son and somebody’s mom is having to deal with that today and that makes me sad.”

At one point during the chase, the white vehicle cut through a gas station before turning onto N. Bellflower Boulevard in Long Beach. The car later pulled over and the driver got out and started to run away. The driver was taken into custody moments later.

Man in custody after SWAT situation on Mt. Washington

PITTSBURGH — A man is in custody after a SWAT situation on Mt. Washington Wednesday evening.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, Zone 3 Pittsburgh Police officers were called to the 600 block of Curtis Street for a domestic call for a dispute between a male and a female.

The male was armed with a gun and allegedly threatened the female.

Negotiators made repeated attempts to contact and speak with the male by phone, and by verbal calls over a loudspeaker.

After over two hours, police eventually spoke with the man by phone and convinced him to come outside. He surrendered without incident.

The children were unharmed and evaluated by paramedics on scene.

Pittsburgh Public Safety says that charges are expected.

The identity of the male has not been released.

Scammers are spoofing a Pittsburgh police station’s phone number

⚠️ SCAM ALERT: The caller often pretends to be a detective.

PITTSBURGH — Scammers are spoofing a phone number that appears to be from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police’s Zone 6 station.

Pittsburgh police alerted the public to the scam on Tuesday in a Facebook post.

SCAM ALERT: Recently, we have received reports of a phone scam targeting Pittsburgh residents.

These scammers are “spoofing” or using a number that looks like the Zone 6 station phone number.

The caller often poses as a Zone 6 detective and claims they are investigating the recipient of the call for a crime. They demand payments and gift cards to settle the warrants or charges.

Pittsburgh Bureau of Police would like to remind everyone we will never ask for people to pay warrants and fines over the phone.

If you receive one of these calls, please hang up and contact police directly.

Shooting victim leads police on pursuit before dying at Pittsburgh hospital

It’s not clear what led to the shooting.

PITTSBURGH — One person is dead after they were shot and led police on a pursuit onto the Homestead Grays Bridge on Tuesday night.

According to police, 21-year-old Maurice Cole was shot near the intersection of Frayne Street and Sabina Street in Hazelwood just after 9:45 p.m. Cole then got into a Jeep and led police on a pursuit before stopping in the middle of traffic on the bridge. Investigators said they pursued him because of his gunshot.

Paramedics tried to help the man, but he died at the scene.

PITTSBURGH — A man is dead and another person was detained by police after a shooting Monday afternoon in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, authorities said.

Police were alerted to the shooting just before 3:30 p.m. when a ShotSpotter detected gunshots along Bedford Avenue.

Senate passes Emmett Till Antilynching Act of 2022 – CNNPolitics

(CNN)The Senate passed the Emmett Till Antilynching Act of 2022 on Monday night by unanimous consent. The bill, which would make lynching a federal hate crime, now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature.

The legislation was approved by the House of Representatives last week by a vote of 422-3. Passage of the bill is a long-sought goal of advocates, who have been working for years to secure its approval in Congress.
“After more than 200 failed attempts to outlaw lynching, Congress is finally succeeding in taking the long overdue action by passing the Emmett Till Antilynching Act. Hallelujah. It’s long overdue,” said Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in remarks on the Senate floor after the bill’s passage.
That it took so long to pass is a “bitter stain” on America, the New York Democrat added.

Delivery drivers in Pittsburgh area feeling pain at the pump

GREENSBURG, Pa. —

Rising gas prices are having an immediate impact on the bottom line for businesses that rely on deliveries.

Tom Luscombe is the third-generation owner of Greensburg Floral. He told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that more than 90% of his business comes from deliveries throughout Westmoreland County.

“There is no budget for it,” Luscombe said. “As the prices go up daily, it affects the flowers coming in and the flowers going out.”

Luscombe said the shop changed its business model during the pandemic and now has less staff, which means more hours for everyone else. He said increased fuel costs will ultimately trickle down to customers, but he’s hoping better days are ahead.

“Hang in there and pray. That’s what we’re doing,” Luscombe said.

Gas prices in the Pittsburgh area went up nearly 50 cents per gallon for regular in the past week. For delivery drivers, it’s an added cost of doing business.

“It just cost me $96 to fill up and before it was in the $60-70 range,” delivery driver Rich O’Neal said.

O’Neal is a retired police officer who now delivers for apps such as Roadie and Shipt.

“The rate they are paying me isn’t going up, but the rate I’m paying to do this sure is,” O’Neal said. “It’s going to reach a point where it’s not cost-effective to do this anymore.”

Structural repairs to closing of Westmoreland Courthouse entrance, courtyard

Courthouse Square and the Main Street entrance to the Westmoreland County Courthouse will be closed for at least six months to repair structural issues on the lower two underground parking levels below the government complex in Greensburg. Commissioners on Tuesday are expected to award a $7 million emergency contract for repairs.

1 person taken to hospital after possible lightning strike hits Munhall church

There were 12 people inside the building when it happened.

MUNHALL, Pa. — Dozens of bricks fell from the Cleft of the Rock Ministries building during Monday’s storm that produced strong winds.

Structural engineers are on their way to see if the building is safe enough for people to move back in. But the pastor tells us that he’s worried about having enough money to fix the damage.

“I live next door, and I was carrying stuff down in the basement. It shook the steps and it shook the whole house,” said volunteer Phillip Jones.

Reports of power outages, downed trees follow onslaught of wind gusts in Pittsburgh region | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The National Weather Service’s severe thunderstorm warning expired late Monday afternoon for southwestern Pennsylvania, but the storm’s effects continued to be felt into the evening.

As the old saying goes, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb — and predictions for Monday’s storm were lion-esque. The NWS predicted wind speeds of up to 60 miles per hour for Monday’s storm, which could result in downed trees and power lines that may cause outages.

Indeed, as the storm moved out of the region, reports of trees and wires down came flooding in from all of the county — areas including Ross, Plum and parts of Pittsburgh such as near Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side.

Around 5:30 p.m., Duquesne Light reported 92 outages, which affected nearly 9,000 people. Penn Hills and Mt. Lebanon were two of the hardest-hit areas, according to the Duquesne Light outages map. Monroeville, McKeesport and Plum were areas of Allegheny County that were expected to see the worst of the storm, according to the NWS.

Parts of Washington, Westmoreland, Greene, Armstrong and Fayette counties were also included in the thunderstorm warning. There is also a chance for “isolated incidents of damaging wind gusts” throughout the evening, the weather service said.

Joint Base Andrews: One arrested with weapon after VP Harris’ arrival, another at large – CNNPolitics

(CNN)Security personnel at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday night arrested one person with a weapon, while another remains at large, according to a news release, shortly after Vice President Kamala Harris had arrived on the base.

Security personnel deployed barriers to stop the intruders’ vehicle, which arrived around 9 p.m. ET and failed to follow commands at the base’s Main Gate, the release said. No shots were fired.
Harris had arrived on the base at 8:47 p.m. ET via Air Force Two, according to pool reports, after a trip to Selma, Alabama, to mark the 57th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.
The motive behind the incident was not immediately clear.

Russian officials announced a ceasefire at 10 a.m. in major cities to allow for evacuations. Ukrainian officials on Sunday said that Russian shelling prevented escape as hundreds of thousands were reportedly trying to flee the city of Mariupol and other parts of Ukraine.

‘The Batman’ Opens to $120 Million Overseas, Nears $250 Million Globally – Variety

 

 

 

Robert Pattinson’s “The Batman” towered over international box office charts, collecting $120 million from 74 overseas markets.

After debuting to $128.5 million in North America, the Warner Bros. comic book adventure has generated $248.5 million globally to date. That’s a strong start since the movie, which clocks in at a butt-numbing three hours, cost $200 million to make.

Outside of domestic theaters, “The Batman” had the best turnout in the United Kingdom, where it earned $18.4 million, followed by Mexico, where it earned $12 million. Other top territories include Australia ($9.2 million), Brazil ($8.8 million), France ($8.5 million), Germany ($5.1 million) and Korea ($4.4 million). “The Batman” doesn’t open in China, which is currently the world’s biggest theatrical market, until March 18. It won’t play at all in Russia after Warner Bros. opted to pull its release following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Protests across Russia see thousands detained – BBC News

More than 4,300 people were detained at anti-war protests across Russia on Sunday, rights groups and Russian authorities say.

Some 1,700 people were detained in Moscow alone, Ria news agency reports, citing the interior ministry.

The OVD-Info rights group says detentions took place in 53 cities.

Although protests have become increasingly restricted in recent years, numerous rallies have taken place across Russia since the invasion.

In the last 11 days, more than 10,000 people have been detained at protests, OVD-Info says.

“The screws are being fully tightened – essentially we are witnessing military censorship,” Maria Kuznetsova, OVD-Info’s spokeswoman, told Reuters news agency from Tbilisi in Georgia.
