911 Remembered

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans remembered 9/11 on Sunday with tear-choked tributes and pleas to “never forget,” 21 years after the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil.

Nikita Shah headed to the ceremony at ground in a T-shirt that bore the de facto epigraph of the annual commemoration — “never forget” — and the name of her slain father, Jayesh Shah. The family moved to Houston afterward but has often returned to New York for the anniversary of the attack that killed him and nearly 3,000 other people.

“For us, it was being around people who kind of experienced the same type of grief and the same feelings after 9/11,” said Shah, who was 10 when her father was killed at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Victims’ relatives and dignitaries also convened at the two other attack sites, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.

Other communities around the country are marking the day with candlelight vigils, interfaith services and other commemorations. Some Americans are joining in volunteer projects on a day that is federally recognized as both Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Building collapses in Monessen during storm – CBS Pittsburgh

MONESSEN, Pa. (KDKA) – A man who narrowly escaped a building collapse in Monessen said he heard a rumble of thunder then bricks started falling.

The pile of rubble in the alley and mounds of debris seen in what used to be windows give you an idea of the level of structural failure that occurred when parts of the old Mon Valley Independent lost their battle against gravity and time.

The man didn’t want to show his face but said he had an up close and personal look at the collapse as he walked through the alley behind the building.

“I was just walking through the ally and it just started coming down,” he said.

Monessen police and fire were at the scene almost immediately. The collapse closed alleys in the area. Monessen Police Chief David Yuhasz said given the state of many buildings in Monessen, this isn’t surprising and it’s lucky to have happened when it did.

Small plane crashes into Florida bridge, killing one person and injuring 5, officials say – CNN

(CNN)A small plane crashed Saturday into the Haulover Inlet Bridge in Florida’s Miami-Dade County, killing one person and injuring five others, authorities said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement a single-engine Cessna aircraft flying from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport lost power and struck a vehicle on the bridge while landing.
The plane carrying a pilot and two passengers was traveling northbound and hit a SUV traveling southbound before catching fire, the Miami Dade Police Department said in a news release.
Once firefighters put out the flames, they discovered a deceased person inside the plane, the release said.
A woman and two toddlers were inside the SUV and transported to a local hospital for medical evaluations.
Video taken from the balcony of a nearby hotel by Miami resident Alex Huberman showed the small, wrecked plane on fire, with dark smoke rising from it.
Several feet away from the plane was a maroon-colored SUV, which appeared to have sustained extensive damage, the video shows, suggesting it may be the vehicle the plane struck when attempting to land.
Huberman said he saw at least two people get out of the plane, adding several people were put on stretchers by emergency personnel.

Desperate search for survivors in Cuba hotel blast; 27 dead

HAVANA (AP) — Relatives of the missing in Cuba’s capital desperately searched Saturday for victims of an explosion at one of Havana’s most luxurious hotels that killed at least 27 people. They checked the morgue, hospitals and if unsuccessful, they returned to the partially collapsed Hotel Saratoga, where rescuers used dogs to hunt for survivors.

A natural gas leak was the apparent cause of Friday’s blast at the 96-room hotel. The 19th-century structure in the Old Havana neighborhood did not have any guests at the time because it was undergoing renovations ahead of a planned Tuesday reopening after being closed for two years during the pandemic.

On Saturday evening, Dr. Julio Guerra Izquierdo, chief of hospital services at the Ministry of Health, raised the death toll to 27 with 81 people injured. The dead included four children and a pregnant woman. Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez said via Twitter that a Spanish tourist was among the dead and that another Spaniard was seriously injured.

Water pours out of Pittsburgh parking garage

PITTSBURGH —A large water pipe apparently burst in a Downtown Pittsburgh structure. It was around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday that the pipe burst, sending water into the Stanwix Street Garage on the 600 block of Stanwix Street.

The owner of the Avis Car Rental Store in the adjacent building said his store ended up being flooded.

“It sounded like a part of the building collapsed just a little bit,” said Alan Corrado. “I didn’t know if it was the apartment above me. But apparently, it was just the sound from the water pipe breaking that happened one or two floors below me on the 11th or 12th floor.”

A massive volcano erupts near Tonga, triggering a tsunami advisory for the West Coast

A massive underwater volcano that erupted just before sundown Friday sent waves several feet high smashing into the shores of the Pacific island nation of Tonga and triggered tsunami advisories from Australia to Canada, including the U.S. West Coast.

Plumes from the explosion reached more than 12 miles above sea level, according to the Tonga Geological Services. At its widest, the cloud caused by the ash and steam reached about 150 miles across, making it easily seen from satellites.

In Tonga, home to 105,000 people, the extent of the injuries and damage caused were still largely unknown. Communications were disrupted for hours, according to the Associated Press.

Waves flooded parts of the capital Nuku’alofa — just 40 miles from the site of the eruption — including parts of the grounds at the Royal Palace, according to Radio New Zealand.

On Twitter, a Tonga resident named Faka’iloatonga Taumoefolau posted a video on Saturday showing feet-high waves washing across a road into homes.

The activity from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano continued into Saturday morning with another, less powerful 10- to 15-minute-long eruption, according to the Tonga Geological Service.

Multiple space heaters had been running for days inside apartment where deadly Bronx fire erupted

The Bronx apartment where a fire erupted that killed 17 people had several space heaters running at the time of the fire — and all of them, including the one that sparked the fatal blaze, had been left on for days, FDNY sources said Tuesday.

Firefighters made the discovery as they sifted through the scorched rubble of the second-floor in the duplex apartment where the Sunday morning fire started.

The blaze sent thick plumes of choking smoke throughout the Twin Parks North West building on E. 181st St. near Tiebout Ave. in Fordham Heights.

Officers pull pilot from crashed plane seconds before train slams into it

Los Angeles police at the scene of a plane crash Sunday pulled a bloodied pilot to safety seconds before a train smashed into the wreckage.

The crash of the single-engine Cessna 172 on tracks near county-run Whiteman Airport, a one-runway facility in L.A.’s northeastern San Fernando Valley, put its injured pilot in a precarious position as a double-decker commuter train barreled in its direction shortly after 2 p.m., authorities said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said in a statement that the plane went down at a busy intersection after taking off from Whiteman. “The pilot was the only person on board,” he said.

Multiple officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Foothill Division, based about a half-block away, blocked the roadway with their SUVs as one officer stood at the tracks in the direction of the oncoming train in an apparent attempt to warn the conductor, according to body camera footage released by the LAPD.

But the train from taxpayer-supported Metrolink, which says it’s the nation’s third-largest commuter rail system in miles covered, roared ahead, its horn as crossing arms were down and warning bells rang.

Two officers yanked at the pilot out of the upright plane as a third and fourth tried to help and warn them that the train was near.

“Go, go, go!” one of the officers yelled as the pilot was dragged along the ground and away from the wreckage.

The span of time between the video’s focus on officers tugging on the pilot in his seat and the collision is roughly 6 seconds. The only thing missing for a Hollywood ending was an exaggerated, unrealistic explosion.

The pilot, who has not been identified, was taken to a trauma center for treatment of unknown injuries, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. No other injuries were reported.

The intersection was closed and the plane, seen on video of the crash site as a crumpled hulk, remained at the scene, the department said. The Metrolink line, which runs to the Antelope Valley in the high desert, was suspended.
