Washington (CNN)A US Coast Guard ship fired approximately 30 warning shots as a “large group” of Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy fast boats conducted “unsafe and unprofessional maneuvers” near US naval vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.
Six US Navy vessels were escorting a guided missile submarine, the USS Georgia, when they encountered a group of 13 IRGCN “fast attack boats,” Kirby told reporters. The boats approached the US Navy vessels “at high speed,” coming as close as within 150 yards.After the US tried “all the appropriate and established procedures involving hip blasts, bridge to bridge radio transmission and other ways of communicating,” US Coast Guard Cutter Maui fired approximately 30 warning shots, Kirby said. Following the second round of warning shots, the IRGCN fast boats “broke contact.”

Indonesian officials working to determine how a military submarine with 53 crew members sunk earlier this month during a training exercise said the vessel may have been hit by an internal solitary wave in the treacherous waters off Bali.
Australia’s ABC.net.au reported that such waves are invisible but have the strength to drag a submarine down to dangerous depths. The report said that there have been several theories, but evidence seems to point to a wave that would not be evident on the surface of the water.
The report said Indonesian naval officials consulted satellite images from the region and determined that these kind of massive waves were in the area at the time of the sinking.
Rear Adm. Iwan Isnurwanto, the commander of the Indonesian Navy Command and Staff School, told the station that the wave may have “moved up from the bottom to the north, and there’s a trench between two mountains.”

Under these circumstances, the attack by the determined but inexperienced youths who dreamed of “liberating Cuba from Castro” lasted less than 72 hours.

Indonesian submarine believed sunk as debris from vessel is found, Navy says – CNN
Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)Indonesia’s Navy changed the status of its missing submarine from “sub miss” to “sub sank” on Saturday, as a naval chief presented debris believed to be from the vessel at a news conference.
Authorities now expect to carry out an evacuation process to recover the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine and its crew when they pinpoint its exact location, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Yudo Margono said.The latest update came as hopes faded for the 53 crew members, who were expected to have run out of oxygen early on Saturday. So far, no sign of them has been found, Yudo said.Some warships deployed to the Bali Sea, where the submarine was last contacted Wednesday, will be used to help find the vessel by detecting metal or magnetic objects in the sea, Yudo said.

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)An unidentified object has been spotted at the site of the ongoing search for a missing Indonesian submarine with 53 crew members on board, as authorities warn oxygen on the vessel will run out within 24 hours.
An Indonesian naval vessel detected an object with “strong magnetic resonance” at a depth of 50 to 100 meters (164 to 328 feet), Maj. Gen. Achmad Riad, the head of the military’s central information unit, said during a press conference on Friday.The Indonesian navy expects its warship, the Riguel, to reach the search area Friday morning local time, Riad added. The Riguel is equipped with a high-tech sonar, which uses sound waves to locate objects, and the navy is hopeful it will be able to find the KRI Nanggala-402, a German-made submarine which lost contact during a military exercise in the Bali Strait early morning Wednesday, local time.Australia, Singapore and the United States are sending support in the search for the missing submarine, with Australia announcing in a press release Friday that it is sending two ships to the site.

Biden selects first woman four-star admiral for the Coast Guard
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has nominated Coast Guard Vice Adm. Linda Fagan to the role of vice commandant, making her the first woman to achieve a fourth-star in the service.
Fagan, the head of the Coast Guard’s Pacific area of operations, would replace Adm. Charles Ray, who has been the Coast Guard’s No. 2 officer since May 2018. Defense News first reported the nomination early Monday.
According to her biography, Fagan has served on all seven continents. She previously held command roles along the east coast, and also served as deputy director of operations for Headquarters at U.S. Northern Command.
“I am pleased that President Biden has nominated Vice Admiral Linda Fagan to be the Vice Commandant of the United States Coast Guard,” Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. “She is a superb leader who, as the 32nd Vice Commandant, will guide the Coast Guard at a time when its mission of securing our maritime borders, ports, and waterways has never been more important.

National Guard member in DC dies after medical emergency
A National Guard member stationed in Washington, DC, to protect the Capitol died after suffering a medical emergency while off duty, a spokesperson for the force said Thursday.
The Guard member’s name and details about their death were not immediately released.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Guard’s joint task force in DC said the death was under investigation.
“Joint Task Force District of Columbia is sad to confirm the death of a National Guard member serving with the U.S. Capitol security mission due to an apparent medical emergency. The individual was not on duty at the time, and the incident is under investigation,” the spokesperson said.
More than 2,000 Guard soldiers are stationed in the nation’s capital and are scheduled to remain there until at least May, the Pentagon ordered earlier this week.

National Guard Will Extend Deployment At U.S. Capitol : NPR
The Pentagon has approved a request to continue National Guard support at the U.S. Capitol through May 23, 2021. About 2,300 troops will remain at the Capitol, which is about half the number currently deployed, the Department of Defense said Tuesday evening.
The National Guard personnel were expected to leave the Capitol on March 12 after remaining there since the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection attempt. But U.S. Capitol Police last week requested a 60-day extension following intelligence that showed a possible security threat from an identified militia group.
That threat led the House of Representatives to cancel its March 4 session, though no attack occurred.
The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement it is “extremely grateful” for the Defense Department’s partnership in protecting Congress.
The National Guard has been sharply criticized for its handling of the Jan. 6 riots and, in particular, a delayed response that left troops standing by for hours before being authorized to intervene.
The D.C. National Guard’s commanding general testified last week that the Department of Defense took more than three hours to approve a “frantic request” for support from USCP.

B-52s again fly over Mideast in US military warning to Iran
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A pair of B-52 bombers flew over the Mideast on Sunday, the latest such mission in the region aimed at warning Iran amid tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The flight by the two heavy bombers came as a pro-Iran satellite channel based in Beirut broadcast Iranian military drone footage of an Israeli ship hit by a mysterious explosion only days earlier in the Mideast. While the channel sought to say Iran wasn’t involved, Israel has blamed Tehran for what it described as an attack on the vessel.

Afghanistan conflict: US makes new push for UN-led peace process – BBC News
The US secretary of state seeks to jump start stalled talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has made a blunt new push for a UN-led peace effort in Afghanistan.
In a letter to the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Mr Blinken called for a 90-day reduction in violence and a transitional government formed from both sides.
Mr Blinken also said no decision had been made about whether to stick to a planned US troop withdrawal by 1 May.
He called on President Ghani to show “urgent leadership”.
A deal struck with the Taliban during the Trump administration in February 2020 committed the US to withdrawing by 1 May, but Afghan officials fear the move would create enormous security challenges.
Mr Blinken warned in his letter that the Taliban could make “rapid territorial gains” across the country in a “spring offensive”.

Michigan National Guardsmen tasked with continuing to protect the U.S. Capitol have said they’re being provided food that’s “badly undercooked, raw, moldy, and even filled with metal shavings,” according to a letter from the state’s House delegation obtained by CBS News on Tuesday. Some guardsmen have been hospitalized after eating the food, the letter said.
“It is clear that these contracted meals are poorly prepared, oftentimes inedible, and highly inadequate to support our soldiers,” the 14 lawmakers said in the letter, which was sent to the chief of the National Guard Bureau at the Pentagon. “It is completely unacceptable that our men and women serving in Washington, D.C., are being hospitalized due to the food they are being provided.”

The U.S. military carried out an airstrike against an Iranian-backed militia stronghold in Syria Thursday, a senior official told Fox News.
In the first known military action by President Biden, multiple facilities were struck by American F15 fighter jets that targeted Iraqi border-based Shia militia groups, Kait’ib Hezbollah and Kait’ib Sayyid al Shuhada.

The National Guard could stay in Washington, D.C. for the next several months, with an internal email indicating troops could be on the ground in the U.S. capital until Fall 2021, according to a recent report.
An internal communication obtained by local affiliate FOX 5 DC shows the National Security Council has asked the Department of Defense (DoD) to coordinate plans with the U.S. Capitol Police for continued deployment beyond the previously set March date.
Senior defense officials told Fox New’s Jennifer Griffin on Monday the email was part of “internal deliberations” and “no decisions have been made.”

“The original 2017 FOIA request made to the DIA asks for the physical descriptions, properties, and composition of UFO/UAP material held by the government and its contractor,” he said, adding that the documents refer to “UFO/UAP material and physical debris recovered by personnel of the Department of Defense as residue, flotsam, shot-off material or crashed UAPs or unidentified flying objects.”
He attached the request and parts of the five documents he was given access to, showing that testing was being carried out by Bigelow Aerospace, a Las Vegas, Nevada-based company that performs private contract jobs for the Department of Defense.

Around 10 pounds of explosives have vanished from a Marine Corps base in Southern California, reports said Thursday.
The explosives, identified as C-4, were being stored at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, KGTV-TV of San Diego first reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.
“Out of respect for the investigative process, NCIS does not comment on or confirm details relating to ongoing investigations,” Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) spokesman Jeff Houston told Fox News in an email early Friday.
The C-4 disappeared during a long training exercise two weeks earlier and may have been stolen. A reward was being offered for its safe return, the San Diego station reported.
C-4 is a high-powered explosive and one-tenth of the amount stolen could blow up a car, a former bomb technician told KGTV.

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar’s military staged a coup Monday and detained senior politicians including Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi — a sharp reversal of the significant, if uneven, progress toward democracy the Southeast Asian nation has made following five decades of military rule.
An announcement read on military-owned Myawaddy TV said Commander-in-Chief Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing would be in charge of the country for one year. It said the seizure was necessary because the government had not acted on the military’s claims of fraud in November’s elections — in which Suu Kyi’s ruling party won a majority of the parliamentary seats up for grabs — and because it allowed the election to go ahead despite the coronavirus pandemic.
The takeover came the morning the country’s new parliamentary session was to begin and follows days of concern that a coup was coming. The military maintains its actions are legally justified — citing a section of the constitution it drafted that allows it to take control in times of national emergency — though Suu Kyi’s party spokesman as well as many international observers have said it amounts to a coup.
It was a dramatic backslide for Myanmar, which was emerging from decades of strict military rule and international isolation that began in 1962. It was also a shocking fall from power for Suu Kyi, a Nobel peace laureate who had lived under house arrest for years as she tried to push her country toward democracy and then became its de facto leader after her National League for Democracy won elections in 2015.

Fort Bliss soldiers poisoned after drinking substance they thought was booze
Eleven soldiers at a military base in Texas have been hospitalized after drinking a poisonous substance they thought was alcohol, Army officials said.
The soldiers drank the unknown substance after a 10-day field exercise at Fort Bliss’s McGregor Range Complex ended on Thursday, Fort Bliss officials said in a statement.
Officials said the soldiers thought they were drinking booze, which is banned at the base.
They then began experiencing symptoms between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. that same day.
All were taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and two soldiers were admitted to the intensive care unit because that are seriously ill, officials said.
Toxicology results showed the soldiers — who are assigned the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 32d Army Air and Missile Defense Command — were suffering from ethylene glycol poisoning.

WASHINGTON, DC — Two Army National Guard members have been removed from the inauguration security mission after vetting found they had ties to far-right fringe groups, a U.S. official told ABC News Tuesday.
“We don’t allow extremism of any type in our organization,” Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau, said Tuesday morning.
The two Guard members are among the 25,000 National Guard troops who have been sent to Washington to augment security at the inauguration in the wake of the violent Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.

Fort Bliss soldier, Pfc. Asia Graham, found dead on NYE – New York Daily News
Army officials are investigating the death of a 19-year-old soldier who was found unresponsive at a Texas military base on New Year’s Eve.
Pfc. Asia Graham was pronounced dead Thursday after her body was found in her barracks room at Fort Bliss, which is headquartered in El Paso. The circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation, authorities said in a news release Saturday.
The North Carolina native joined the Army in July 2019 and arrived at Fort Bliss five months later after completing combat training in Missouri and South Carolina, according to the release.She was assigned to the 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade, where she served as a human resource specialist.
