Six unanswered touchdowns turned a tight game into a rout

In a game that evoked memories of their 2018 Super Bowl run, the Chiefs endured a slow start before scoring an avalanche of points during Sunday night’s 42-21 win over the Steelers in the AFC wild card round. 

Kansas City punted three times and committed two turnovers on its first five possessions. The Chiefs fell behind 7-0 when T.J. Watt returned Darrel Williams’ fumble 26 yards for a score. The score awakened the previously slumbering Chiefs, who proceeded to score touchdowns on six consecutive possessions. Five touchdowns came from the right arm of Patrick Mahomes, who threw for over 400 yards to send the Chiefs to the divisional round. It was a tough final game for Pittsburgh and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who once again showcased his resiliency by leading the Steelers on two late scoring drives.

The Chiefs took a 21-7 halftime lead on Mahomes’ 48-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce, who tied an NFL record by reaching 100 receiving yards in four consecutive playoff games. Kansas City’s offense essentially ended the game with two quick touchdowns to start the second half. The Steelers’ offense finally woke up after that, but it was too little too late

Steelers defeat Ravens in overtime, on the verge of making playoffs

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens in overtime Sunday, improving their chances at making the playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens in overtime Sunday, greatly improving their chances at making the playoffs.

The Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Indianapolis Colts at home, which helped the Steelers’ quest for the postseason.

The Steelers head to the playoffs on Sunday, the 16th at 8:15 PM.

Can the Steelers still make the playoffs?

The Steelers kept their postseason hopes alive by beating the Browns. Pittsburgh still has a chance at a wild-card berth in the AFC playoffs.

Here’s what needs to happen for Pittsburgh to earn a wild-card berth in the AFC playoffs.

  • The Steelers (8-7-1) must defeat the Ravens (8-8) in Baltimore on Sunday.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-14) must defeat the Indianapolis Colts (9-7) at home on Sunday.
  • The Las Vegas Raiders (9-7) vs. the Los Angeles Chargers (9-7) cannot end in a tie.

How likely is that scenario?

Pittsburgh’s chance of going to the playoffs is 8%, according to ESPN. Those are slim odds, but they’re actually improved from 4% before the Cleveland game.

While the Jaguars only have two wins this season, the Colts haven’t beaten them in Jacksonville since 2014.

The Ravens are still alive in the playoff race as well. Baltimore needs a win over Pittsburgh, combined with losses by the Chargers and the Colts, along with a Miami loss or tie.

The Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Raiders and Chargers are all chasing the AFC’s final two playoff berths.

Antonio Brown’s NFL career took another bizarre turn on Sunday when the wide receiver walked away from his team’s game at MetLife Stadium.

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trailing the New York Jets 24-10 in the third quarter, Brown removed his uniform and pads before walking off the field shirtless. Brown tossed his gloves and shirt into the stands. He waved to fans as he jogged through the end zone and into the tunnel.

Beforehand, teammate Mike Evans appeared to try to calm down Brown, who had three catches for 26 yards in the game.

After Brown bailed on the Bucs, quarterback Tom Brady helped lead a comeback. Brady connected with Cyril Grayson for a 33-yard touchdown play with 15 seconds left to secure a 27-24 victory.

Madden Monday: Steelers’ win over Titans was ‘discouraging’; Penguins’ Teddy Blueger shines

The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to grind out a 19-13 victory against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Heinz Field. But it did little to impress Mark Madden from a big-picture point of view.

In this week’s “Madden Monday” podcast, Mark said don’t let the victory fool you into thinking that the Steelers’ recent ills have been solved just because a checkmark went into the win column.

“Even though they won. Even though they are 7-6-1. Even though now only half a game separates the entire AFC North from top to bottom. Forget all that. Because I see a football team that isn’t very good,” Madden said.

The reason why Madden is advancing that opinion is how the Steelers managed to win that game. Or, better said, how the Titans tried to lose it by more … but the Steelers just wouldn’t let them.

“If ever a win could be discouraging, it was that game,” Madden said. “Because the Steelers won only because Tennessee kept putting the ball on the ground — three fumbles, one interception. And the Steelers only manufactured four field goals from those four turnovers.”

Madden said if the Steelers play that way again next week in Kansas City, the defending AFC Champion Chiefs will expose them badly.

(CNN)The Minnesota Vikings endured a late Pittsburgh Steelers rally to keep their playoff hopes alive with a 36-28 victory on Thursday Night Football.

Having surged into a commanding 29-0 lead by late in the third quarter, the Vikings found themselves inches away from an embarrassing final-play collapse — Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s incomplete pass to Pat Freiermuth in the end zone quashing a potential comeback for the ages.
Vikings safety Harrison Smith flew into tight end Freiermuth to force the incompletion, sparing Minnesota blushes and lifting his team to 6-7 on the year.
Roethlisberger was keen not to put any blame on the 23-year-old rookie, who was said to be devastated by his dropped catch.
“He’s taking it pretty hard,” Roethlisberger told reporters.
“I pulled him next to my locker and talked to him a little bit at the end. I got a lot of faith and belief and trust in that guy — he’s got a lot of heart.
“He’ll eat this for a while and he shouldn’t because it’s not on him.”

Tomlin Heaps Praise On Young And New Steelers For Stepping Up In Sunday’s 20 – 19 Win – Steelers Depot

John Leglue. Montravius Adams. Ahkello Witherspoon. All three important pieces in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season-saving victory. Just as everyone expected. But all three of those guys stepped up in the win. Leglue took over at left guard early in the game after BJ Finney left with a back injury.

Analysis | NFL’s taunting controversy reemerges as Steelers edge Bears, 29-27

In a hail of penalty flags and debatable calls by the officials — including a taunting penalty on Chicago’s Cassius Marsh — the Steelers gave up the lead late in the fourth quarter but snatched it back and held off the Bears for their fourth straight win.

The controversy over the NFL’s taunting enforcement resurfaced in a major way Monday night in Pittsburgh.

Chicago Bears linebacker Cassius Marsh was penalized for taunting in a key moment during a 29-27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. Marsh called the penalty assessed on him erroneous and alleged that referee Tony Corrente inappropriately bumped into him as Marsh made his way to the Bears’ sideline after the play.

“I think that that one was just bad timing,” Marsh said. “I think it’s pretty clear to everybody who saw it that I wasn’t taunting. I’ve been doing the celebration my whole career. It’s just sad to see stuff like that happen in a close game like that. It’s just rough. I don’t want to say too much because you all know how it is.
“But the one thing that I will say is, you know, on my way to the sideline, I got hip-checked by the ref and it’s pretty clear. If I were to do that to a ref or even touch the ref, you know, we’d get kicked out of the game, possibly suspended and fined. So I just think that that was incredibly inappropriate. And that’s all I’ll say about that.”

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers actually caught several breaks from the officiating, put together a game-winning drive after falling behind late and continued to reassemble their once-broken season. The Steelers secured their fourth straight victory following a 1-3 start to the season. Bears kicker Cairo Santos missed a 65-yard field goal attempt as time expired when the ball fell short.

Kicker Chris Boswell’s 40-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining won it for the Steelers. The Bears had taken a 27-26 lead with 1:46 left on a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Fields to wide receiver Darnell Mooney.
But much of the talk afterward was about Marsh’s taunting penalty.

“I had no idea till I got to the sideline,” Marsh said in a postgame news conference. “One of our coaches was upset. And he had the right to be. You know, that was a big penalty in a big point in the game and, you know, I cost my team. Whether I agree with the call or not, it cost us in a very crucial time. So I definitely feel a lot of remorse for costing my team a possible victory. But I didn’t know until I got to the sideline.”

Corrente told a pool reporter that he saw Marsh “run toward the bench area of the Pittsburgh Steelers and posture in such a way that I felt he was taunting them.” Corrente said that his physical contact with Marsh “had nothing to do” with the penalty that was called.

The call came following Marsh’s third-down sack of Roethlisberger that would have caused a Steelers punt. Instead, the Steelers retained possession and upped their lead to six points with a 52-yard field goal by Boswell with 2:52 to play.

“I was on the sideline,” Bears linebacker Roquan Smith said. “But that’s not the play that lost us the game, by any means. I thought it was a BS call. The man’s been doing that celebration his entire career, for that to be called. But, hey, it is what it is. So there’s nothing else to be said about that.”

Staff Picks: Can the Steelers keep Monday night mojo going?

Each week, our football staff at DK Pittsburgh Sports predicts the Steelers’ game. Here are this week’s picks for the game against the Bears, Monday 8:15 p.m., at Heinz Field.

Dale Lolley (4-3): A one-dimensional offense against the Steelers on a Monday night at home? The Steelers are 27-5 in home Monday night games since 1970. The Steelers will get after Justin Fields and force multiple mistakes. And the Bears are missing too many pieces on defense, most notably, Khalil Mack, to make a difference. Steelers, 24-10

Chris Carter (4-3): The Bears give up sacks 12.6 percent of the times a quarterback drop back to pass, and that will play a huge factor. The Steelers will be able to focus on stopping the run and keeping Fields jittery in the pocket all night, and that will allow the offense plenty of time to figure things out. Steelers, 27-6

Ramon Foster (4-3): Experience beats the Bears this Monday night. The offensive line has to control the line of scrimmage and get Najee Harris going. Big Night for Ben Roethlisberger spreading the ball around. Steelers, 27-13

Tom Reed (3-4): The Steelers are in the soft portion of their schedule and can’t afford any slip ups. You would expect it to be lesson learned after needing OT to subdue the Russell Wilson-less Seahawks. No late drama this time. Steelers, 27-14

Eddie Provident (5-2): The Bears are letting up 124 rushing yards per game (24th in the NFL) and are down Mack. I expect a big game from Harris on the national stage which will open things up for the passing game. I don’t see this being close at all. Steelers, 23-7

Dejan Kovacevic (2-5): List for me, please, all the running quarterbacks who’ve been able to do what they want against the Steelers over, oh, the past decade or so. After that, list for me the number of Monday night duds this franchise has had at home. Steelers, 31-11

Steelers Lose to Raiders 26 -17 and LB T.J. Watt questionable to return with groin injury

Injury issues continue for the Steelers.The injuries are really starting to pile up for the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Going into the game the team was already without defensive linemen Carlos Davis and Stephon Tuitt along with linebacker Devin Bush and cornerback Joe Haden. In game the Steelers lost nose tackle Tyson Alualu and now star outside linebacker T.J. Watt is questionable to return with a groin injury.

Ready or not, Steelers will unveil new-look offense in season opener against Bills

Ben Roethlisberger answered each time in the affirmative when asked this week whether he was nervous or excited about what awaits the Pittsburgh Steelers offense Sunday in Buffalo. Matt Canada, on the other hand, called it just another day at the office.

No matter the perspective of a veteran quarterback heading into his 18th season or an offensive coordinator calling plays for the first time at the NFL level, the Steelers won’t have to wait much longer to see whether the fruits of their offseason work will be fulfilled in a new-look offense that will be unveiled in the season opener.

“Anxious, excited, nervous,” Roethlisberger said. “We hold ourselves to high expectations and high standards. So, I think, as players, you have to (be that way). I’m sure the coaches are a little nervous and anxious, too.”

If Canada has any trepidation about the offense he will put on display before a full house at Highmark Stadium, he didn’t show it outwardly this week.

“Excited to watch our guys play,” was all Canada would allow regarding his emotions. “Like any first game of the season, it’s exciting to let your guys go play, kind of see where you’re really at going against somebody full speed.”

Final Score: Panthers route the Steelers 34-9 in preseason finale – Behind the Steel Curtain

The Pittsburgh Steelers lose in the 2021 preseason for the first time, this a 34-9 defeat to the Carolina Panthers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers locked horns in the final preseason game of the NFL Preseason in Charlotte, NC, and the Steelers were trying to remain perfect in this 2021 preseason.

With a lot of starters not seeing action, it was Dwayne Haskins and the Pittsburgh offense taking the field for the opening kickoff. However, a three-and-out sent Jordan Berry on the field for the first punt of the game.

Sam Darnold took over for the Carolina Panthers, and put together an impressive, and time consuming drive. Starting at their own 20-yard line, the Panthers worked their way deep into Pittsburgh territory, but failed on 4th down and turned the ball over on downs with nothing to show for their 13 play, 7:01 drive.

The Steelers’ offense remained inept with Haskins at the helm, and resulted in another three-and-out on their second possession. Pressley Harvin delivered a 48-yard punt, putting the Carolina back in their own territory for their second drive of the first quarter.

Analysis: Which Steelers are rising and falling after first preseason game? | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers beat the Cowboys 16-3 on Thursday night in the Hall of Fame Game. 


The Steelers have an off day Friday and then return to Heinz Field for open practices Saturday through Tuesday. Some veterans who are being brought along slowly due to injuries are expected to ramp up their practice participation before next Thursday’s game in Philadelphia. Right tackle Zach Banner, left guard Kevin Dotson and inside linebacker Devin Bush are some of the players who could be getting a bigger workload.

The Pittsburgh Steelers held practice at Heinz Field for 2021 Training Camp on Saturday as the concluding even to Steelers Fest. Since the Steelers were back on the field, we were also given the typical media session from head coach Mike Tomlin. Therefore, it’s time to look at the players mentioned by Coach Tomlin during his media time. Remember these are current players where a specific question was asked during the Q&A period.

Pat Freiermuth & Alex Highsmith

“56 (Alex Highsmith) is a guy that has big-time urgency in his play; his motor runs hot. We’re just trying to develop that, and Pat… You partner those guys together to create that. That’s the iron-on-iron principle. There’s a rhyme and reason to a lot of the matchups and usually it’s about one man’s strength versus another element of the next man’s game that needs improvement. In the case of those two, we just like the finish of Alex, and so we’re going to pit Pat in those circumstances”

During Saturday’s practice, it was reported Ben Roethlisberger made quick work of the two-minute drill as the Steelers weren’t forced to go the entire length of the field. Coach Tomlin was asked if he will make it more difficult on Roethlisberger the next time.

“No, we work on the short field sometimes because usually that puts you in a position where you gotta choose from a large number of plays down in here in the high red.

Najee Harris

As the Steelers are going through training camp, it appears there have been highs and lows when it comes to the running game as they have broken off some nice runs while having several negative ones as well. Coach Tomlin was asked if he was upset about the negative plays or if he was more impressed with what Najee Harris did.

“I don’t know that I was upset at all to be honest with you. It’s just ebbs, and flow associated with play this time of year.”

Zach Gentry

One player reportedly having quite a nice training camp coming off of injury is third-year tight end Zach Gentry. Coach Tomlin was asked if Gentry has an appetite for one-on-one drills. In his response, Coach Tomlin brought up Pat Freiermuth once again.

“He did. But, boy, we’re gonna put him in more circumstances. The tight end position is a unique one because of the challenges that they face week in and week out in the NFL. Some weeks they’re blocking outside linebackers, some weeks they’re blocking big men four-three ends. And so that’s why some tight ends look like Pat (Freiermuth) and some tight ends look like Zach. Zach is a guy that has a skillset and a body to match up with four-three people, and so he better distinguish himself in those circumstances.”

Melvin Ingram III

By the time to 2021 regular season rolls around, I hope that I don’t continue to call Melvin Ingram the improper “M” first name. Coach Tomlin was asked a similar question to what he’s been asked before in what stands out about Ingram. Of course, the answer was not all that different from when Coach Tomlin has discussed Ingram in the past.

“He knows how to play. He’s a veteran. You feel his veteran presence. You see the thoughtfulness in his skills relative to his position. He looks like a guy who’s done this for a while at this level.”

JuJu Smith-Schuster returning to Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers confirmed that wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster will be staying with the team next season.

The Steelers are giving Smith-Schuster a one-year deal.

Smith-Schuster tweeted Friday afternoon, “This is my home, they’re gonna need a wrecking ball to take me outta here! PITTSBURGH I LOVE YOU, LET’S GO!!!!!”ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday afternoon that the Baltimore Ravens “made a hard push to sign him” but he took less money to return to the Steelers.

Steelers legends Bill Nunn and Alan Faneca elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its 2021 class of inductees on Saturday night, and the Steelers wing at the museum in Canton, Ohio just got a little bigger.

Legendary scout Bill Nunn and stalwart offensive lineman Alan Faneca are the newest members and will be enshrined later this summer when the Steelers play the Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game. They will be honored along with Troy Polamalu, Donnie Shell and Bill Cowher, members of the 2020 Hall class, whose ceremonies were canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nunn was the lone finalist in the contributor’s category this year, and his induction was a long time coming. The Steelers worked behind the scenes for years to get Nunn into the Hall of Fame.

It’s fitting Nunn will be enshrined with Shell, who was many of the great players from the Steelers dynasty of the 1970s that he discovered. It was Nunn who was in charge of finding talent for the Steelers at the historically black universities across the South, and he did it better than anyone else.

Super Bowl, Chiefs vs. Buccaneers: Market data points to one winner

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs face off in Super Bowl LV this weekend, one strategist will be watching for an interesting development off the field.

According to Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at LPL Financial, history points to better outcomes for the market should one team win over the other. He explained the coincidental correlation to CNBC’s “Trading Nation.”

This year, the National Football Conference team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by quarterback Tom Brady; the American Football Conference team is represented by Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes as quarterback.

Since 1967, the S&P 500 has risen an average 10.2% for the full year when the NFC wins and 7.1% when the AFC wins.

But, while Tom Brady has switched to an NFC team this year from AFC team New England Patriots, past performance suggests he’s not a winner for the market.

“When Tom Brady’s been in the game, 9 times  —this is his record 10th Super Bowl — the S&P’s actually flat for the year,” said Detrick. “He might be the GOAT [greatest of all time], but he’s not the GOAT for the stock market.”

The S&P 500 is up 3% for the year so far and hit record highs on Friday.

Mark Madden on Mason Rudolph: ‘I bet he starts at quarterback for a year or two’ | TribLIVE.com

Our first “Madden Monday” podcast of 2021 looks at the Steelers of 2022. Could they really open up that season with Mason Rudolph at quarterback?

In the wake of Sunday’s performance against the Cleveland Browns, Mark Madden seems to think so.

Madden isn’t saying that’s what he’d do. But he’s getting the sense that’s what the Steelers will do.

“I thought he did OK,” Madden said of Rudolph’s 315-yard performance Sunday. “I won’t go any better than OK. But when I consider the way the Steelers do things, I bet he starts at quarterback for a year or two.”

Madden is making that prediction based on tendencies of what he seems to think will be typical Steelers behavior.

“They aren’t going to go after a quarterback which is what I would do. Like a Sam Darnold (New York Jets) or somebody (else) that didn’t cut it after being a high draft pick. So since they won’t do that, they are going to draft a guy. They haven’t drafted him yet. So whoever they do draft, whether it’s next year or the year after — whenever Ben Roethlisberger retires — I bet Rudolph has to start for a year or two.”

Not that Madden is optimistic about that scenario.

“I don’t think (Rudolph) will do very well when he does start. But I think that is how it will work out.”

Steelers announce resting starters not traveling to Cleveland

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that the starters who are sitting out this week to rest ahead of the playoffs did not travel with the team. This means quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, defensive lineman Cam Heyward, center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker T.J. Watt will stay back in Pittsburgh while the rest of the team heads to Cleveland to try to knock the Browns out of playoff contention.

In addition, Pittsburgh also announced that kicker Chris Boswell and safety Terrell Edmunds are staying in Pittsburgh while they deal with injuries. Matthew Wright will handle the kicking duties this week and in Edmunds’ place, look for some combination of Jordan Dangerfield and Marcus Allen.

There was no mention of cornerback Joe Haden not traveling with the team but Haden, along with tight end Eric Ebron and linebacker Cassius Marsh were all placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.
