Moe, Larry, Shemp, and Curly are coming to Pittsburgh. On film at least.
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced Friday that a Three Stooges Festival will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Harris Theater.
The Three Stooges consisted of the Howard brothers, Moe, Shemp and Curly, and Larry Fine. When Shemp left to pursue a solo career, younger brother Jerome “Curly” Howard replaced him.
They made 190 short films for Columbia Pictures. The Harris is planning to show six of what are considered to be their best: “Pop Goes the Easel,” “Grips Grunts and Groan,” “Three Little Pigskins,” “Brideless Groom,” “Fright Night,” and “Sing a Song of Sixpants.”
Lamont Dozier, the middle name of the celebrated Holland-Dozier-Holland team that wrote and produced “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “Heat Wave” and dozens of other hits and helped make Motown an essential record company of the 1960s and beyond, has died at age 81.
The sugar-sweet performer with a string of No. 1 hits was also an advocate for cancer research.
(CNN)Olivia Newton-John, the Australian singer whose breathy voice and wholesome beauty made her one of the biggest pop stars of the ’70s and charmed generations of viewers in the blockbuster movie “Grease,” died on Monday, according to a statement from her husband. She was 73.
“Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time,” her husband, John Easterling, wrote in a statement on the singer’s verified Instagram account. “Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer.”
The singer revealed in September 2018 that she was treating cancer at the base of her spine. It was her third cancer diagnosis, following bouts with breast cancer in the early ’90s and in 2017.
The Oklahoma native appeared in television’s “Golden Age,” and last worked with Quentin Tarantino.
The Oklahoma-born actor got his start in television, starring as Billy the Kid on NBC’s The Tall Man in 1960 after appearances on Have Gun—Will Travel, Wagon Train, and other classics of the era. In the mid-1980s he appeared in The Return of the Living Dead and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge. His most recent acting role was in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood. He was 93 years old.
Gulagar, whose 165 credits on the IMDb made him ubiquitous enough to warrant his own alert on Mystery Science Theater 3000, was an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and a cousin (once removed) of vaudevillian-humorist Will Rogers. Born William Martin Gulager, the nickname Clu, which he shared with an uncle, was in reference to the Cherokee word for the type of birds that nested near his home.
His early days in television included appearances on Playhouse 90, The Untouchables, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and a Gene Roddenberry-penned episode of Have Gun—Will Travel. This led to his first starring role, as Billy the Kid on NBC’s The Tall Man, for 75 episodes. He starred opposite Barry Sullivan, playing Sheriff Pat Garrett.
Roger E. Mosley, best known as the helicopter pilot Theodore “T.C.” Calvin in the CBS television series Magnum P.I., died early Sunday morning. No cause of death was given.
Mosley was on the original Magnum P.I. for its eight-year run, appearing in 158 episodes, then came back to the rebooted CBS series for a cameo as a different character.

Sorry, DC universe fans: the movie, which starred ‘In The Heights’ actress Leslie Grace in the title role, will not be released theatrically or on HBO Max.
In a move that shocked Hollywood observers for the amount of money wasted, Warner Bros. Discovery announced Tuesday that it is shelving all plans to release the nearly finished film Batgirl, starring actress Leslie Grace.
The film had originally been planned with a $75 million budget that had rocketed up to $90 million, due to COVID-related delays. It was directed by the duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, whose credits include the 2020 Will Smith and Martin Lawrence vehicle Bad Boys for Life as well as the recent Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
In a statement reported by multiple media sources, a Warner Bros. spokesperson wrote: “The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance.”
Warner Bros. has not replied to requests from NPR for comment.
Pat Carroll, a comedic television mainstay for decades, Emmy-winner for “Caesar’s Hour” and the voice of Ursula in “The Little Mermaid,” has died. She was 95.
Her daughter Kerry Karsian, a casting agent, said Carroll died at her home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Saturday. Her other daughter Tara Karsian wrote on Instagram that they want everyone to “honor her by having a raucous laugh at absolutely anything today (and everyday forward) because besides her brilliant talent and love, she leaves my sister Kerry and I with the greatest gift of all, imbuing us with humor and the ability to laugh…even in the saddest of times.”
Carroll was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1927. Her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was 5 years old. Her first film role came in 1948 in “Hometown Girl” but she found her stride in television. She won an Emmy for her work on the sketch comedy series “Caesar’s Hour” in 1956, was a regular on “Make Room for Daddy” with Danny Thomas, a guest star on “The DuPont Show with June Allyson” and a variety show regular stopping by “The Danny Kaye Show,” “The Red Skelton Show” and “The Carol Burnett Show.”
Nichelle Nichols, who broke barriers for Black women in Hollywood when she played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original “Star Trek” television series, has died at the age of 89.
Her son Kyle Johnson said Nichols died Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico.
“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration,” Johnson wrote on her official Facebook page Sunday. “Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”
Her role in the 1966-69 series as Lt. Uhura earned Nichols a lifelong position of honor with the series’ rabid fans, known as Trekkers and Trekkies. It also earned her accolades for breaking stereotypes that had limited Black women to acting roles as servants and included an interracial onscreen kiss with co-star William Shatner that was unheard of at the time.
“I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89,” George Takei wrote on Twitter. “For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend.”
Takei played Sulu in the original “Star Trek” series alongside Nichols. But her impact was felt beyond her immediate co-stars, and many others in the “Star Trek” world also tweeted their condolences.
The Mega Millions jackpot has crossed the $1 billion threshold. The grand prize in Friday night’s drawing will be an estimated $1.02 billion, lottery officials said, though that’s certain to grow as more and more tickets are bought as that drawing approaches.
The cash option for that pot of gold would be $602.5 million.
No winning tickets were sold for Tuesday night’s drawing, which had a jackpot of $830 million. It would have been the nation’s fourth-largest lottery prize of all time and third-largest Mega Millions prize.
$1.02 billion, to be exact. That’s almost sure to grow before Friday night’s drawing. There have now been 29 straight drawings without a winner.
The winning numbers for a big Mega Millions drawing were drawn on the night of July 26.
The numbers are 7, 29, 60, 63, 66, with a Mega Ball of 15. The Megaplier is 3.
The jackpot for July 26’s Mega Millions drawing is estimated to be $830 million.
The jackpot is the nation’s fourth-largest lottery prize, and the biggest in more than a year. The $830 million prize is for winners who choose the annuity option, paid annually over 30 years. Most winners opt for the cash option, which for Tuesday night’s drawing is an estimated $487.9 million.
TMZ reported that Dow’s wife, Lauren, believed her husband was dead and told his manager, which led to the statement being posted to his official Facebook page. The post has since been deleted.
Dow, though, is under hospice care, and his son, Christopher, told Fox News that his father does not have much time left.
“This is a difficult time,” Christopher Dow said. “Yes he is still alive but in his last hours. Under hospice care.”
Santana’s Wednesday show at the Pavilion at Star Lake has been postponed after the group’s leader Carlos Santana collapsed onstage Tuesday in Michigan. The 74-year-old musician was hospitalized with heat exhaustion and dehydration. A representative told USA Today that Santana is being held for observation and is doing well.
Santana’s manager Micheal Vrionis updated fans on the artist’s official Facebook page Tuesday, explaining Santana had been transported from the Pine Knob Music Theatre, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit, to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkson in Clarkston, Mich.
The show in Pittsburgh — co-billed with Earth, Wind & Fire as the Miraculous Supernatural Tour — will be rescheduled to a later date and more details will be available through Live Nation, Vrionis said.
It’s the second time the show has been postponed. The two acts were set to play Star Lake on Aug. 5, 2020, but that tour was canceled because of covid.

Sunday’s three-hour finale brought back Season 20’s most popular finalists, pairing them with some of the biggest names in music for a series of special performances, before revealing which of the three remaining contestants — HunterGirl, Leah Marlene or Noah Thompson — would take home the ultimate title.
Thompson was the frontrunner heading into this finale, with 50 percent of TVLine readers expecting him to win. HunterGirl followed closely in our poll with 30 percent of readers’ votes, while Marlene trailed behind with 19.
But enough math, let’s talk about the music. After a legitimately vertigo-inducing performance from Flo Rida and friends, the finale kicked off with a round entirely devoted to Bruce Springsteen, followed by performances of the finalists’ official singles. Guitar legend Eric Clapton will return to Pittsburgh for the first time in nine years to play PPG Paints Arena on Sept. 16.

Clapton, 77, made his name as a member of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and Cream before launching a solo career and also forming Derek and the Dominos in 1970.
Clapton arrives in Pittsburgh on the same night fellow British rock legend Elton John is playing PNC Park. It is John’s second trip here on the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which previously played PPG Paints Arena in November 2019.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers did a stadium tour together in 1992.
Notices are already posted on part of Boulevard of the Allies that no parking will be allowed starting at 6 a.m Friday. Those restrictions will continue until after the race.
“If you are heading out Saturday night, Downtown, to the South Side, to Oakland, and you see a sign that says “No Parking 11 p.m.”, and think ‘I’m only going to be here for a little bit longer, enjoy my night,” that’s not true. You might not have your car there when you get back,” Brian Schmidt, operations director, Pittsburgh Marathon, told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4.
The first full road closings started at noon Friday on a few blocks of the Boulevard of the Allies downtown, between Wood Street and Stanwix Street.
“First off, we don’t want to tow anyone’s car that we don’t have to. But for safety for all, we need to make sure the route is clear for the runners for, again, like I said, the safety. So no parking begins Friday with our closure (on part of Boulevard of the Allies),” Schmidt said.
On Saturday was the next phase of road closings. Those are happening on the North Shore as well as Downtown, to accommodate the 5K and kids marathon races.
The new 5K course will allow North Shore parking lots to remain open and accessible.
Sunday’s the big day.
Road closings will affect lots of neighborhood streets, as the 26.2 mile marathon makes its way across the North Side, the West End, the South Side, the East End, and back Downtown.
Closures along the course route begin as early as 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
“Overall, the route is the same that we used back in 2019 and 2018. The only difference we have this year is a slight detour off our original route out in the Homewood section of the city, due to the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse,” Schmidt said.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Naomi Judd, whose family harmonies with daughter Wynonna turned them into the Grammy-winning country stars The Judds, has died. She was 76. Her daughters, Wynonna and Ashley, announced her death on Saturday in a statement provided to The Associated Press.
The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum will host it’s annual Bunny Trolley on April 8-10 and April 15-16.
The season favorite let’s guests ride an antique trolley to visit the Easter Bunny. Additional activities include a scavenger hunt, a springtime craft, photos with the Easter Bunny and the opportunity to hold a live rabbit courtesy of the Four-Leaf 4-H Club.
The Spring Fling with the East Bunny event is sold out for Easter weekend, but the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays in April and May. Masks are required to be worn by visitors over 2 years old, social distancing will be practiced and enhanced cleaning procedures will be in place.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A bar in Uptown was shut down after a raid.
The state calls it a nuisance bar with complaints about drug activity and late-night noise and has been trying to shut it down for years. On Wednesday, agents once again raided Ace’s & Deuce’s lounge on Fifth Avenue and shut it down — at least for now.
Agents from the Nuisance Bar Taskforce descended on the bar shortly after 1 p.m. and by midday, the Allegheny County Health Department had shut it down for numerous violations. But the investigation goes deeper.
Detectives from vice and narcotics, state police and agents from the Liquor Control Board descended on the bar en masse much to the delight of the bar’s neighbor, the Bethlehem Haven Woman’s Shelter.
The shelter for women in recovery has been one of the major sources of complaints against the bar for drug activity and late-night noise. Executive Director Annette Fetchko calls it a threat to the health and safety of her clients.
For the first time since 2019, Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade will go on as planned in March, and police are expecting its return to be very well-attended.
“After two very challenging years, it’s understandable that people will be in the mood to celebrate one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved traditions: St. Patrick’s Day,” said Public Safety Director Lee Schmidt.
The parade was canceled in 2020 as the covid-19 pandemic took hold. In 2021, it was pushed to September as covid cases again surged throughout the winter and into the early spring.
Schmidt urged revelers to keep in mind that “while the worst of the pandemic appears to have waned at this moment, it has not disappeared entirely.”
In addition to large crowds along the parade route, authorities also expect the usual party spots – the South Side, Downtown and the North Shore – to see crowds reminiscent of pre-pandemic celebrations.
Temporary light towers will be in the busiest areas, and firefighters and liquor control officers will be doing occupancy checks. Schmidt said bars and restaurants exceeding their posted occupancy limits will be cleared and closed.
As with most city celebrations, Pittsburgh police will be out in full force, including the mounted unit, motorcycle and bicycle units, and K-9 units. County and state police also will be patrolling.

It won’t play at all in Russia after Warner Bros. opted to pull its release following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
A Pittsburgh homemaker is a Jeopardy! winning machine, cruising to her fourth consecutive victory as a contestant on Friday’s show.
Margaret Shelton, of the city’s East End, won for the fourth consecutive game on Friday. She earned another $21,500 to bring her total winnings to $79,700.
Shelton had to stage a come-from-behind rally on Wednesday and Thursday to capture victory in Final Jeopardy!.
But there was no such drama Friday. Going into the final round, Shelton had amassed $24,000, which was $18,400 more than her nearest competitor, a woman from Philadelphia.
Unlike the two previous shows, Shelton did not give the correct question to the Final Jeopardy! answer, which was about a character in a book by Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky. Neither did her competitors.
Shelter took a commanding lead in the Jeopardy! portion of the show when she bet all of her $7,600 winnings as of that point on a Daily Double category about King Arthur’s legend. She answered correctly, giving her $15,200.
She opened the contest by cleaning up in the “History” category and was never seriously challenged.
“Not bad for a couple of hours work,” Shelton was heard saying after the contest and captured on a video available on jeopardy.com/overheard. Her winning streak made her “a winner, for like, the first time in my whole life.” She mixed in “Holy Moly!” twice to show her amazement.
